Book The Effect of Breathing High Concentrations of Oxygen on Treadmill Performance and Selected Physiological Variables

Download or read book The Effect of Breathing High Concentrations of Oxygen on Treadmill Performance and Selected Physiological Variables written by David A. Cunningham and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the purpose of this study to investigate the effects of breathing high concentrations of oxygen (70-73 percent oxygen in nitrogen) on treadmill performance and on the exercise and post-exercise pulse rate and the relationship between excess lactic acid production and oxygen debt. Seven relatively fit students and faculty members of the University of Alberta served as subjects for this experiment. The subjects participated in repeated tests for both the oxygen and air trials. Each subject underwent a preliminary maximal oxygen intake test to determine the treadmill grade at which he reached his maximal oxygen intake. The subsequent maximal performance trials were run at this predetermined treadmill grade. During each maximal performance trial the following information was recorded: time to reach exhaustion; pre-exercise, exercise and post-exercise heart rate; pre-exercise and post-exercise oxygen intake; and lactic and pyruvic acid levels. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in treadmill performance time for the oxygen trials as compared to the air trials. The oxygen debt was significantly reduced for the first minute of recovery for the oxygen trials, despite the significantly longer performance time. There was no difference in the oxygen debt between the oxygen and air trials after the first minute of recovery. The oxygen debts of both trials appioached an asymptote by the eighth minute of recovery. Little difference was observed between the recovery levels of pyruvic- acid after the air and oxygen trials. The lactic acid levels were observed to be lower after the oxygen trials as compared to the air trials. The mean peak values of excess lactic acid found during the third minute of recovery was significantly lowered by the breathing of high concentrations of oxygen during an exhaustion run on the treadmill. This was evident even though the mean performance time while breathing oxygen was significantly longer. A relationship was observed after the third minute of recovery between excess lactic acid and oxygen debt but not between the lactic acid and oxygen debt. Breathing high concentrations of oxygen during the maximal performance did not alter the apparent relationship between excess lactic acid and oxygen debt or the apparent lack of relationship between lactic acid and oxygen debt• The relationship between excess lactic acid and oxygen debt did not appear to be a one to one relationship. The increase in excess lactic acid during the eight minutes of recovery was greater than the increase in oxygen debt.

Book Advances in Ergometry

Download or read book Advances in Ergometry written by Norbert Bachl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercise testing is widely used all over the world to assess functional capacity in athletes, healthy subjects and patients. According to recent surveys, the interest in ergometry is still growing in almost all fields of medicine, especially in private practice. Furthermore, there has been an exponential growth in the number of publications on exercise testing in the last years. Several consensus and task force conferences have dealt with exercise testing and published recommendations on standardization and guidelines in ergometry. These factors have, in combination, initiated an upsurge in research and clinical use of exercise testing. At the 6th International Seminar on Ergometry the latest findings and advances in ergometry were discussed. Reviews and results of the congress covering a wide range of features in exercise testing are presented in this book. The editors hope that this book will make a substantial contribution to our knowledge regarding exercise testing and will help physicians to appropriately evaluate exercise testing in healthy and diseased subjects. The editors are indepted to Miss I. Baumgartner and Mr. W. Reith for their effort in typing and preparing the manuscripts. The editors are greatful to Springer-Verlag for the close cooperation and for their expertise in publishing the present volume. N. Bachl T. Graham H. Lallgen Contents W. Book Energetics of Muscular Exercise

Download or read book Energetics of Muscular Exercise written by Guido Ferretti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the maximal power and capacity of the three major biochemical pathways - aerobic (oxygen consumption), anaerobic lactic (muscle lactate accumulation in absence of oxygen consumption), and anaerobic alactic (phosphocreatine hydrolysis) metabolism - as well as the factors that limit them. It also discusses the metabolic and cardio-pulmonary mechanisms of the dynamic response to exercise. The way and extent to which the power and capacity of the three major energy metabolisms are affected under a number of different conditions, such as training, hypoxia and microgravity, are also described.
