Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Controversies of Scotland Theological controversy in Scotland, since the Reformation, dates only from the eighteenth century. Prior to that time there had been controversy, fierce and incessant controversy, but it had been ecclesiastical rather than theological, and had to do with the question of Church Government, whether by prelates or presbyters, and not with the fundamentals of the faith or any of the doctrines of Christianity. Speculation on these high themes, even a free expression of opinion regarding them, was hardly known before the date mentioned, and could not be said to have been much encouraged in a land where unbelief was counted a crime, and blasphemy was visited with the punishment of death. Besides, the times were far too stormy and sanguinary to be favourable to the culture of theological studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom. Book Dictionary of Scottish Church History Theology

Download or read book Dictionary of Scottish Church History Theology written by Nigel M. de S. Cameron and published by Continuum. This book was released on 1993 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do animals have rights? If not, do we have duties towards them? If so, what duties? These and a myriad of other issues are discussed in the brilliantly argued Animal Rights and Wrongs. Issues discussed include- - Why are animal-rights groups so keen to protect the rights of rabbits and foxes but not of rats or mice or even humans? - How can we bridge the growing gap between rural producers and urban consumers? -Why is raising animals for fur more heinous than raising them for their meat? -Are we as human beings driving other species either to extinction or to a state of dependency? Animal Rights and Wrongs includes chapters on the livestock crisis, fishing, BSE and a layman's introduction to philosophical concepts. The book presents a radical response to the defenders of animal rights, and a challenge to those who think that because they are kind to their pets, they are therefore good news for animals.

Download or read book The Whole Christ written by Sinclair B. Ferguson and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the days of the early church, Christians have struggled to understand the relationship between two seemingly contradictory concepts in the Bible: law and gospel. If, as the apostle Paul says, the law cannot save, what can it do? Is it merely an ancient relic from Old Testament Israel to be discarded? Or is it still valuable for Christians today? Helping modern Christians think through this complex issue, seasoned pastor and theologian Sinclair Ferguson carefully leads readers to rediscover an eighteenth-century debate that sheds light on this present-day doctrinal conundrum: the Marrow Controversy. After sketching the history of the debate, Ferguson moves on to discuss the theology itself, acting as a wise guide for walking the path between legalism (overemphasis on the law) on the one side and antinomianism (wholesale rejection of the law) on the other.

Book Handbook of British Romanticism

Download or read book Handbook of British Romanticism written by Ralf Haekel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of British Romanticism is a state of the art investigation of Romantic literature and theory, a field that probably changed more quickly and more fundamentally than any other traditional era in literary studies. Since the early 1980s, Romantic studies has widened its scope significantly: The canon has been expanded, hitherto ignored genres have been investigated and new topics of research explored. After these profound changes, intensified by the general crisis of literary theory since the turn of the millennium, traditional concepts such as subjectivity, imagination and the creative genius have lost their status as paradigms defining Romanticism. The handbook will feature discussions of key concepts such as history, class, gender, science and the use of media as well as a thorough account of the most central literary genres around the turn of the 19th century. The focus of the book, however, will lie on a discussion of key literary texts in the light of the most recent theoretical developments. Thus, the Handbook of British Romanticism will provide students with an introduction to Romantic literature in general and literary scholars with a discussion of innovative and groundbreaking theoretical developments.
