Especially, now that Emrys’ former student, the Lady of the Lake, has joined forces with the cunning immortal Alamaz. After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.

Book Pilgrims Patrons and Place

Download or read book Pilgrims Patrons and Place written by Phyllis Granoff and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together essays by anthropologists, scholars of religion, and art historians on the subject of sacred place and sacred biography in Asia. The chapters span a broad geographical area that includes India, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, and China, and explore issues from the classical and medieval periods to the present. They show how sacred places have a plurality of meanings and how in their construction, secular politics, private religious experience, and sectarian rivalry intersect. Contributors explore the fundamental challenges that religious groups face as they expand from their homeland or confront the demands of modernity. While some chapters deal with well-known religious movements and sites, others discuss little-known groups and help to enrich our understanding of the diversity of religious belief in Asia. The book will be of interest not only to scholars of Asian religion and hagiography, but also to others who seek to understand the ways in which religious groups accommodate the challenges of new environments and new times.

Download or read book Guan Yu written by Barend J. ter Haar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guan Yu was a minor general in the early third century CE, who supported one of numerous claimants to the throne. He was captured and executed by enemy forces in 219. He eventually became one the most popular and influential deities of imperial China under the name Lord Guan or Emperor Guan, of the same importance as the Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin. This is a study of his cult, but also of the tremendous power of oral culture in a world where writing became increasingly important. In this study, we follow the rise of the deity through his earliest stage as a hungry ghost, his subsequent adoption by a prominent Buddhist monastery during the Tang (617-907) as its miraculous supporter, and his recruitment by Daoist ritual specialists during the Song dynasty (960-1276) as an exorcist general. He was subsequently known as a rain god, a protector against demons and barbarians, and, eventually, a moral paragon and almost messianic saviour. Throughout his divine life, the physical prowess of the deity, more specifically Lord Guan's ability to use violent action for doing good, remained an essential dimension of his image. Most research ascribes a decisive role in the rise of his cult to the literary traditions of the Three Kingdoms, best known from the famous novel by this name. This book argues that the cult arose from oral culture and spread first and foremost as an oral practice.
