Download or read book Body Image Social Influences Ethnic Differences and Impact on Self esteem written by Rafael Vargas and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between self-esteem and body image has been well-established such that low levels of self-esteem have been found to be associated with body image concerns. The authors review previous research on the link between low self-esteem and body image concerns and then discuss more recent research concerning the importance of contingent self-esteem in this connection. The next chapter provides a discussion on the commonness of body dissatisfaction among contemporary Western young women and suggests re-embodiment as a means of transforming this experience. Chapter 3 explores the relationship between appearance satisfaction emotional overeating, experiences of racism and BMI among Black and African American women. Ethnic identity plays an important role in the self-concept related to feelings and attitudes. Chapter 4 explores the ethnic differences in self-esteem and body image among adolescents, as well as the need to address ethnicity in prevention programs. The remaining chapters of the book focus on body image in adolescent pregnancy; magazine image influence, extraversion and body image in college males; sociocultural factors, body image factors and self-esteem on school-age males and females, the perception of self-image in older people and how it changes throughout life; an examination of how the way woman perceive themselves influences the psychosexual impact on quality of life; and finally, how people can improve or develop a healthier investment in appearance.

Book excerpt: Body Image: Understanding Body Dissatisfaction in Men, Women and Children presents a review of what is presently known and the results of some new research on body image. It compares the effects of gender, sexuality, social class, age and ethnicity on satisfaction with the way we look and suggests how these differences arise. Why, for instance, are heterosexual men much happier with their body images than women or gay men? Sarah Grogan discusses the effect of media presentation of the ideal body and other cultural influences. Surprisingly, despite the almost exclusive media preference for very young female bodies, she finds that older women are not less satisfied with their bodies than younger women. Written for readers from a variety of disciplines, this clear and eclectic book will make the ideal text for students from psychology, sociology, gender and media studies.

Book Female Body Image and Self Perception

Download or read book Female Body Image and Self Perception written by Lena Koya and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Societal norms have placed large burdens on how women perceive themselves, and how they want others to perceive them. This has led to some distressing statistics, with up to 10 percent of college-aged women in the United States suffering from an eating disorder. While individual women can focus on cultivating a healthy body image, it is important for young women to analyze how the media and others encourage unhealthy perceptions of what women's bodies are supposed to look like. A glossary, a For More Information section, and additional avenues of research are provided to guide readers to better understand the importance of a healthy female body image.

Book The Relationship Between Source of Self esteem and Body Composition in College Women

Download or read book The Relationship Between Source of Self esteem and Body Composition in College Women written by Breckann Faun Moncur and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between achievement self-esteem, self acceptance self-esteem and body composition in college women. Methods: One-hundred and fifty eight college women were recruited to participate in the study. Participants were healthy, between the age of 18 and 25 yrs, not taking medication that would alter metabolism, and able to participate in physical activity without restriction. As part of the study the participants filled out the Worth Index, which measured level of self-acceptance and achievement self-esteem. The questionnaire included four subscales: basic human worth, performance factor, personal security and appearance. Body composition was assessed using the BOD POD. Results: Participants in the study were 19.9 ± 1.7 yrs, had a BMI of 22.5 ± 3.2 kg/m2 and a percent body fat of 26.4 ± 6.4. Source of self-esteem was primarily self-acceptance self-esteem with participants on average scoring 65 ± 11 out of 84 (high moderate) compared to an achievement self-esteem score of 35 ± 10 out of 84 (low moderate). When evaluating the subscales a similar trend appears with the exception of the performance factor, which was more normally distributed. Achievement self-esteem in appearance was positively correlated to percent body fat (p

Book Fit is the New Thin

Download or read book Fit is the New Thin written by Diana E. Bizjak and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between fitspiration use and body satisfaction in college age women. As a quantitative exploratory study, a sample of 25 people participated in a survey, answering nominal questions about their fitspiration use, exercise habits, and attitudes toward exercise, dieting behaviors, body image, and self- esteem. A non-probability convenience sample was used. Participants reported various different attitudes toward exercise and their bodies. Using chi-square tests, the study found that there is no evidence to suggest that the regular viewing of fitspiration has a detrimental effect on body satisfaction in college age women, but that college age women remain vulnerable to negative body image. This study demonstrates the need for further research into the topic of fitspiration as well as the need for social workers to fully understand the challenges to health and wellness their clients may face. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.

Book Differences in Body Satisfaction and Self Esteem in White Black Hispanic and Asian Females at a Small College

Download or read book Differences in Body Satisfaction and Self Esteem in White Black Hispanic and Asian Females at a Small College written by Lisa L. Moretti and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor body image and low self-esteem have been accepted as factors increasing the risk of the development of eating disorders in women. For decades research was conducted with populations of mostly White women focusing little on other races. The recent attention to ethnic differences in body image and self-esteem have not provided consistent results. With the shift in the definition of beauty in the United States that is more inclusive of differing ethnicities and body shapes prior conclusions may be invalidated. This study examined the self-esteem and body perception of Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian women at a small college. A relationship was found between self-esteem and body satisfaction independent of ethnicity. Black women were found to have the highest self-esteem and to be more satisfied with their bodies than any other group yet their mean body mass index is considered to be overweight.

Book Hot Or Not

Book excerpt: Everyone looks in the mirror at some point in their lives, and they do not feel fully satisfied with what they see. Maybe it is their weight or their hair color or perhaps their height—there is always something that “needs” to be changed. College-age women seem especially impacted by negative body image perceptions. Research shows that this desire to look like and be something different is often brought on from societal pressures, social media and familial opinions and comments. The existing research often looks at why women are dissatisfied with their looks but not routinely at what specific impacts this dissatisfaction has on their daily lives. This study looked at the body image perceptions of 65 female college students from a private, southwestern university to see how they felt their body image has impacted various areas of their lives. A survey that utilized open- ended questions sought to gain a better and more descriptive understanding of how college women truly feel about their body image. The resulting qualitative data was analyzed, and results showed that negative body image impacted the respondents’ self- esteem and self-perception. Results also showed that these negative body perceptions had a major impact on how the participants function in their social and daily lives. A full review of this study’s findings in relation to the existing literature will be discussed.

Book Perceived Body Image

Download or read book Perceived Body Image written by Michelle Marie Norder-Pietrzak and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined physical self-esteem in 302 college age females with special attention to the perceived physical appearance subdomain. Further investigation addressed body image and nutritional and exercise practices which contribute to perceived physical appearance and consequently physical self-esteem. Instruments used for data collection included the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), the Perceived Importance Profile (PIP), modified Body Silhouette Drawings (BSD), a Physical Activity Inventory (PAl), and a Exercise/Nutrition Trend Questionnaire. The results supported previous findings that women perceive physical appearance as the most important subdomain affecting physical self-esteem. Health and fitness related education positively affected perceived physical self-esteem and perceived importance as shown by the changes in the subscale weightings on the PSPP and PIP. Women ages 18 to 25 years viewed their current body image as being greater in size then their perceived ideal body image. Appropriate activities were chosen that would positively affect physical appearance, but a significant decrease in activity levels was confirmed for women as they age (G2 and G3, increase, t = .90, P 5 .05; G3 and G4, decrease, t = .70, P 5 .05). Women in this study engaged in unhealthy lifestyle practices that could have a negative effect on physical appearance and be detrimental to their health, consequently decreasing their physical self-esteem.
