Book The Relationship Between Faith based Support and Physical Activity Levels Among African American Women in Faith Communities

Download or read book The Relationship Between Faith based Support and Physical Activity Levels Among African American Women in Faith Communities written by Sharon Taylor Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for death worldwide, and is a major contributor for a number of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cancer in the United States (CDC, 2014; World Health Organization, 2010). This public health problem is more prevalent among African American women who have been diagnosed with chronic health conditions and live sedentary lifestyles. Therefore, identifying strategies that contribute to improving physical activity levels are warranted for this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between participation in faith-based groups and physical activity levels among African American women in faith communities. The Health Promotion Model was used as the theoretical framework to explore how motivational significance of physical and psychosocial variables influence health behavioral outcomes. A descriptive correlational design was conducted using a convenience sample of 115 African American women 21 - 64 years of age. The participants were recruited from eight predominantly African American faith communities located in north-central Texas. Demographics, health conditions, and health promoting physical activity data were collected at baseline. Then participants were instructed to record their faith-based group participation and pedometer readings on a daily tracking record over a 14 consecutive day study period. Data were then collected at the end of the study period. Bivariate analyses using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, revealed a significant association between participation in faith-based groups r(79) = .282, p = .011 and pedometer readings. Correlational findings using the Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient revealed faith-based support approached statistical significance rs(79) = .215, p = .053 with pedometer readings. Education rs(112) = .252, p = .007 and income rs(109) = .285, p = .002 were significantly associated with the health promoting physical activity subscale mean scores of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II questionnaire. Health promoting physical activity scores were significantly and negatively associated rs(115) = -.299, p = .001 with current health conditions. Examining the impact of social and cultural approaches to physical activity participation would contribute to the current body of knowledge, and identify strategies that contribute to improving health promoting physical activity practices. The implications for the study revealed that inadequate progression has been made to improve physical activity levels in African American women, and that future research is warranted for exploring increased physical activity participation and decreased attrition rates in at risk populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Americans enjoyed better overall health than at any other time in the nation's history. Rapid advancements in medical technologies, breakthroughs in understanding the genetic underpinnings of health and ill health, improvements in the effectiveness and variety of pharmaceuticals, and other developments in biomedical research have helped develop cures for many illnesses and improve the lives of those with chronic diseases. By itself, however, biomedical research cannot address the most significant challenges to improving public health. Approximately half of all causes of mortality in the United States are linked to social and behavioral factors such as smoking, diet, alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, and accidents. Yet less than five percent of the money spent annually on U.S. health care is devoted to reducing the risks of these preventable conditions. Behavioral and social interventions offer great promise, but as yet their potential has been relatively poorly tapped. Promoting Health identifies those promising areas of social science and behavioral research that may address public health needs. It includes 12 papersâ€"commissioned from some of the nation's leading expertsâ€"that review these issues in detail, and serves to assess whether the knowledge base of social and behavioral interventions has been useful, or could be useful, in the development of broader public health interventions.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the relationship between individuals' locus of control and their decisions to exercise regularly, eat well, drink moderately, and avoid tobacco. Our primary goal is to assess the relative importance of the alternative pathways that potentially link locus of control to healthy habits. We find that individuals with an internal locus of control are more likely to eat well and exercise regularly. This link cannot be explained by the extent to which they are future-orientated and value their health, however. There are important gender differences in explaining the link between perceptions of control and healthy habits. Men with an internal locus of control expect to have higher health returns to their investments in diet and exercise. In contrast, women with an internal locus of control maintain healthy habits because they derive greater satisfaction from those activities than women with external control tendencies.

Book The Relationship Between Perceived Wellness and Stages of Change for Exercise Among Rural African American Women

Download or read book The Relationship Between Perceived Wellness and Stages of Change for Exercise Among Rural African American Women written by Imani Carolyn Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women in the US, and African American women (AAW) have a disproportionately high rate of deaths from CVD. Physical inactivity plays a major role in CVD development. It has been reported that some rural women have low rates of physical activity; 39% of White women and 57% of women of color are reported to be physically inactive. Rural AAW have a high mortality and morbidity rate related to CVD and a high rate of physical inactivity. The purpose of this study was to describe rural AAW's perception of wellness in conjunction with their stage of change for engaging in exercise. A questionnaire was designed to obtain demographic information and reliable and valid questionnaires were used to measure perceived wellness and current stage of change for exercise. Using a descriptive, cross-sectional design, a convenience sample of 162 rural AAW was recruited from four rural churches in Selma, Alabama. A one-time meeting was conducted and questionnaires were completed by the participants. Statistical analyses including independent samples t-tests and one-way and two-way ANOVAs were conducted to determine if there were associations among demographic characteristics, self-reported presence of CVD, perceived wellness, and stage of change for exercise. Findings indicated that there was no relationship between perceived wellness and stages of change for exercise among rural AAW; no relationship was found between perceived wellness and CVD, or CVD and stage of change for exercise. However, 51.3% of the sample reported they were physically active, and 21.6% planned to increase their activity within 30 days. Annual household income and employment status were positively correlated with perceived wellness, suggesting a greater sense of wellness is related to income and employment among these rural AAW. These findings have implications for nursing practice in the areas of facilitating health promoting behaviors and development of exercise and wellness programs for rural AAW.
