Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and Religion These lectures were delivered at the University of North Carolina on the mcnair Foundation in May, 1918. They cannot claim to be an exhaus tive discussion of their theme, but they at least ex press an attitude of mind. It may be that they may hearten some of those who, without abating their devotion to the cause of international peace, have been forced by the course of events to see no possibility of attaining that goal until the world is delivered by war from the menace of Ger man imperialisrri. At all events they are a sincere attempt to estimate two of the spiritual forces that underlie social evolution. If I have not dealt at length with the economic and geographical factors of history, it is because I believe that eco nomic determinism fails to account for human progress and makes a sorry showing as a final ex planation of the titanic struggle in which the world is engaged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Patriotism and Piety, Jonathan Den Hartog argues that the question of how religion would function in American society was decided in the decades after the Constitution and First Amendment established a legal framework. Den Hartog shows that among the wide array of politicians and public figures struggling to define religion’s place in the new nation, Federalists stood out—evolving religious attitudes were central to Federalism, and the encounter with Federalism strongly shaped American Christianity. Den Hartog describes the Federalist appropriations of religion as passing through three stages: a "republican" phase of easy cooperation inherited from the experience of the American Revolution; a "combative" phase, forged during the political battles of the 1790s–1800s, when the destiny of the republic was hotly contested; and a "voluntarist" phase that grew in importance after 1800. Faith became more individualistic and issue-oriented as a result of the actions of religious Federalists. Religious impulses fueled party activism and informed governance, but the redirection of religious energies into voluntary societies sapped party momentum, and religious differences led to intraparty splits. These developments altered not only the Federalist Party but also the practice and perception of religion in America, as Federalist insights helped to create voluntary, national organizations in which Americans could practice their faith in interdenominational settings. Patriotism and Pietyfocuses on the experiences and challenges confronted by a number of Federalists, from well-known leaders such as John Adams, John Jay, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and Timothy Dwight to lesser-known but still important figures such as Caleb Strong, Elias Boudinot, and William Jay.

Download or read book God and War written by Raymond Haberski, Jr. and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long considered their country to be good—a nation "under God" with a profound role to play in the world. Yet nothing tests that proposition like war. Raymond Haberski argues that since 1945 the common moral assumptions expressed in an American civil religion have become increasingly defined by the nation's experience with war. God and War traces how three great postwar “trials”—the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and the War on Terror—have revealed the promise and perils of an American civil religion. Throughout the Cold War, Americans combined faith in God and faith in the nation to struggle against not only communism but their own internal demons. The Vietnam War tested whether America remained a nation "under God," inspiring, somewhat ironically, an awakening among a group of religious, intellectual and political leaders to save the nation's soul. With the tenth anniversary of 9/11 behind us and the subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan winding down, Americans might now explore whether civil religion can exist apart from the power of war to affirm the value of the nation to its people and the world.

Book Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes

Download or read book Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes written by Steven B. Smith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rediscovery of patriotism as a virtue in line with the core values of democracy in an extremist age The concept of patriotism has fallen on hard times. What was once a value that united Americans has become so politicized by both the left and the right that it threatens to rip apart the social fabric. On the right, patriotism has become synonymous with nationalism and an “us versus them” worldview, while on the left it is seen as an impediment to acknowledging important ethnic, religious, or racial identities and a threat to cosmopolitan globalism. Steven B. Smith reclaims patriotism from these extremist positions and advocates for a patriotism that is broad enough to balance loyalty to country against other loyalties. Describing how it is a matter of both the head and the heart, Smith shows how patriotism can bring the country together around the highest ideals of equality and is a central and ennobling disposition that democratic societies cannot afford to do without.
