Book excerpt: In recent years, it has been found that interdependence of the rotations of neighboring bonds is of primary importance to the physical behavior of polymers. Mathematical methods for handling interdependent rotations were developed by Lifson and others for the calculation of characteristic polymer dimensions. The Gibbs-DiMarzio theory of the glass transition in polymers is formulated in such a way that interdependent rotations may be taken into account. Using an empirically estimated value of 0.025 for the free volume fraction at the transition temperature, the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory was fitted to empirically estimated transition temperatures for the n-alkanes, hexane to eicosane. A good fit was obtained with E sub 1 = 768 cal/mole for the energy difference between trans and gauche states, and gauche rotations of opposite sign excluded.

Book excerpt: The relationship between cohesive energy (c.e.) or cohesive energy density (c.e.d.) and the glass transition temperature T sub G of polymers was re-examined on the basis of literature data. For polymers with T sub G's above 25 C there is no correlation between published or calculated values of c.e. or c.e.d. and T sub G. However, for the rest of the polymers there is a linear relationship between c.e.d. and T sub G, and a broad relationship between c.e. and T sub G. These results imply that c.e.d. is the regulating, though not the only, factor in determining T sub G's up to values of approximately 25 C. (Author).

From the dependence of the logarithm of configurational entropy vs. the logarithm of temperature, the authors suggest that it is possible to successfully predict the relations between the values of m for different glass formers.Following this, microscopic local dynamics were analyzed by way of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations through the conformational transition behavior across a wide range of temperatures. The glass transition temperature may be predicted through the intersection of separate temperature dependences. Such local dynamics were found to become gradually heterogeneous when the temperature went down close to the glassy state.The closing chapter provides a brief summary of the studies relevant to glass transitions in well-defined lipids systems such as anhydrous and/or water mixed systems. Then, some current problems and future problems are described.

But right after this comes the question: What have I made, and for what is it good? This leads to the important topic of the structure-property relations to which this book is devoted. Polymers are very large and very complicated systems; their character ization has to begin with the chemical composition, configuration, and con formation of the individual molecule. The first chapter is devoted to this broad objective. The immediate physical consequences, discussed in the second chapter, form the basis for the physical nature of polymers: the supermolecular interactions and arrangements of the individual macromolecules. The third chapter deals with the important question: How are these chemical and physical structures experimentally determined? The existing methods for polymer characterization are enumerated and discussed in this chapter. The following chapters go into more detail. For most applications-textiles, films, molded or extruded objects of all kinds-the mechanical and the thermal behaviors of polymers are of pre ponderant importance, followed by optical and electric properties. Chapters 4 through 9 describe how such properties are rooted in and dependent on the chemical structure. More-detailed considerations are given to certain particularly important and critical properties such as the solubility and permeability of polymeric systems. Book excerpt: The physical properties of polymers are very much dictated by where the operating temperature lies with respect to the transition temperature between glassy and rubbery states. The precise identification of this glass transition temperature, Tg, is critical in assessing the feasibility of a polymer for a given application. In this book, the behavior of polymers near their Tg and the capability of predicting Tg using theoretical and empirical models is assessed. While all polymers undergo structural relaxation at various temperatures both nearly above and below Tg, practical assessment of a single consistent Tg is successfully performed through consideration of only immediate thermal history and thermodynamic properties. The determination of Tg for a wide variety of polymers of theoretically infinite chain length has been found to be accurately performed through the use of novel quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models. The supplementation of such values to configurational entropy and molecular weight relational models can be used for estimation of Tg for shorter chain length polymers within the same homologous series, but only to a specific lower bound.
