Book The Economics of School Quality Investments in Developing Countries

Download or read book The Economics of School Quality Investments in Developing Countries written by Paul Glewwe and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a method to estimate the economic returns to investments in school quality. While economists have long had methods to estimate rates of return to additional years of schooling, until now there has been no method for analyzing returns to investments in school quality. This is regrettable, because many, if not most, government education policies focus on school quality. Empirical work using data from Ghana shows that investments in school quality have higher rates of return than investments in increased years in schooling. The bulk of the study is written by Paul Glewwe, with some coauthored and contributed pieces from his co-researchers Jaikishan Desai, Dean Jolliffe, Raylynn Oliver and Wim Vijverberg, who worked as research assistants on this project.

Book excerpt: This book draws on evidence from a large number of developing countries to assess the impact of market reforms on the provision of education and health services. The contributors show that approaches that seek merely to pass more of their costs to consumers perform less well than is often claimed and that improved cost-effectiveness of health and education systems requires far more than changes in the sources and mechanisms of obtaining finance.

Book The Voluntary City

Download or read book The Voluntary City written by David T Beito and published by Independent Institute. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembling a rich history and analysis of large-scale, private and voluntary, community-based provision of social services, urban infrastructure, and community governance, this book provides suggestions on how to restore the vitality of city life. Historically, the city was considered a center of commerce, knowledge, and culture, a haven for safety and a place of opportunity. Today, however, cities are widely viewed as centers for crime, homelessness, drug wars, business failure, impoverishment, transit gridlock, illiteracy, pollution, unemployment, and other social ills. In many cities, government increasingly dominates life, consuming vast resources to cater to special-interest groups. This book reveals how the process of providing local public goods through the dynamism of freely competitive, market-based entrepreneurship is unmatched in renewing communities and strengthening the bonds of civil society.

James Tooley's extraordinary ability to braid together personal experience, community action, individual courage, and family devotion, brought readers to the very heart of education. This book follows Tooley in his travels from the largest shanty town in Africa to the mountains of Gansu, China, and of the children, parents, teachers, and entrepreneurs who taught him that the poor are not waiting for educational handouts. They are building their own schools and learning to save themselves. Download or read book Private and Public Initiatives written by J. van der Gaag and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank helps countries to arrive at whatever combination of public and private control is best for their particular economic circumstances. This booklet describes that work and summarizes examples of private-sector involvement in health and education provision in the developing world today. The examples also illustrate what the World Bank is doing to help bring those outside government-communities, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), private voluntary organizations, private providers, and corporations--into the design and implementation of social-service projects. Part 1 describes the historical roots of present trends--the development of modern health care systems, mass education systems--and the inequities that currently exist in health and education. The role of the World Bank in eliminating the social deficit and reducing poverty worldwide is described. The World Bank advocates using competitive markets to organize the production and distribution of goods and services and using a market-oriented approach to development. Part 2 offers examples of World Bank assistance in Kenya, Pakistan, Bolivia, India, Columbia, Burkino Faso, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Estonia, and Brazil. Sixteen boxes, 5 figures, and 2 tables are included. (Contains 63 references.) (LMI)

Book Women s Education in Developing Countries

Download or read book Women s Education in Developing Countries written by Elizabeth M. King and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do women in most developing countries lag behind men in literacy? Why do women get less schooling than men? This anthology examines the educational decisions that deprive women of an equal education. It assembles the most up-to-date data, organized by region. Each paper links the data with other measures of economic and social development. This approach helps explain the effects different levels of education have on womens' fertility, mortality rates, life expectancy, and income. Also described are the effects of women's education on family welfare. The authors look at family size and women's labor status and earnings. They examine child and maternal health, as well as investments in children's education. Their investigation demonstrates that women with a better education enjoy greater economic growth and provide a more nurturing family life. It suggests that when a country denies women an equal education, the nation's welfare suffers. Current strategies used to improve schooling for girls and women are examined in detail. The authors suggest an ambitious agenda for educating women. It seeks to close the gender gap by the next century. Published for The World Bank by The Johns Hopkins University Press.
