Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored elementary principals' perceptions of their roles in students' reading development. Participants were also asked to identify supports and impediments to their perceived roles. Instruments used in this study included a researcher-designed survey, which consisted of selected-response, Likert scale, and open-ended questions. Individual interviews with participants were also conducted. Twenty-nine elementary principals from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania completed the selected-response and Likert scale questions while 25 of the principals completed the open-ended response questions. Four of the 29 elementary principals participated in individual interviews. The results of the study indicate that a principal's roles in students' reading development are multi-faceted and include: ensuring high student achievement and growth by monitoring instructional delivery, facilitating literacy teams and professional learning communities, engaging in data-driven decision making, ensuring that the Pennsylvania Core Standards for College and Career Readiness are satisfied, leading professional development, recruiting and maintaining high quality staffs, providing access to resources, supervising and evaluating teachers, and developing curriculum. In terms of supports for principal's roles, the participants cited their own knowledge of reading development, time to engage in instructional leadership activities related to reading, and familiarity with curriculum and instructional materials. Participants identified several additional supports. Few impediments to the principals' roles were cited; the main impediment was a lack of human and material resources.
