Book excerpt: Oil Companies in the International System (1978) provides an original and wide-ranging examination of the impact that the leading oil companies have had on international relations. It looks at the interplay between the oil companies and the governments of both the industrialised and oil-producing countries and asks to what extent the former have been beyond the control of these authorities. It pays particular attention to the oil industry’s relations with the consuming countries, and considers the oil companies’ importance in international politics.

Book The Politics of Oil in Indonesia

Download or read book The Politics of Oil in Indonesia written by Khong Cho Oon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-07-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between foreign companies and government within the Indonesian oil industry. It is concerned in particular to identify those factors which determine the balance between central regulation and untrammelled company activity, in order to evaluate the choices which the government has to make in the creation of its policies. Given the extent of foreign investment in the mineral extractive industries of many of the less-developed countries, such policies are of major importance. From his study of the operation of Indonesian oil contracts, Dr Khong concludes that the formal terms of an agreement may well give a misleading impression of the actual allocation of the benefits from petroleum extraction. The common perception that a basic shift in favour of host governments has occurred is shown to be largely misplaced, whatever relative advances they may have achieved.

Book Ownership and Control of Oil

Download or read book Ownership and Control of Oil written by Bianca Sarbu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ownership and Control of Oil examines government decisions about how much control to exert over the petroleum industry, focusing on the role of National Oil Companies in the production of crude oil since the nationalizations in the 1970s. What are the motives for which some producing states opt for less and NOT more control of their oil production sector? When can International Oil Companies enter the upstream industry of producing states and under what conditions? The diversity of policy choices across producers provides the stage for this investigation: different theoretical explanations are confronted, with the empirical evidence, with the aim of finally proposing an interdisciplinary framework of analysis to explain who controls oil production around the world. This book is intended for both specialists and general readers who have an interest in the issue of government control of the petroleum industry. Due to its multidisciplinary approach, the book is aimed at a large academic public composed of scholars of Political Science, International Political Economy, Comparative Politics, and Middle East Area Studies. Moreover, this book should be relevant to international consultants, industry professionals and decision-makers in countries assessing their experience with existing control structures as well as the many countries in the process of joining the ‘petroleum club’ of oil producing nations.

Book The Oil Companies and the Arab World

Download or read book The Oil Companies and the Arab World written by Giacomo Luciani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, vertical integration characterized the international oil industry, with the same company controlling the entire process from crude exploration and production to the retailing. This structure was radically transformed in the 1970s and this book, originally published in 1984, examines whether the dis-integration which resulted was a long-term trend or a temporary phase. It examines the attitude of the major international oil companies, discusses the policies adopted by oil producing and oil importing countries, and the limits of ‘government to government’ deals underlined. The political and strategic implications of re-integration are explored, and relations between oil exporters and importers, and between the USA, Europe and the Arab world discussed.
