Book excerpt: There is an interesting knowledge trajectory that God remains incomprehensible, not imperceptible. This lends credence to the fact that religious study since the Enlightenment has dedicated itself almost entirely to the problem of reconciling the non-existence of God in the physical world with his necessary existence in the metaphysical world. When seriously examined, it would be discovered that these two aspects are logically contradictory, and this is a problem with no solution. But interpreting God not as a physical being but as a phenomenological thing changes the nature of the problem enough that a solution emerges almost automatically. In this phenomenological model, the crux of the matter is that God does not exist, but God is real. Therefore, it is imperative to return to experience and verifiability, hence, purging it of unexamined and often hidden assumptions. Phenomenological Approaches to Religion and Spirituality brings together the different disciplines and research approaches to provide a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenology of God and spirituality, as well as offering an effective epistemological apparatus capable of dealing with this concept. The book employs multidisciplinary approaches from religious studies, theology, philosophy, anthropology, and other segments to dissect the subject matter for efficient evaluation and all-inclusive findings. It is the Spiritists who would doom the Divine Monad to a terrible torment, filled with gross earthly experiences, without the smallest ray of spirituality to enlighten them!

Richmond, of Jefferson, Ohio, requesting me to embody the facts and reasons in support of the alleged Spiritual origin of the Manifestations, which he proposed to accompany with a critical review and numerous facts and observations of his own, and expressing a desire that the whole might be published in a volume of several hundred pages. Dr. Richmond's letters in the Tribune had previously attracted very general attention, and he was regarded, at that time, as the most formidable opponent to the Spiritual theory in this country. Indeed, the editor of the Tribune had expressed the opinion that he was the ablest man which the Spiritual phenomena had called into the field; and it was manifest to all, that he had at least the candor to acknowledge the facts, if he had not the ability to explain them, on his favorite hypothesis. All other opposing theories seemed childish or absurd, while the one suggested by my correspondent certainly demanded the most serious consideration. I had no wish to shun the proposed ordeal; but having to perform, in addition to numerous other duties, the entire editorial labor of a weekly paper and a monthly magazine, I was quite too much occupied to accept the proposition of Dr. Richmond, which, for these reasons, was respectfully declined. Gellman vigorously defends the coherence of the concept of a mystical experience of God against philosophical objections, and evaluates attempts to provide alternative explanations from sociology and neuropsychology. He then carefully examines feminist objections to male philosophers' treatments of mystical experience of God and to the traditional hierarchal concept of God.
