Book excerpt: Research on spirituality at the workplace has gained enormous attention recently as it is found that spirituality is associated with positive work attitude including organizational commitment. However, the relationship between spirituality and organizational commitment has not been widely researched, especially using non~ Western sample and using a measure that is specially developed for Muslims in a Muslim context. Thus, this study is conducted to answer a number of research questions pertaining to the relationship between workplace spirituality and individual spirituality with organizational commitment and whether there is interaction between workplace spirituality and individual spirituality on the development of organizational commitment. Three hypotheses were tested. First, there will be positive relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational commitment. Second, there will be positive relationship between individual spirituality and organizational commitment. Third, there will be interaction effect between workplace spirituality and individual spirituality on organizational commitment Data were collected at the Centre for Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia involving 150 administrators. The Spirituality at Work Scale by Aslunos and Duchon (2000) was used to measure workplace spirituality and the Affective, Continuance and Normative Commitment Scale (ACNCS) by Allen and Meyer (1990) was used to measure organizational commitment. Muslim Religiosity~ Personality Inventory (MRPI) was used for the study to measure individual spirituality. Using correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis the study found positive and significant relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational commitment; there is also significant relationship between individual spirituality and organizational commitment, although the correlation is quite low. The study also provides support for the interaction effect between workplace spirituality and individual spirituality on organizational commitment. The findings of this study is useful for Human Resource managers to understand the significant role of workplace and individual spirituality in the development of organizational commitment and to design appropriate programmes or interventions that will optimize the commitment of the employees.

The conceptual framework in this study linked individual SAW needs and organizational SAW supplies to emerge with a P-O fit model on Spirituality at work. The individual SAW needs, organizational SAW supplies and SAW P-O fit were related to outcomes of Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment. FINDINGS: The distinction between religion and spirituality that forms the basis for defining SAW for scholars did not find support in this study. The 3-way conceptualization of SAW in terms of Integrity/Wholeness, Meaningful work, and Larger than oneself was supported. The influence on outcome variables grew progressively stronger in this order: individual SAW needs, P-O fit on SAW, and organizational SAW supplies. This study provides the first empirical proof of the interactive effects of individual and workplace spirituality on outcomes of interest to organizational scholars.

Book A Study of the Effects of Mediators Between Spirituality at Work and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors

Download or read book A Study of the Effects of Mediators Between Spirituality at Work and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surge of articles seen in the various academic and practitioner journals over the last ten years clearly indicates the growing interest in workplace spirituality (e.g., Manz et al., 2001; Gunther, 2001; Graber, 2001; Brandt, 1996; Thompson, 2000; McCarthy, 1996; Hein, 1999; Herman and Gioia, 1998; Ashmos and Duchon, 2000; Mitroff and Denton, 1999, Bryant, 1998). Despite this growing interest, there has been rather limited theoretical development thus far. There exists no unified explanation to explain for this heightened attention. This study attempts to contribute to the theory development by first conducting a review of the extant literature on spirituality at the workplace to reveal the variety of reasons that have been offered by scholars for this heightened attention. Subsequently, deepened understanding of the phenomenon is derived from tracing its roots through three lenses, namely, the evolution of management thought, economic development, and the assumptions made of man during each time period identified. As such, this study seeks to locate spirituality within the field of organizational research. This study also contributes to the extant literature by looking into workplace spirituality and its relationships between important organizational constructs such as organization-based self esteem (OBSE), organizational commitment (OC), and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). This focus of this exploratory empirical study is to look into how workplace spirituality can lead to the performance of certain desirable behaviors by employees within the organization. This study is particularly interested in looking in to the mediating effects of organization-based self-esteem (OBSE) and organizational commitment (OC) on the relationship between spirituality at work and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Based on the findings of the study, research and managerial implications are derived.

Book Spirituality in the Workplace A Philosophical and Social Justice Perspective

Download or read book Spirituality in the Workplace A Philosophical and Social Justice Perspective written by Marilyn Y. Byrd and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missing from the discourse on spirituality are the injustices experienced in the workplace, particularly by individuals marginalized by social group identity or affiliation. This is a critical omission in that spirituality can stimulate reflection, response, healing, and transformation of the soul. Filling the gap by addressing the role of spirituality in relation to meaningful work, this volume extends ideas about teaching and learning about spirituality to workplace settings, including the transformative learning theory. In seeking ways to promote moral and socially responsible workplaces and to establish a new way of thinking, the volume lays down a philosophical framework for spirituality in the workplace as a means of emancipation and social justice, and shows how the workplace can be a fruitful context for social justice education. This is the 152nd volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Book Spirituality in the Workplace

Download or read book Spirituality in the Workplace written by Stephen J. Broadhurst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we become more and more of a global trading world, the challenges of leading and managing within this turbulent environment and its associated, complex, interconnected markets and disconnected relationships are indisputable, so just how far can any change requirements be practically engaged with, whilst also keeping the employee at the organisation’s central core? Today’s business world cries out for people who can lead with a cross-cultural global perspective, who can lead from the heart as well as the mind and address and manage problems on not just an integrated local level, but also with a healthy, holistic perspective. The subject of spirituality has long been discussed within academic research, but there still seems to be a misunderstanding and stagnation of both its real meaning and application amongst business academics, the population and organisations alike. This book aims to provide a realistic message to help those who are looking for some answers; for those who are looking for a way to advance their own skill-set and progress both their careers and the organisation’s current standing; to move from being confused and insecure about strategies and tactics, to positively contributing to not only their own, but also to the employees’ well-being and the business’s overall purpose and intention. By basing the content upon real and relevant, interesting, modern-day perspectives, applications, requirements, opportunities and benefits, all combined into a manual for thought and a practical framework for action, this book will significantly and realistically move the subject of spirituality forward. This book will be of interest to researchers, academics and students with a special interest in the, positive, influence of spirituality within the workplace and everyday healthy living.
