Book The Relationship Between College Counselor Work Responsibilities and Burnout

Download or read book The Relationship Between College Counselor Work Responsibilities and Burnout written by Gregory Lee Bohner and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College counseling has been a unique profession among the helping professions that seeks to provide mental health and academic support to college students. One vocational danger for college counselors has been the onset of burnout. The loss of resources leading to burnout, as explained by the Conservation of Resources theory, may have been connected to today's higher education administrative position of performing more responsibilities with less staffing. This research study examined the relationship between work duties assigned to college counselors, as measured by the College Counselor Activity Rating Scale, and the level of burnout for those counselors, as measured by the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. The first five hypotheses examined the relationship between burnout and non-counseling duties by utilizing a hierarchical multiple regression analysis with various tests of mediation and moderation. The sixth hypothesis explored the assertion that college counselors at small institutions of higher education (institutional enrollment less than 5000 students) are more likely to engage in non-counseling duties. Members of the American College Counseling Association were recruited to serve as the population sample frame for the study. Because no instrument existed to measure counseling and non-counseling duties for college counselors, the College Counselor Activity Rating Scale was developed as a part of the study. Validation procedures were utilized in the form of an expert panel and pilot study for the College Counselor Activity Rating Scale. Of the six null hypotheses, all six were retained with limited power. Further analysis showed statistically significant relationships between burnout, perceived workload, and meaningful work. In addition, three non-counseling duties items, all related to administrative duties, were statistically significantly related to burnout. The key findings, implications and recommendations for future research were discussed.

Book Work Environment and Job related Burnout

Download or read book Work Environment and Job related Burnout written by Bankston J. Dozier and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Job-related burnout has come to be most often defined as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal efficacy that can occur among individuals working within the human services professions. Frequently debilitating in nature, job-related burnout is often a consequence of chronic occupational stressors; thus, the more stressful the work environment, the greater the potential for burnout to occur. This is especially true of work environments in which organizational support is perceived as being limited. With this in mind, the present study focuses on a group of professionals who work within what many individuals would agree as being one of the most stress-inducing environments: the prison system. Mental health counselors, like doctors, are often only called upon when individuals are in some type of crisis and desire an immediate fix of some type. Already a stress inducing profession, when one adds the stress of working within a prison environment, and the often limited resources associated with it, to the mix, one can easily see why burnout becomes a distinct possibility for individuals choosing this career path. In an endeavor to expand the understanding of the relationship between burnout and organizational social support, the present study examines the strength of the relationships between each of the three dimensions of job-related burnout and the levels of perceived organizational support for mental health counselors working in a prison setting. In addition to providing some basic demographic information, all participants completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey and the Work Relationships Index. Correlational analyses were used to determine the strength of the hypothesized relationships between the determined variables. The results indicated that although there were distinct relationships between each of the three experienced dimensions of job-related burnout and perceived level of organizational support, only the correlation between level of experienced emotional exhaustion and perceived level of organizational support was found to be significant at the p >.05 level of significance. Based on the findings, recommendations for improving employees' perceptions of organizational support and reducing the number of employees' work-related stressors were provided.

Book A Study to Examine the Relationship Between Burnout selected Demographic Characteristics and Supervisory Support Among School Psychologists

Download or read book A Study to Examine the Relationship Between Burnout selected Demographic Characteristics and Supervisory Support Among School Psychologists written by Jeremiah Kevin Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal focus of this investigation was to add to the very limited body of knowledge on stress and burnout among certificated school psychologists. The objective of this study was to learn both the incidence of burnout and the relationship between that incidence and selected demographic variables and supervisory support among certificated school psychologists in Oregon. A sample of 70 school psychologists responded to a three-part research instrument consisting of a demographic data sheet, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the Work Experience Scale (WES). The primary measuring instrument the MBI, provided a measure of perceived burnout in terms of the level of burnout of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. The Work Experience Scale provided a measure of perceived level of supervisory support. School Psychologists were grouped according to the following demographic and job-related variables: 1. Educational level. 2. Type of academic preparation. 3. Years of experience as a school psychologist. 4. Years of experience in special education. 5. Sex. 6. Income. 7. Years in present job. 8. Geographical work setting. Correlations of coefficient were computed to determine the degree of relationship between dependent burnout variables and significant independent demographic variables. Means and standard deviation for the study population and Maslach's sample population were performed to see if material differences exist between these two populations. Analysis of variance techniques were used to compare dependent burnout variables with selected independent demographic variables. The Newman Kuels Multiple Comparison procedure was performed to determine if statistical differences exist between geographical work settings. Multiple regression techniques were used to identify the relationship between the dependent burnout variables and all independent demographic variables. Findings rejected the hypothesis that there was no significant relationship to burnout level of depersonalization and income, the burnout level of emotional exhaustion and years on the job, emotional exhaustion and income, emotional exhaustion and supervisory support, emotional exhaustion and level of academic preparation, and level of personal accomplishment and work setting. All other hypotheses were rejected, however, significant relationships were found between the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization levels of burnout and selected independent demographic variables. Additionally, mean scores for the burnout subscales indicated moderate levels of burnout existed when respondent scoring information were compared against normative data.
