The purpose of this study was to explore the impact role conflict and role ambiguity had on job satisfaction among school counselors at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as all levels combined. The impact the percentage of time spent on the American School Counselor Association recommended functions of school counselors (counseling, guidance, consultation, and coordination) (ASCA, 1990) and the percentage of time spent on other duties not falling under the ASCA areas had on job satisfaction was also explored. The Role Conflict and Role Ambiguity Scale and the Job Descriptive Index were administered to 590 school counselors. Role conflict and role ambiguity, as well as the percentage of time spent on counseling, large group guidance, consultation, coordination, and other duties, were all significant predictors of job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine the predictive value of the level of implementation of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, several demographic variables, perceived job satisfaction, perceived job stress, coping styles and responses, level of role ambiguity, and level of role conflict on school counselors’ level of burnout (research question one). Additionally, the purpose of this study was to determine the impact of several demographic and environmental factors to explain the variance in the ASCA National Model implementation in different school settings (research question two). A demographic survey and several instrumentations were used to investigate the research questions. Participants completed the instrumentations in Qualtrics. The participants were 208 school counselors working full-time with at least one year of experience as a school counselor and a member of the ASCA. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted for the research questions. Results of research question one showed perceived job stress, level of role conflict, perceived job satisfaction, level of role ambiguity, and the amount of time engaged in consultation monthly accounted for 62.0% of the variance in level of burnout for school counselors. Results of research question two revealed the percentage of non-counseling duties school counselors engaged in weekly and level of role ambiguity accounted for 35.3% of the variance in level of implementation of the ASCA National Model. A discussion of the results, implications, limitations of the study, and recommendations for future research were presented in relation to the present study.

Book excerpt: Despite the development of the American School Counseling Association's National Standards for school counseling programs, the school counseling profession continues to struggle with role ambiguity and role conflict. In an effort to gain additional information regarding the school counselors' role, this study employed a research survey design to examine the principals' and counselors' perceptions of the school counselors' role and to investigate the similarities and differences between those perceptions. A purposeful sample of 141 public school principals and 149 counselors from elementary and secondary schools located within Region 4 in southeast Texas were solicited to complete a modified version of the School Counselor Activity Rating Scale (SCARS) (Scarborough, 2005). The researcher analyzed the data obtained from the SCARS by calculating frequency distributions and percentages for each statement of the SCARS to determine which activities were perceived by principals and counselors as most and least important. The findings of this study indicate the majority of principals and counselors have similar perceptions on 35 of the activities and differing perceptions on 15 of the activities measured on the SCARS.
