Book The Relationship of Religiosity Spirituality and High risk Sexual and Related Behaviors Among Black Men who Have Sex with Men black MSM

Download or read book The Relationship of Religiosity Spirituality and High risk Sexual and Related Behaviors Among Black Men who Have Sex with Men black MSM written by Tommie Lee Watkins and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and spirituality are important concepts for many Black MSM. While many social factors may be associated with the increasing disparity of HIV infection among Black MSM, high levels of religiosity and spirituality prevalent in Black culture may be correlated with high risk behavior among Black MSM and may help explain this population's increasing incidence of HIV infection. Research supports a relationship between religiosity, spirituality, and high risk behavior among populations. Some research has suggested that religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM may be correlated but are multifaceted constructs. Conclusions suggest that among Black MSM these constructs account for certain levels of cognitive dissonance among Black MSM addressing their sexual and religious identity and can lead to negative coping behaviors and negative health outcomes (e.g., higher sexual risk, higher substance abuse, and higher levels of depression) among Black MSM. Findings also suggest positive spiritual and religious experiences may reduce the level of dissonance experienced by some Black MSM and may lead to positive health outcomes. Despite the unique role of religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM, research has not examined the relationships of these constructs and high sexual risk behavior among Black MSM. Future effective HIV prevention interventions intended for Black MSM may well include dissonance reduction, as well as, spirituality and religiosity components to achieve risk reduction interventions that may well decrease the continued HIV incidence among Black MSM.

Book Religiosity Ethnic Identity and Risky Sexual Behavior in an African American Church affiliated Population

Download or read book Religiosity Ethnic Identity and Risky Sexual Behavior in an African American Church affiliated Population written by Starlyn Montez Hawes and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in the US. The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, ethnic identity, and sexual risk behaviors among 202 sexually active African American church-affiliated participants (mean age = 25; 69% female). Participants were fairly religious as evidenced by their reports of weekly engagement of scripture reading and daily engagement in thoughts of God and prayer. Participants spent quite a bit to a great deal of time utilizing positive religious coping and little to no time utilizing negative religious coping. In addition, participant's God control beliefs moderately influenced their choices related to engagement in sex. Participants reported moderate levels of ethnic identity exploration and commitment. On average, participants reported 10 lifetime sex partners and two within the past six months. Age was significantly predictive of lifetime sexual checklist factors (i.e., having sex while high on drugs or alcohol, being a victim of domestic violence, having sex with someone who has been in the correctional system) and previous six month and lifetime sex-only factors (i.e., number of sex partners, condom use). None of the primary study predictors (i.e., religious beliefs and behaviors, religious coping, God control beliefs, ethnic identity) were significantly associated with risky sexual behaviors.

Book Religiosity and Risky Sexual Behaviors in an African American Church Population

Download or read book Religiosity and Risky Sexual Behaviors in an African American Church Population written by Starlyn Montez Hawes and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in the US. The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, and sexual risk behaviors among 255 sexually active African American church-based participants (mean age = 43; 69% female). Participants were highly religious as evidenced by their report of daily prayer and thoughts of God and twice weekly church attendance and direct experiences with God. Most inconsistently used condoms (85%), and on average participants had seven sex partners in their lifetime. Gender, average monthly income, and medical insurance significantly predicted lifetime HIV-related risk factors (e.g., sex under the influence of substances, trading sex for drugs, homelessness, incarceration). Age and marital status significantly predicted lifetime sex-only behaviors (e.g., number of sex partners, condom use). Also, God consciousness (e.g., religious belief and prayer) significantly predicted sex-only behaviors. Overall, demographic variables were strong predictors of sexual risk behaviors.

Book Religion Life and Death

Download or read book Religion Life and Death written by Pamela Leong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a content analysis of writing assignments from a class on death and dying, this book focuses on the manner in which college students use religion to make sense of death and the dying process. Drawing on research spanning five years, the author considers the attitudes, concerns, and beliefs about death, exploring students’ perspectives on the place of religion in end-of-life issues. With attention to questions related to death anxiety, suicide, mass homicide, and the death of young children, the author examines the ways in which students draw on religion to make sense of death, religion’s function as both a source of comfort and empowerment and a source of distress, as well as the perceptions of those who resist religion. As such, Religion, Life, and Death will appeal to social scientists with interests in the sociology of young adults, and the sociology and psychology of religion, death, and dying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, David Hernandez, a small-time drug-dealer in Spanish Harlem, got out of the drug business and turned his life over to God. After he joined Victory Chapel-a vibrant Bronx-based Pentecostal church-he saw his life change in many ways: today he is a member of the NYPD, married, the father of three, and still an active member of his church. David Hernandez is just one of the many individuals whose stories inform Soul Mates, which draws on both national surveys and in-depth interviews to paint a detailed portrait of the largely positive influence exercised by churches on relationships and marriage among African Americans and Latinos-and whites as well. Soul Mates shines a much-needed spotlight on the lives of strong and happy minority couples. Wilcox and Wolfinger find that both married and unmarried minority couples who attend church together are significantly more likely to enjoy happy relationships than black and Latino couples who do not regularly attend. They argue that churches serving these communities promote a code of decency encompassing hard work, temperance, and personal responsibility that benefits black and Latino families. Wilcox and Wolfinger provide a compelling look at faith and family life among blacks and Latinos. The book offers a wealth of critical insight into the effect of religion on minority relationships, as well as the unique economic and cultural challenges facing African American and Latino families in twenty-first-century America.

Book Sexual Abuse of Power in the Black Church

Download or read book Sexual Abuse of Power in the Black Church written by Donald H. Matthews PhD and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals specifically with the topic of the sexual abuse of power in black churches. This problem has been estimated to be three times as prevalent in the black churches, yet scant attention has been brought to bear on this subject. This book is meant to provide a framework for understanding the problem for the purpose of preventing its occurrence in the context of the black church. It examines the history of sexual ethics in the black community as a means of understanding its deep-seated place in the life of the black churches. The book uses the narratives of black women and children who have been the primary victims of this abuse. It identifies the major social and psychological reasons why and how this abuse develops and continues. It is directed to pastors and leaders of the church who wish to put an end to this injustice that is largely born of ignorance and the adoption of a sexual ethic that is derived from slavery and it effects.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health written by Esther D. Rothblum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of research on the mental health of sexual minorities-defined as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or same-gender attracted; as well as the mental health of gender minorities-defined as individuals who do not fully identify with their sex assigned at birth, including people who are transgender or gender non-binary. The twenty-first century has seen encouraging improvements in sampling, methods, and funding opportunities for research with sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations; nevertheless, a key purpose of this Handbook is to identify lingering gaps in research in order to motivate future scientists to expand knowledge about SGM mental health. The volume begins with a historical overview, followed by sections on mental health categories/diagnoses (such as anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and suicide) and specific sexual and gender minority populations (including examinations of diverse ethnicities and orientations/identities). The handbook concludes with chapters on stigma, the role of resilience, and future directions for research with SGM groups. The volume is aimed at researchers conducting studies on the mental health of SGM populations, clinicians and researchers interested in psychiatric disorders that affect SGM populations, clinicians using evidence-based practice in the treatment of SGM patients/clients, students in mental health programs (clinical psychology, psychiatry, clinical social work, and psychiatric nursing), and policy makers.

Book Exploring the Role that Religiosity And or Spirituality Plays in the Appraisal and Coping Processes of Low income African American Adolescent Males who Have Been Exposed to Community Violence

Download or read book Exploring the Role that Religiosity And or Spirituality Plays in the Appraisal and Coping Processes of Low income African American Adolescent Males who Have Been Exposed to Community Violence written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community violence exposure comes in many forms—including direct exposure, indirect witnessing and hearing stories shared among the community. This dissertation is a study that raises questions about the level of exposure to community violence experienced—specifically, among low-income, urban, African American, adolescent males within the United States. Numerous stressors impact the lives African American males, especially those who are living in communities that have high levels of violence. Interventions provided in schools and in community agencies (e.g., recreational facilities) may provide some form of respite from community violence. However, gang activity, aggression, decreased academic performance and concerns with conduct are salient within African American sub-culture, despite best efforts within the community. The exploration of resilience factors that may moderate the impact of violence exposure on African American youth, has received far less research attention. Knowledge of factors that promote adaptation among Black, urban youth is necessary for the targeting of those at risk for negative behavioral and psychological sequelae as a result of their exposure to violence. Two, well-known components of African American culture and identity—spirituality and religiosity—have operated as individual and collective sources of refuge, purpose, forgiveness, hope, and liberation. As a result, a way to possibly address the epidemic of adolescent, African American exposure to community violence is through focused exploration of the role spirituality and religiosity could potentially serve in African American communities. To capture often-unheard thoughts and feelings of young, African American men and the unique challenges they face in their particular sociocultural environment, the study sampled seven, adolescent, African American males between the ages of 14 and 16 who were from a large, Midwestern city. The results supported the notion that African American, male adolescents frequently experience pervasive, negative exposure to violence within their communities, which can impact building and maintaining interpersonal relationships and personal self-efficacy. As a result, a sense of safety is a critically essential component required for change to occur in these communities. These findings do not intend to generalize across all adolescent, African American male experiences, but rather provide a richer understanding of the participant’s lived experienced.

Book What it Means to be a Man

Download or read book What it Means to be a Man written by Jessica Lynette Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIV/AIDS is a growing concern in the African American community. From 2005 to 2008, there was a 12% increase in HIV/AIDS diagnoses among African Americans (CDC, 2010a). African American males have higher rates of HIV/AIDS diagnoses than any other ethnic or racial groups. In 2006, 65% of the HIV/AIDS cases among African Americans were from adult males (CDC, 2010a). These higher rates are in part attributed to higher levels of sexual risk-taking including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, and sex with high-risk partners. African American adult men get tested at almost the same rate (52%) as African American women 53% (CDC, 2007). HIV testing is important to the prevention of HIV/AIDS and can result in substantial reductions in risk behaviors (Marks, Crepaz, & Janssen, 2006; Weinhardt, Carey, Johnson, & Bickham, 1999). Masculinity, a man's concept of what it means to be man, influences engagement in sexual risk-taking behaviors (Bowleg, 2004, Duck, 2009; Lichtenstein, 2004), as well as health-seeking behaviors (Hammond, Matthews, Mohottige, Agyemang, & Corbie-Smith, 2010; Royster, Richmond, Eng, & Margolis, 2006). One form of masculinity, hypermasculinity is related to sexual risk-taking behaviors, especially among young African American males. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the relationship between hypermasculinity and sexual risk-taking, and HIV testing among African American males. One hundred twenty-six African American male college students were recruited to participate in an HIV prevention intervention for African American women on a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) campus. Prior to participating in the intervention, participants completed a questionnaire with measures of hypermasculinity, sexual behavior, and HIV testing. The results showed that hypermasculinity predicted frequency of sex. Hypermasculinity and frequency of sex predicted lifetime HIV testing. Frequency of sex and the number of sex partners predicted current HIV testing (in the past month). The interaction between hypermasculinity and frequency of sex was marginally significant. The findings from this research may increase our understanding of sexual risk-taking, improve HIV testing initiatives, and be useful in the development of HIV prevention programs for African American heterosexual males.
