Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Study of Women In Midlife GRACE K. BARUCH AND JEANNE BROOKS-GUNN To describe the middle years-that relatively long span when one is neither young nor old-as a neglected period may no longer be accurate, given current scientific and popular interest in adult development and aging. But midlife is still too often seen merely as a kind of staging area on the way to old age, when one gathers one's forces and tries to stock up on assets-health, money, relationships-that will be needed for the rigors of the last phase of life. The middle years have been characterized more as a transition period than as a time of growth, satisfaction, and creativity. As this volume will show, although midlife is not without its difficulties, it is, for many women, a time of unexpected pleasure, even power. MAJOR THEMES A central theme of this volume is the impact of social change. The influence of economic conditions, of ideology, of the normative timing of such life events as age of marriage and childbearing, are addressed in many chapters from hlany different perspectives. Social changes are shown to have both negative and positive consequences. On the nega tive side, for example, the sex differential in life expectancy is a biosocial phenomenon that greatly restricts the availability of sexual partners-or, more precisely, heterosexual partners-for older women.

Book The College Dropout and the Utilization of Talent

Download or read book The College Dropout and the Utilization of Talent written by Lawrence A. Pervin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complicated personal and institutional factors that influence a student's decision to terminate his studies; it investigates ways to enable him to resume his education and utilize his talents. The opening chapters approach the problem from an administrative point of view, reporting on statistical and psychological research and indicating future directions. Subsequent chapters deal with personal dimensions: relations between the student and his college environment; the effects of timing of readmission; family attitudes toward the dropout; the effectiveness of psychiatric treatment; personality traits that contribute to a student’s difficulties. College administrators will find this study relevant to policy decisions on admissions, medical services, and course structuring. Clinicians and researchers will find guidelines for therapy and suggestions for further investigation. Finally, parents of college dropouts will gain new understanding of the problem and the best way to meet it. Originally published in 1966. Book I Should be Helping My Family

Download or read book I Should be Helping My Family written by Madeline Rayon and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many challenges awaiting new college students including time management, keeping up with assignments, navigating school and employment, and maintaining relationships with family and friends. However, first-generation college students have been shown to have more difficulty adapting to college than their peers whose parents are college graduates. This is even more challenging if the students are having difficulty balancing their roles as family members and college students or feel guilty for pursuing an education. The purpose of the present study is to consider whether role conflict is related to academic achievement guilt and how these factors are related to the academic outcomes of college students. This study focuses on (1) the psychometric characteristics of two scales developed for this study, (2) whether greater role conflict and academic guilt predicted lower levels of academic achievement, (3) gender, ethnicity, and college student generation status differences in their experiences of role conflict, academic guilt, and academic achievement outcomes. Participants (N = 398; 88.4% female, mean age: 20.37 years, 45.2% Hispanic, 22.1% White, 55.7% first-generation college student) from a 4-year university completed an online survey assessing role conflict, academic achievement guilt, grade point average, and confidence to continue their educations. Results of confirmatory factor analyses indicated that both the role conflict and academic achievement guilt measures are psychometrically sound. Results demonstrated that greater role conflict was related to GPA and both greater role conflict and greater academic guilt were related to less confidence to continue education. Lastly, Hispanic, and first-generation college students reported more role conflict, academic guilt, and lower GPA compared to White, and continuing-generation college students. Future research and potential interventions are discussed in terms of creating a more supportive environment for college students.

Book Role Overload Among Undergraduate College Students

Download or read book Role Overload Among Undergraduate College Students written by Gregory A Rich and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores stress in the form of role overload among college students. A conceptual model is developed and tested empirically on a sample of 224 students. Students responsible for paying their own tuition were found to work more hours, which in turn led to greater role overload. Student preference for polychronic (as opposed to monochronic) time use was also linked to higher role overload. The relationship between technophobia and overload was not supported. Finally, role overload lead to lower student satisfaction with the university; and there was marginal support for an inverse relationship between role overload and GPA.
