Book excerpt: Why do people read newspapers? How is community possible in an urban setting? Answers to both these questions have been attempted in the theorizing of urban sociologist and in journalist accounts of the role of local newspapers. Newspapers are said to foster a sense of community. The existence of local community ties, on the other hand, is said to foster newspaper circulation and readership. By focusing on the community/communication relationship, this book raises questions and analyzes the nature of these relationships and how they work.

Download or read book Communication and Community written by Gregory J. Shepherd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This distinctive volume combines synthetic theoretical essays and reports of original research to address the interrelations of communication and community in a wide variety of settings. Chapters address interpersonal conversation and communal relationships; journalism organizations and political reporting; media use and community participation; communication styles and alternative organizations; and computer networks and community building; among other topics. The contents offer synthetic literature reviews, philosophical essays, reports of original research, theory development, and criticism. While varying in theoretical perspective and research focus, each of the chapters also provides its own approach to the practice of communication and community. In this way, the book provides a recurrent thematic emphasis on the pragmatic consequences of theory and research for the activities of communication and living together in communities. Taken as a whole, this collection illustrates that communication and community cannot be adequately analyzed in any context without considering other contexts, other levels of analysis, and other media and modes of communication. As such, it provides important insights for scholars, students, educators, and researchers concerned with communication across the full range of contexts, media, and modes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Society is focused on the mastery of new communications tools and technologies and is dedicated to creating a bridge between the academic and theoretical pursuit of these topics and the pragmatic implementation of new media and communications tools and methodologies, with an emphasis on the establishment and promotion of best practices. This issue of the JNCR features several contributions that support this underlying ideal, including: an analysis of Internet dependency relations and Internet news exposure, a report on government in the Web 2.0 era and the public sector's use of social media, an exploration of the social media release and its implications for the PR-journalist relationship and a case study that focuses on the ethics of journalism and public relations in the new media environment. In addition, SNCR Founding Fellow Elizabeth Albrycht witnesses the Venice Biennale online and proposes the notion of the noosphere. And, we are pleased to feature the executive summary, authored by SNCR Senior Fellow Paul Gillin, of an upcoming SNCR research study New Media, New Influencers and Implications for the Public Relations Profession. This research, made possible by a grant from the Institute for Public Relations and Wieck Media, examines the criteria communications professionals use to define new influencers; explores how social media is being used to communicate with these influentials; and how organizations are measuring the effects of such efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority in the United States comprising nearly 3 percent of the population, yet they are rarely given coverage in the U.S. media, as this book demonstrates. This book, written by an 11-year reporter of The Washington Post who is now an Associate Dean at Ithaca College, is broad in scope and studies the relationship between mass media and this important minority, including: 1) examines the scope and type of coverage afforded Asian Americans in mainstream newspapers through a content analysis of twenty leading newspapers for the year March 1, 1994 to February 28, 1995; 2) examines the opinions of Asian Americans who work in print, radio, and television media both in mainstream media and specialized Asian American media, through a survey asking their negative and positive experiences on the job as related to their ethnicity, and their opnions on how well the media cover Asian Americans; and 3) an historical examination of Asian Americans and media treatment of Asian Americans, and specialized publications serving Asian Americans. No other book has looked at media coverage of Asian Americans as in-depth as this fascinating account of how attitudes towards Asian Americans are shaped in America through questionable coverage of this diverse segment of the population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalism in Crisis addresses the concerns of scholars, activists, and journalists committed to Canadian journalism as a democratic institution and as a set of democratic practices. The authors look within Canada and abroad for solutions for balancing the Canadian media ecology. Public policies have been central to the creation and shaping of Canada's media system and, rather than wait for new technologies or economic models, the contributors offer concrete recommendations for how public policies can foster journalism that can support democratic life in twenty-first century Canada. Their work, which includes new theoretical perspectives and valuable discussions of journalism practices in public, private, and community media, should be read by professional and citizen journalists, academics, media activists, policy makers and media audiences concerned about the future of democratic journalism in Canada.

Download or read book Stigma and Sexual Orientation written by Gregory M. Herek and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-12-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether engendered by homophobia, heterosexism, or simply prejudice, violence and discrimination continue to persecute the gay community, persistent in the courtroom, on the streets, and in the voting booth. Through the 1990s, empirical research on this phenomenon has advanced at a rapid pace and the results of studies using more sophisticated theories and methods to study heterosexual responses to homosexuality have increasingly found their way into mainstream journals and books. Timely and accessible, Stigma and Sexual Orientation makes a significant contribution toward the deeper understanding of homophobia, in addition to providing much-needed insight into the issue of prejudice in general. Under the skillful editorship of Gregory M. Herek, discussions in this volume include: - the nature of antigay prejudice, stereotypes, and behaviors - the consequences of homophobia and related phenomena on the well-being of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals - the critical need for psychology and science to examine homophobia and related issues Victimization of individuals in the gay community is testimony to the ugliness of societal prejudices and the constant stresses imposed by such biases. Stigma and Sexual Orientation closely examines issue complexities and equips the reader with insights necessary to better assist members of this population. Academics, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and students will find the volume a welcome and enlightening addition to the extant literature.
