Book excerpt: This quantitative correlational study examines the relationship between self-directed learning readiness and learning style of adult students in an asynchronous distance learning environment in South Taiwan. A demographic questionnaire, the Asynchronous Distance Learning Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (ADLSDLRS), and Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) were administered to 385 participants from Open University of Kaohsiung. The research found that the adult learners' self-directed learning readiness with demographic has significant difference, the adult learners' learning style with demographic has no significant difference, and self-directed learning readiness and learning style has no significant difference.

Book The Relationship Between Self directed Learning and Information Literacy Among Adult Learners in Higher Education

Download or read book The Relationship Between Self directed Learning and Information Literacy Among Adult Learners in Higher Education written by Tiffani Reneau Conner and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-directed learning and information literacy. Participants completed the Personal Orientation in Self-Directed Learning Scale ([PRO-SDLS], Stockdale, 2003) and the Information Literacy Test ([ILT], James Madison University, 2003). The PRO-SDLS is a self-report scale consisting of 25 statements about self-directed learning preferences in college classrooms. The ILT is a 60-item multiple-choice test that assesses the information literacy skills of college students. Correlation, ANOVA, and multiple regressions were used to test relationships and differences between self-directed learning and information literacy. Despite claims that teaching information literacy creates self-directed learners, composite scores on the PRO-SDLS and the ILT indicated no statistically significant relationship exists. Likewise, no statistically significant differences were found between the bachelors, masters, or doctoral level participant scores. While composite scores on the PRO-SDLS did not predict scores on the ILT, there was a negative, statistically significant relationship between the Initiative factor on the PRO-SDLS and ACRL (2000) Information Literacy Competency Standard 5 -- Ethics & Understanding sub-scale of the ILT. Implications for practice and suggestions for further research are proposed along with discussions and conclusions.

Book Investigating Self directed Learning Readiness Private Tuition and Organisational Level Among Working Adult Singaporeans

Download or read book Investigating Self directed Learning Readiness Private Tuition and Organisational Level Among Working Adult Singaporeans written by Gabriel Gervais and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cited in the literature as one of the more fundamental principles of andragogy, self-directed learning attributes to all adult learners an inclination towards assuming more responsibility for, and taking control of their own learning. A substantial body of research has examined the degree of self-directed learning readiness (SDLRS) in various national, cultural and institutional contexts but none has so far examined, as this study did, the extent of self-directed learning readiness among working adult Singaporeans and to further explore the correlations between their SDLRS score, prior exposure to private tuition and the organisational level that they occupy at work. Three main conclusions were reached. Firstly, when compared to other adults worldwide, working adult Singaporean learners were found to be below-average self-directed learners. Secondly, a prior exposure to private tuition in primary and secondary school was found to be negatively correlated to their readiness for learning self-direction. For private tuition attended during secondary school however, that relationship was found to be only marginally significant. Thirdly, the organisational level that working adult Singaporeans achieved at work was positively correlated to their self- directed learning readiness, but, again, that finding was only marginally significant. However, the SDLRS mean score difference between managers and non-managers was found to be significant. This research concludes with a number of recommendations pertaining to the identification and support of students with a low-level of learning self-direction.

Abstract: Abstract Increasing attention has been given to development of abilities in self-directed learning, especially over the last 10 years. Self-directed learning is valuable to learners because it is believed to enhance creativity, help avoid blind acceptance of existing knowledge, and help learners adapt to a rapidly-changing environment. Self-directed learning readiness was defined as the degree an individual possesses in attitude, ability and personality characteristics necessary for self-directed learning. A study with 34 students was carried out. The research data is collected from questionnaires and focus group interviews. Research will emphasis on the correlation between students' SDLRS and their respective attitudes toward three pedagogical approaches namely expository, inductive and task-based approach. The result indicated that students with higher readiness of self-directed learning will prefer a more "self-directedness" pedagogical approach, while students with a low degree of self-directed learning readiness will prefer a less "self-directedness" approach. It was concluded that teachers should adapt their teaching styles to match students' readiness of self direction and to increase students' self-directedness. Problems occur when dependent learners are mismatched with non-directive teachers and when self-directed learners are mismatched with highly directive teachers. Book Determining the Role that Self directed Learning Readiness and Internet Self efficacy Have on Online Learning Self efficacy for the Purpose of Increasing Persistence in Online Courses for Adult Learners

Download or read book Determining the Role that Self directed Learning Readiness and Internet Self efficacy Have on Online Learning Self efficacy for the Purpose of Increasing Persistence in Online Courses for Adult Learners written by Darin Gray and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Retention and persistence rates in online courses are lower than that of conventional courses for adult learners. One of the major factors for students dropping out or persisting in an online course was student characteristics at the beginning of the course. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the student characteristics Internet self-efficacy (ISE), self-directed learning readiness (SDLR), and online learning self-efficacy (OLSE) for adult learners. Specifically, the present study sought to determine how independent variables, SDLR (a learning factor in online courses) and ISE (a technological factor in online courses) together influence a dependent variable, OLSE. The study also investigated the individual contributions of ISE and SDLR on OLSE as well as the relationship between ISE and SDLR. The research questions were answered through an online survey instrument comprised of questions from the Internet Self-Efficacy Scale (ISS), the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), and the Online Learning Self-Efficacy Scale (OLSES). ISS is a Likert-type scale that assesses participants' confidence with respect to use of the Internet to perform certain functions. SDLRS measures respondents' level of self-directedness through a series of Likert-style questions. OLSES is a Likert-based assessment that measures learner control, the learner's ability to learn with others in an Internet environment and the learners' Internet skills with respect to learning. One hundred eighty-nine participants completed the instrument. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlations, a path analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings show that ISE and SDLR are significant contributors to OLSE in adult learners. Based on the study's findings, instructional designers of online courses and online learning educators can reduce attrition in online courses by intentionally designing courses to increase students' ISE and SDLRS with the goal of increasing students' OLSE. For existing courses, instructors can assess students' ISE, SDLR, and OLSE at the beginning of a course to identify students who may be more likely to drop the course. The student scores can help the instructor to provide additional support to those students. In addition, adult students can identify weaknesses that could lead them to dropping an online course by measuring their ISE, SDLR and OLSE prior to taking the course. Once their weaknesses are identified, the students would be able to find resources to strengthen their ISE and SDLR."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.
