Research questions were formulated to investigate those relationships between principal’s leadership style and an educator's stress and morale. Results show that leadership style can impact both stress and morale in a variety of ways and degrees.

Book excerpt: This study examined the degree of principal leadership style's effect on teacher morale in 14 public schools in northern New Jersey with a total of 138 participants. Of the 14 participating schools, 10 schools were categorized as elementary level, serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Four schools were categorized as high school level, serving students in ninth through twelfth grade. Factors guiding research included teachers' consecutive years of educational service, high-stakes testing subject areas, and a school's socioeconomic status to determine if they contribute to the relationship of principal leadership and teacher morale. Morale levels of teachers were calibrated using the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO) and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). The PTO measured factors affecting teacher morale. The LPI measured staff perceptions of principal effectiveness in relation to the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). The study was quantitative in nature and employed a correlational research study design technique. Survey responses were analyzed using an Independent Sample t Test to measure relationship strength. Outcomes identified from this research will contribute positively to the greater educational setting, whether through contributing to leadership training for future principals, informing professional development for seasoned vesteds, or aiding in the creation of future teaching tools. Study results indicate that teachers involved in high-stakes testing and teachers working in the lowest socioeconomic educational environments felt significantly different than teachers not exposed to these factors. This research exposes pertinent leadership characteristics that may prove vital to the development of current and future school leaders and aid the development of specific professional development opportunities. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to construct a theoretical framework explaining the connection between principal leadership practices and the phenomenon of teacher morale. The study also focused on principal leadership practices and the perceived effects that style has on how teachers feel about themselves and their jobs. First, a review of extant literature defined what constitutes effective leadership in school related environments. Second, the researcher defined teacher morale, both high and low, and how it relates to work performance. Third, the researcher attempted to explore how teacher morale and the leadership style of their principals relate. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of teachers from 7 public elementary schools. Post interview journaling was also conducted by the researcher to capture immediate author perspective. The teachers were interviewed to gain their perceptions of leadership practices that motivate them to enjoy their jobs and work beyond status quo. With information gleaned from teachers, the desired outcome of this research was for principals to self-evaluate their leadership strategies and style and to find importance in building high teacher morale for the betterment of everyone. The researcher coded transcripts into themes, patterns, and the following theoretical constructs: (a) change, (b) leadership practices, (c) mandated testing, (d) stress, (e) communication, (f) acknowledgment, (g) professionalism (h) identifying with teachers, and (i) building community.

The study attempted to answer the question: "What strategies could a principal use to improve staff morale." This study provides an overview of literature on the factors that create low staff morale, why teacher morale is important, the link between teacher attrition and morale, classified staff morale and styles of effective administrative leadership that may affect staff morale. Effective leadership can have a positive effect on staff morale. A principal's . essential role is to set the tone for the school and model professional collaboration for the staff. Administrators can lessen the stress that teachers and staff face daily through creating a supportive work environment in a well-organized school where clear expectations and policies are in place. Healthy staff morale is more likely to be present when the school culture is based on school wide involvement for all staff. The principal cannot do the job alone, there needs to be commitment and collegiality among all staff. The findings in this study showed that workload, job stress, workplace conditions, and student behavior negatively impacted staff morale. The researcher concluded that the principal could positively impact staff morale by placing an emphasis on positive recognition, collaboration and teaming, more involvement in decision making, improved communication between administration and staff, school climate building within the school and with the community, and teacher commitment to positive school change.

Through research on the effects and implications of the roles of school principal’s impact on trust, morale, cooperation, teacher interdependency, shared decision-making and school vision, a multiyear intervention plan and timeline can be used to alter teaching, learning, and leadership conditions which can lead to increased student performance.

The topic of stress is one that has been ongoing for hundreds of years but the teaching profession has seen an increase in this condition over the past four decades. Teacher stress and burnout is a condition that can impact teacher health, job retention, teaching performance, and beyond. Therefore, this topic is important as the findings could serve to help minimize this condition. It could also inform educational leaders about leadership styles and their relation to stress and burnout. Sosik and Godshalk's (2000) model of leadership style, mentoring functions received, and job related stress, was the theoretical framework that guided this study. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation was used to analyze statistical data via the Maslach Burnout Inventory: Educator's Survey (MBI) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire - Form 5X - Rater Form (MLQ). The results of this study revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between the leadership styles of elementary school principals and teacher stress and burnout, which aligned with the majority of the literature on this topic.
