Book excerpt: "Greek Religion . . . already has the standing of a classic, and the publication of an English version, which incorporates new material and is in effect a second edition, demands a toast . . . Anyone who pretends to survey Greek religion must be phenomenally learned. Burkert is. His book is a marvel of professional scholarship." London Review of Books "This book has established itself as a masterpiece, packed with learning but also rich in ideas and connections of every sort. Its appearance in a good English translation is an event not only for Hellenists but for all those interested in the study of religion . . . nobody else could have produced an account of the subject of comparable range and power. This will be the best history of Greek religion for this generation." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Ancient Greece Scope of the Book. - The present sketch does not aim at any complete survey, however brief, of the facts of Greek religion ;it is not a handbook. Still less does it aim at setting down in an elementary form the rudiments of the subject; it is not a primer. Rather it is, in the Greek sense, a historia - an inquiry into the nature of Greek religion; an attempt to see whence it came and whither it tended; how it resembles and how it differs from other religions. Especially its object is to ask and, if it may be, to answer the question: "What in Greek religion is characteristically Greek?" Two Factors in Religion: Ritual and Mythology. - Every religion contains two elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion

Download or read book Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion written by John Cuthbert Lawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion: A Study in Survivals The scheme of work originally proposed was the investigation of the customs and superstitions of modern Greece in their possible bearing upon the life and thought of ancient Greece; and to the Managers of the Craven Fund at that time, with whom was associated Mr R. A. Neil of Pembroke College to whose memory I have dedicated this book, I render hearty thanks for their willingness to encourage a venture new in direction, vague in scope, and possibly void of result. The course of research proposed was one which required as the first condition of any success considerable readiness in speaking and understanding the popular language, and to the attainment of this my first few months were necessarily devoted. When once the ear has become accustomed to the modern pronunciation, a knowledge of ancient Greek makes for rapid progress; and some three or four months spent chiefly in the cafe's of small provincial towns rendered me fairly proficient in ordinary conversation. Subsequent practice enabled me also to follow conversations not intended for my ear; and on more than one occasion I obtained from the talk of peasants thus overheard information which they might have been chary of imparting to a stranger.
