Book The Relationship of the Sensation Seeking Personality Motive to Burnout Injury and Job Satisfaction Among Firefighters

Download or read book The Relationship of the Sensation Seeking Personality Motive to Burnout Injury and Job Satisfaction Among Firefighters written by Margaret Ann Jensen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among sensation seeking, burnout, injury, and job satisfaction among firefighters. Participants included 93 firefighters from a southeastern fire department. Each participant was asked to fill out a packet of self-report surveys including a demographic form, Sensation Seeking Scale Form V, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Job Satisfaction Survey, Absenteeism form, and an On-The-Job Injury form. This exploratory study provided an initial assessment of personality in relation to burnout and injuries in firefighters. The information from this study will hopefully help fire chiefs and administrators to better understand firefighters and the factors influencing their burnout, injuries, and job satisfaction. This information may, in turn, be useful in developing strategies to reduce burnout and better identify risk-factors affecting burnout and job performance in this population.

Book No Time for Playing Cards

Download or read book No Time for Playing Cards written by Dane Carley and published by Fire Engineering Books & Videos. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we continue to see similar firefighter injuries and line-of-duty deaths (LODDs) repeated each year? We often respond with technical solutions, such as more SOGs, safety lists, and studying more strategies and tactics. But are there greater depths of technical knowledge in our profession that can make firefighting significantly safer? Does it also help to look at the human side of our profession? Other high-risk, high-consequence industries have reduced injuries and LODDs by 60%–80% just by focusing on human factors and performance. Turning your department into a higher reliability organization starts with building a learning culture and teaching firefighters to ask “why?” Authors Dane Carley and Craig Nelson have a passion for helping people and departments in the fire and emergency services become successful. The techniques, methods, and processes in this book are based their own research and data as well as studies from many other professions and industries interested in being the best. Readers will learn how to: • Measure for and demonstrate leadership • Focus solutions on human performance • Build resilient departments • Most importantly, reduce firefighter injuries and LODDs

Book Moderating Effects of Social Support and Humor on Burnout and PTSD Among Firefighters

Download or read book Moderating Effects of Social Support and Humor on Burnout and PTSD Among Firefighters written by Lauren Reierson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of traumatic exposure among firefighters has been widely studied within the psychological literature over the last two decades due to the high risk for such occurrences as compared to most other occupations. Firefighting is one of the most dangerous occupations in North America, with a considerable mortality rate. Previous research has shown that due to job-related trauma, firefighters have incurred higher rates of mental health concerns and job burnout. However, the function of humor among firefighters as a social bonding agent and coping strategy is a new concept. The aim of the present study was to explore the moderating effect of humor and social support on PTSD and burnout among currently employed firefighters working in Southern California. It was hypothesized that: (a) trauma exposure would be significantly correlated with PTSD, burnout, and depression, (b) social support would moderate the effect of trauma on PTSD, burnout, and depression, (c) humor would act as a secondary moderator such that the moderating effect of social support would be conditional on the use of humor, and (d) sleep on and off shift would moderate the effect of trauma on PTSD and burnout. The participants recruited for this study were 153 (94% male, 71% Caucasian) currently employed firefighters from Southern California. Surveys completed through Qualtrics were analyzed using Hayes PROCESS macro model 3 and 1. Results showed that social support and humor independently predict PTSD symptoms, burnout, and depression. However, they do not significantly moderate the relationship between trauma experiences and PTSD or burnout symptoms. Furthermore, community support significantly moderated trauma experiences and depression symptoms. Finally, sleep on shift significantly moderated the relationship between trauma exposure and burnout symptoms, as well as sleep off shift on trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms. This study suggests that while social support and a sense of community are important factors in the well-being of a firefighter’s life, further treatment is needed to mitigate such painful symptoms due to the traumatic nature of their job. Furthermore, humor may function as a coping strategy among community members, but the results indicate that this is insufficient in the treatment and reduction of mental health concerns among firefighters on the job. One implication of these findings is that targeted behavioral health interventions within their community are essential to support the mental health of these firefighters. Furthermore, initiatives for increased sleep by employing agencies could significantly support the health and safety of this population.

Book The Relationship Between Stress Burnout and Mindfulness Among Firefighters

Download or read book The Relationship Between Stress Burnout and Mindfulness Among Firefighters written by Aniesa Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research indicates that majority of firefighters suffer from some level of stress and burnout. Stress is the mental or emotional strain resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Unaddressed stress leads to occupational burnout and other severe stress conditions. Firefighters are offered limited prevention measures to decrease stress related symptoms. This quantitative, correlational study investigated whether a statistically significant relationship exists between levels of stress, burnout, and mindfulness among United States firefighters who were members of an online firefighter forum. Stress was measured using Perceived Stress Scale-10. Burnout was measured using Maslach’s Burnout Inventory-HSS, with three factors (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment). Mindfulness was measured using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient test was used for all four hypotheses (n = 117). The first, second and third null hypotheses were rejected revealing a significant negative relationship between Perceived Stress and Mindfulness, Emotional Exhaustion and Mindfulness, and Depersonalization and Mindfulness. The null hypothesis for research question four was rejected because of a significant positive relationship between the Personal Accomplishment and Mindfulness. These findings expand scientific knowledge about firefighters and levels of stress, burnout and mindfulness. The current study confirms prior research that found similar relationships between stress, burnout, and mindfulness among other first responder professions. Further research could explore the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction interventions for firefighters specifically.

Book THERE S TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY EXPANDING THE NOMOLOGICAL NETWORK OF BURNOUT THROUGH THE PERSON ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

Download or read book THERE S TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY EXPANDING THE NOMOLOGICAL NETWORK OF BURNOUT THROUGH THE PERSON ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION written by Fiona Raines and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burnout is a psychological syndrome consisting of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment. It is associated with a depletion of intrinsic resources that results from prolonged exposure to work-related stress. Within the literature, it is well documented that the combination of elevated job demands and depleted resources is likely to lead to burnout. However, while this understanding emphasizes the environment, it fails to incorporate aspects of the person, like trait motivation. Trait motivation is an individual difference that influences how one interacts with or responds to the environment. Accordingly, the current studies expand the nomological network of burnout by exploring the impact of trait motivation on job demands, burnout, job satisfaction, and happiness. Based on the results presented, the relationship between job demands and burnout is not conditional on approach or avoidance motivation. Furthermore, the relationships between job demands, burnout, and happiness are not conditional on approach or avoidance motivation. However, the results support that the relationship between job demands and job satisfaction are conditional on avoidance motivation. Theoretical and practical implications of the studies are discussed.

Book When Helping Starts to Hurt

Download or read book When Helping Starts to Hurt written by William N. Grosch and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 1994 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A career in mental health can be rewarding and deeply satisfying. Yet, when clinicians fail to maintain balance between work, family, and leisure, they are vulnerable to burnout. At a time when mental health dollars are being stretched to the limit and practitioners in both the public and private sectors are facing increased caseloads, professional burnout is becoming more prevalent and troublesome." "Integrating Kohut's self psychology and Bowenian family systems theory, this book takes a systematic look at the roots of burnout. These go deep into the narcissistic vulnerability of the individual therapist, family-of-origin dynamics that are played out in the workplace, and stresses within and between current family and work systems that leave the therapist trying - and failing - to gain the appreciation that comes from pleasing everyone. When environmental demands increase and are prolonged, the boredom, exhaustion, despair, and poor judgment characteristic of burnout flourish." "In addition to offering advice on preventing burnout, the book presents a model for treatment. This is illustrated in short vignettes and one extended case study." "The authors share their optimism that burnout is not a given and that, through the use of professional peer group support, supervision, and individual therapy, it can be avoided or overcome."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How do we develop into leaders whom others will want to follow? Robert Neuschel firmly believed in the principle of servant leadership, which he learned early in his military career in World War II, where a demanding infantry captain taught him. "Always serve your troops first that you may command them better." The philosophy at the heart of The Servant Leader, recognized as one of the world's classic leadership texts, is "to grow the total soldier" - to feed the mind, the heart, and the spirit." "Neuschel adopted and tailored this philosophy throughout his subsequent long and successful corporate and academic careers. He proved than enabling people at all levels to grow as leaders can only benefit them and the organizations to which they belong." "In the past several decades, Neuschel became concerned with corporate leaders' preoccupation with quick shareholder value at the expense of building enduring organizations based on ethical values. In his book he forcefully outlines how leaders must take personal responsibility for all their decisions and actions."
