Download or read book The Relationship of Sixth grade Students Fitness Scores and Their Math Achievement written by Adam Phaiah and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the relationship between physical fitness and math achievement among sixth-grade students. The study was conducted in an urban school district in Connecticut with 243 (127 females, 116 males) sixth-grade students. The study analyzed the physical fitness of the students with the sit-up, push-up, sit-and-reach tests, and the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test to determine a relationship between math achievement and physical fitness. A multiple linear regression test, and a series of Pearson correlation tests were used to determine a statistical significance between students' fitness levels and their math achievement. The conducted study concluded that female students had a stronger relationship with their physical fitness and their math achievement when compared to males, but that overall there is a positive relationship for both genders between students' physical fitness and their math achievement.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the fitness levels of sixth grade students as measured by the Cooper Fitness Gram and compare those findings with academic achievement as measured by the Northwest Evaluation Association Measure of Academic Progress. Results showed that on five of six fitness tests there were no significant differences between fit and unfit students. Students with higher endurance run scores did, however, score significantly higher in math and reading than did students with lower endurance run scores. Fit females scored higher than unfit females, whereas fit males did not have higher math or reading scores than unfit males. Although the results of this study did not prove causation they did show a strong positive correlation between the cardiovascular fitness of students and their academic achievement.

Book The Effects of Physical Activity on Student Achievement in Sixth grade Mathematics

Download or read book The Effects of Physical Activity on Student Achievement in Sixth grade Mathematics written by Patrick P. Snyder and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study was to examine the effects of physical activity on student academic achievement in sixth-grade mathematics. The research was performed on fourteen sixth grade students enrolled at Buford Garner Elementary School in North Liberty, Iowa. The fourteen students were split into two groups, each containing seven students of similar academic performance levels. The treatment group of participants was assigned an individual daily five-minute interval of aerobic exercise (waling, jogging, or a combination of the two) during the school day, outside of mathematical instructional time. The comparative group of students received the same core and differentiated instruction as the treatment group, but lacked the extra five-minute interval of daily aerobic exercise. Research participants were evaluated on their academic performances during the instruction of two math units. Students were given pre assessments, post assessments and teacher-made student surveys intended to indicate confidence and comfort level with the concepts taught. Over an eight-week period of collecting and analyzing student performances on assessments and surveys, data showed a positive correlation linking increased physical activity to increase achievement in the area of mathematics.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book A Comparison of Sixth grade English Language Arts and Mathematics Achievement Between Middle Schools and K 8 Schools

Download or read book A Comparison of Sixth grade English Language Arts and Mathematics Achievement Between Middle Schools and K 8 Schools written by Brennan W. Asplen (III) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the academic achievement of sixth grade students enrolled in a traditional middle school model versus those enrolled in a K-8 school model by analyzing English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics scores. Developmental Scale Score (DSS) data from the 2017 Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) were collected from three K-8 schools and three middle schools in one high-performing Florida school district. Results from an independent samples t-test revealed that middle school student scores were slightly higher in overall ELA and mathematics proficiency, but the differences were not substantive. Cross-tabulation was utilized to compute the proportion of students making learning gains in ELA and mathematics. The results were nearly identical among the middle school students and the K-8 students relative to ELA; however, the proportion of students making learning gains in mathematics was substantially higher among the K-8 students. To investigate equity in the distribution of achievement, a comparison was made between Middle School and K-8 bi-serial correlation coefficients measuring the strength and direction of the relationship between student achievement and socioeconomic status (SES). Results suggested that the negative influence of low-SES on academic achievement in ELA and mathematics was notably stronger among students enrolled in the middle school model. While making school construction decisions, policy makers will be informed through these findings as to which type of grade span configuration is most likely to positively impact student achievement.

Book Principles and Practices of Performance Assessment

Download or read book Principles and Practices of Performance Assessment written by Nidhi Khattri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the recent national trend toward adoption of performance assessments. Embraced at all levels of educational decision-making--state, district, school, and teacher--the shapes these assessments take and the affects they have at the classroom level can differ significantly from one setting to another. Based on case studies of 16 schools, this study describes what performance assessments actually look like--the types of tasks they pose to children, the scoring methods used, the purposes to which they are put, and how they fit in with other components of assessment systems. It also shows how they differ when they are introduced by state departments of education, districts, and schools themselves. Factors that affect policymakers' and educators' abilities to successfully design and introduce performance assessments are also explored. These include the purposeful coordination of performance assessment with related education reforms, such as the adoption of content and student performance standards, and the professional development for teachers necessary to the successful implementation of performance assessments. Barriers to adoption, most notably the challenges of developing a technically sound performance assessment, are discussed as well. Crucial to teachers' ability to appropriate performance assessments for use in their own classrooms is their invovlement in designing and implementing them. Although it would be impossible for a state or school district to involve all teachers in the design of a performance assessment, they can take steps to foster teachers' understanding of the purposes and methods of the assessment, thereby supporting their ability to use similar methods in their daily teaching. Toward that end, this book describes the experiences of teachers and students with a range of assessments that all fall under the umbrella of performance assessment. In addition, it provides: *rich illustrations of those experiences across a diverse group of schools; *descriptions of the trade-offs inherent in developing a student assessment system; *demonstrations of why no single assessment can be "all things to all people;" and *valuable insights for teachers, administrators, policymakers, and researchers who want to improve their understanding of how performance assessments work in practice and how they may best serve to improve teaching and learning.

Book Relationships Between Levels of Fitness Body Size and Academic Achievement in Fourth Grade Urban Students

Download or read book Relationships Between Levels of Fitness Body Size and Academic Achievement in Fourth Grade Urban Students written by David J. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there were relationships between levels of fitness, body size based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and academic achievement in urban fourth-grade students. Subjects consisted of 877 ethnically diverse fourth-grade students enrolled in one of 14 elementary schools from two districts in a northeastern state. The researcher investigated state physical fitness assessments, body mass index, and standardized state mastery tests in mathematics and reading to analyze existing relationships. Fitness scores were analyzed through the use of raw scores as well as health-related fitness zones, while academic mastery test scores were divided into five categories, as well as raw scores. When fitness data were analyzed there appeared to be a strong relationship to academic achievement. The analyses of both mathematics and reading scores results showed that as the percentage of fitness tests passed increased, so did scores. More specifically, students who passed more than two-thirds of the tests scored significantly higher on both mathematics and reading. Most of the analyses used were analyses of variance (ANOVA) and subsequent post-hoc tests to examine differences in academic performance based on the percent of fitness tests passed. In addition, multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relative contribution of each fitness component to the mathematics and reading scores. Based on these results, one could conclude that the relationship between academic achievement and levels of physical fitness is of extreme importance. According to the results of this study, advocating the promotion of both physical activity and physical education programs as a way of increasing academic achievement in students is justified. As the pressure on public schools continues to rise to improve academic achievement and meet the demands placed on them by current legislation, all too often cuts are being made to physical education programs and time spent on improving the health, wellness, and fitness levels of our students. As students continue to become unfit and overweight, understanding the relationship that this has on academic achievement is critical.
