The African Bishops on one occasion, in council in Carthage, decided that heretics were not at all any part of the Church of Christ, but this opinion was modified by a later council. Heretics, writes Epiphanius, are divided into two kinds: those who receive the Chris tian religion, but err in parts, who when they come over to the Church are anointed with oil; and those who do not receive it at all and are unbelievers, such as Jews and Greeks, and these we baptize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unorthodox London: Or Phases of Religious Life in the Metropolis With one or two exceptions, the following papers have appeared in the columns of the Daily Telegraph, from which they are reprinted by permission of the proprietors, and with scarcely any alteration. The rule laid down was that they should be strictly descriptive articles, expressing no opinion pro or con. I have to acknowledge the ready courtesy and assistance which I have received from most of the representative men, whose names occur in the following pages. The only exceptions I have been obliged in self-defence t-o specify; Init they are so few: is simply to prove the rule. I feel that I have learnt much, and softened down a good many prejudices in the course of my two or three years religious peregrinations; and the hope of producing the same results in stay-at-home travellers induces me to collect the fugitive papers into a volume. Download or read book The London Life of Yesterday Classic Reprint written by Arthur Compton-Rickett and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Life of Yesterday In the following pages I have endeavoured to produce a series of clearly defined pictures of certain notable epochs into which London History may be divided. No attempt has been made to trace consecutively or to discuss in detail the political, the social, or the religious life of the various periods dealt with. For such a treatment of the subject the reader may be referred to the scholarly writings of Mr. Loftie and Dr. Sharpe, or to the pleasant pages of Sir Walter Besant's leisurely volumes. What I have tried to essay in this small volume is rather such a presentment of particular epochs as may serve for a background, which the reader can fill in at his leisure from works of a more ambitious and specialized character. A glance at the selection of books dealing with London life given in the Appendix will indicate how rich a literature we possess on the subject, and my obligations to the many who have specialized on certain epochs of its history are necessarily considerable. I have thought it better not to burden the volume with references, save in a few special instances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is hoped that the Notice of that most memorable con ict may not be wholly uninteresting or unprofitable. Jewel is principally known and honoured, at the present day, as the author of the immortal Apology for the Church of England. But full justice cannot be done to his memory, without some knowledge of the extent and value of his other gigantic labours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Labour of the People in London, Vol. 3: Religious Influences; The City of London and the West End There is here an evident and not unsuccessful effort to fill a place as a City church. Twice a week, on week-days, there is a service at with special addresses from noted preachers, each of whom usually gives a course. The object is to secure the attendance of men in their lunch hour, and so bring their daily lives under the influence of religion. NO doubt the attendance varies greatly with the reputation of the preacher, but as a rule it is disappointingly small. On one Wednesday we counted twenty persons - ten women, nine men and a boy - on another there were only five women and four men present. 80 large a proportion of women in a City audience is remarkable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Selections From the London Rambler and Other Catholic Periodicals And now, at length, in addressing ourselves to the question, how such studies can be considered in keeping with the original idea of the monastic state, we think it right to repeat an ex planation, which we made at an earlier stage of our discussion, to the effect that we are proposing nothing more than a survey of the venerable order of St.' Benedict from without; and we claim leave to do as much as this by the same right by which the humblest among us may freely and without oflence gaze on sun, moon, and stars, and form his own private Opinion, true or false, of their materials and their motions. And with this proviso, we remind the reader, if we have not sufficiently done so in our present pages, that the one object, immediate as well as ultimate, of Benedictine life, as history presents it to us, was to live in purity and to die in peace. The monk preposed to himself no great or systematic work, beyond that of saving his soul. What he did more than this, was the accident of the hour, Spontaneous acts of piety, the Sparks of mercy or beneficence, struck off 1n the heat, as it were, of his solemn religious toil, and done and over almost as soon as they began to be. If to-day he cut down a tree, or relieved the famishing, or visited the Sick, or taught. The ignorant, or. Book Christian Life and Practice

Download or read book Christian Life and Practice written by Owen C. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the Christian life and the practice of Christians and the church from an Anglican perspective. It begins with an analysis and explication of the structure and process of the Christian life before God in the church and the world involving a five-fold rule of life and the relation of this to spiritual direction. This is followed by an analysis and critique of the current spirituality movement, which arose in the 1970s and which has come to dominate and mislead the churches. A sequel to the latter explains the origin of the spirituality movement in the current Romantic movement that arose in the 1960s and has influenced all aspects of our culture with ambiguous results. Next there is a critique of contemporary parish ministry as practiced in residential parishes that at best ministers only to the private lives of its members, followed by a fictional story of such a residential parish that suggests a new departure in parish ministry. Then there is a critique of preaching in the Episcopal Church that is generally considered to be poor, and a proposal of a way to overcome this. The concluding three chapters treat a fundamental problem in our approach to private prayer and a way to resolve this, a proposal for a way to overcome the current impasse in the Anglican Communion concerning homosexuality, and a meditation on the responsibility of Christians in public life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social, Religious, and Political Life in the Seventeenth Century N some respects the accession of the House of Stuart to the throne of England may have been a disappointment on both sides. In those days Scotland was practically a dis tant nation, the manners and customs, the religion, and political system Of which were SO totally different from what was found south of the Tweed, that a man coming from Edin burgh was in all respects a foreigner in London. While this was the case with James I. When he entered his new capital in May, 1603, the people as little understood their new monarch as he himself did the English constitution.
