Book The Religions of Ancient Israel

Download or read book The Religions of Ancient Israel written by Ziony Zevit and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most far-reaching interdisciplinary investigation into the religion of ancient Israel ever attempted. The author draws on textual readings, archaeological and historical data and epigraphy to determine what is known about the Israelite religions during the Iron Age (1200-586 BCE). The evidence is synthesized within the structure of an Israelite worldview and ethos involving kin, tribes, land, traditional ways and places of worship, and a national deity. Professor Zevit has originated this interpretive matrix through insights, ideas, and models developed in the academic study of religion and history within the context of the humanities. He is strikingly original, for instance, in his contention that much of the Psalter was composed in praise of deities other than Yahweh. Through his book, the author has set a precedent which should encourage dialogue and cooperative study between all ancient historians and archaeologists, but particularly between Iron Age archaeologists and biblical scholars. The work challenges many conclusions of previous scholarship about the nature of the Israelites' religion.

Book Shaking Hands with the Devil

Download or read book Shaking Hands with the Devil written by William James Abraham and published by Highland Loch Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of 9/11 much has been written on terrorism. Some have examined the potential relation between religion and terrorism, few, if any, have studied the relation between theology and terrorism. In the latter case, the crucial issue is whether theology provides indirect or direct motivation and justification for terrorist acts. Drawing on his childhood and youth in Northern Ireland, William J. Abraham tackles the latter question head on. He argues that religious themes and practices play a pivotal indirect role in terrorism in Ireland and shows that theology plays a pivotal direct role in forms of Islamist terrorism. Hence current forms of terrorism cannot be fully understood without coming to terms with the crucial place of religion and theology in their origins and persistent existence. Beyond this he explores what ordinary people can do to respond to terrorism, what they should expect from the state by way of protection, how they can resist pious nonsense about forgiveness in respect to terrorism, and how they can face the depth of evil that terrorism represents for all of us. Written with economy and energy, this book is an eye-opener on terrorism; it is also a rigorous theological response to the moral and spiritual challenges posed by one of the great evils of our times.

Book Greek Myth and Religion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the collected papers of Albert Henrichs on numerous subjects in ancient Greek myth and religion. What was ancient Greek religion really like? What is the reality of belief and action that lies behind the unwieldy sources, which stem from vast areas and epochs of the ancient world? What is the meaning, intended and otherwise, of religious action and speech in ancient Greece? Who were the Greek gods, how were they worshipped, and how were they viewed by those who worshipped them? One of the leading students of ancient Greek religion over the past five decades, Albert Henrichs, the Eliot Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University, combines wide and deep learning, a pragmatic, incisive approach to the sources, and an apt use of comparative perspectives. Henrichs breaks new ground in discussing sacrifice, libation, cultic identity, religious action and speech, epiphany, and the personalities of the gods. Special attention is devoted to ancient Greek sources on the ancient Persian prophet Mani, founder of Manichaeism. As a group, Albert Henrichs’ papers on Greek religion offer a basic education on Greek myth and religion and constitute a blueprint for serious study of the subject.

Book Normative Identity

  • Author : Per Bauhn
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2017-05-04
  • ISBN : 1783485787
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Normative Identity written by Per Bauhn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normative Identity is about how we define ourselves and others in terms of our ideas about the good and the right. Conflict as well as cooperation spring from our normative identity. Terrorists as well as social reformers find meaning and justification for their actions in their beliefs about whom and what they are and should be. But normative identities are not immune to rational criticism. This book argues that we should try to develop for ourselves a complex normative identity, based on the values of truth, justice, and beauty and consistent with the requirements of rational agency. Per Bauhn develops distinct but interrelated themes in moral philosophy to offer a new understanding of the relation between identity, values, meaning and agency. Ultimately he outlines a normative identity that is both rationally justified and can function as a source of meaning and motivation.
