Book Leadership and Organizational Outcomes

Download or read book Leadership and Organizational Outcomes written by Engin Karadağ and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of leadership on organizational outcomes and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret leadership literature and suggest new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the editors compile various studies examining the relationship between the leadership and thirteen organizational outcomes separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Book The Relationship of Athletic Director Perceived Leadership Behaviors to Student Athlete Academic and Athletic Performance at NCAA DII Institutions

Download or read book The Relationship of Athletic Director Perceived Leadership Behaviors to Student Athlete Academic and Athletic Performance at NCAA DII Institutions written by Robert T. Newhart and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to advance the research in the leadership field of intercollegiate athletics at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II (NCAA DII) level. Particular focus was on the transactional and transformational leadership behaviors, as the independent variables, perceived by NCAA DII athletic directors, as to the relationship to defined organizational outcomes. Conceptual underpinnings were supported by Bass and Avolio's (2004) leadership theory as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) survey. The dependent variables were determined by the athletic-graduation rates and athletic team standings, based upon institutional data. The secondary focus was to gain an understanding of the demographic characteristics of the study group. The statistical findings of the study did not reveal that any significant differences existed between the leadership behavior factors and the defined organizational outcomes. Statistical results did find that relationships existed between IAD leadership factors and demographic characteristics. The IADs with more tenure at their current institution and at the NCAA DII level, utilized significantly more transactional and transformational leadership behaviors supporting Bass and Avolio's (2004) Augmentation Model of Transactional and Transformational Leadership. The overall philosophy of balance between academic and athletic achievement, as defined by the NCAA DII, supports and emphasizes that further research should be conducted at the NCAA DII level. If a problem exists for collegiate athletic leaders to balance academic and athletic achievement, it is recommended that these academic and athletic performance outcomes become part of the equation of the organizational leadership effectiveness definition and debate. It is recommended that higher education officials provide degree programs that teach a combination of higher education leadership theory and understanding plus sport management practices, where typically it is separated in one degree program or the other. Leadership practitioners in this collegiate athletic organizational context are recommended to further the research.

Book NCAA Athletic Directors Self perspective of Transformational transactional Leadership

Download or read book NCAA Athletic Directors Self perspective of Transformational transactional Leadership written by Laurie Watlington Manning and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine NCAA athletic directors' (ADs') perceptions of their own leadership styles as they relate to the five dimensions of transformational leadership and the three dimensions of transactional leadership. The research instrument was the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) with added demographic questions. In addition to the determination of the self-perceived athletic director leadership style, the intention of this study was to determine the possible relationship of demographic and institutional variables including athletic director NCAA Division, age, and gender. Participants were the athletic directors from NCAA Division I, II, and III member higher education institutions. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVAs to examine the research question. The results found significant differences among the institutional variable of NCAA Divisions. A one-way ANOVA demonstrated that transformational leadership traits of intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation set Division I ADs apart from ADs within Divisions II and III. The findings of the study may have significance for intercollegiate ADs in offering an increase in the understanding of their own leadership style. Thus, the AD can move between both transformational and transactional leadership traits depending on a specific task. The findings of the study may also provide a benefit for college and university presidents by hiring and increasing retention of ADs through matching leadership style with the needs and mission of the intercollegiate athletic department.

Book The Relationship Among Transformational Leadership Organizational Outcomes and Service Quality in the Five Major NCAA Conferences

Download or read book The Relationship Among Transformational Leadership Organizational Outcomes and Service Quality in the Five Major NCAA Conferences written by Jin ho Choi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study was to assess the impact of leadership style on service quality in intercollegiate athletics. Specifically, the study examined the relationship between the athletic directors' transformational leadership and service quality as perceived by the student athletes via the organizational outcomes including organizational citizenship behavior, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction. To accomplish this purpose, two web-based surveys were utilized to collect data from 927 head coaches and 1,064 student athletes from 53 institutions of the major five conferences in the NCAA during the 2005-06 academic year. The final response rate from the head coaches was 19% (175/927), and from the student athletes was 25% (271/1064). The instrument included basic demographic information, a nine-item to measure the athletic directors' transformational leadership (Bass, 1985a), a twelve-item measure to assess head coaches' organizational citizenship behavior (Smith, Organ, & Near, 1983), a six-item measure to capture head coaches' affective commitment (Meyer & Allen, 1997), a three-item measure to assess head coaches' overall job satisfaction (Cammann, Fichman, Jenkins, & Klesh, 1983), and a fourteen-item measure to assess student athletes' perceived service quality (Harris, 2002). The descriptive data revealed that the athletic directors' charismatic leadership, one dimension of transformational leadership, was the prominent factor, as perceived by the head coaches. Further, the student athletes perceived responsiveness and empathy as the prominent dimensions of service quality. Results from the SEM indicated that the overall athletic directors' transformational leadership was correlated to all organizational outcomes. In the relationship between the transformational leadership and service quality via the organizational outcomes, generalized compliance mediated the relationship between the transformational leadership and service quality.

Book The Impact of Transformational Leadership on the Job Satisfaction of Certified Athletic Trainers in the NCAA Division I Setting

Download or read book The Impact of Transformational Leadership on the Job Satisfaction of Certified Athletic Trainers in the NCAA Division I Setting written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purpose of this study is to determine the impact of transformational leadership behaviors of Head Athletic Trainers (HATC's) of Division I, NCAA institutions, and identify how these practices affect the job satisfaction of the subordinate certified athletic trainers (ATC's) in their departments. This was done by looking at the five leadership practices of the HATC's as identified by the "Leadership Practice Inventory" (LPI) by Kouzes and Posner, and the job satisfaction of the subordinate certified athletic trainers using the "Job Satisfaction Survey" (JSS) by Spector. The surveys were sent by email to 1,110 ATC's at Division I institutions, where they were asked to evaluate the leadership behaviors of their HATC's with the LPI-Observer, and then to fill out the JSS to show their current satisfaction with their job. Participants were also asked to fill out basic demographic information on employment position, sex, ethnicity, age, and years of experience. The findings show that HATC's in this setting use the leadership practice of enabling others to act significantly more than the others, the practice of inspiring a shared vision significantly less than the others, while modeling the way was significantly more than encouraging the heart, and challenging the process. The results of overall job satisfaction found that ATC's in this setting were more satisfied with their jobs than the norms presented by Spector, but less satisfied than those reported of the Southeastern Conference by Barrett, et. al. Lastly it was found that particular leadership practices strongly correlated with certain facets of job satisfaction. The practice of enabling others to act was a predictor of satisfaction with the facets of promotion, supervision, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, operating conditions, and nature of work. Encouraging the heart was a predictor of satisfaction with pay, and contingent rewards. Modeling the way was a predictor of satisfaction with supervision, co-workers, nature of work, and communication. Challenging the process was found to be a predictor of satisfaction with promotion, supervision, and coworkers. The least used leadership practice of inspiring a shared vision was not found to be a predictor of any facets.

Book Perceptions of Leadership Styles and Job Satisfaction in a Sample of High School Athletic Directors in the United States

Download or read book Perceptions of Leadership Styles and Job Satisfaction in a Sample of High School Athletic Directors in the United States written by Colin J. Turey and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined how athletic directors perceive their leadership roles in interscholastic athletics and the relationship of their leadership styles to their job satisfaction. The conceptual framework of this study was Bass and Avolio's (1994) full range leadership model, also known as the transformational-transactional leadership model, which consists of 9 factor--5 transformational behaviors: idealized influence (attributed), idealized influence (behavior), inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration; 2 transactional behaviors: contingent reward and management-by-exception (active); 2 passive/avoidant behaviors: management-by-exception (passive) and laissez-faire. These 9 factors are measured by the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The study was also informed by Chelladurai's multidimensional model of leadership in sport which focuses on transformational effects of sport leaders on individual satisfaction and group performance. The study was significant in that the effects of transformational leadership on individuals in sporting organizations have not been fully explored in previous research. Both the MLQ and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) served as data collection tools. A sample of 500 athletic directors from across the United States was invited to participate in an electronic survey. Usable data were returned by 55 (11%) of the original sample. Participants self-assessed their leadership styles via the MLQ and job satisfaction via the MSQ. Data were analyzed via canonical correlation analysis followed by canonical commonality analysis. One canonical root was interpreted (Rc2 = .22; pCanonical structure coefficients indicated that Transformational and Passive/Avoidant Leadership made major contributions to the predictor canonical variate; the dependent canonical variate was defined by both Intrinsic and Extrinsic Satisfaction. Canonical commonality analysis indicated that Transformational Leadership had the largest unique variance partition; the largest common variance partition was shared by Transformational and Passive/Avoidant. The analysis also indicated two variable suppressor effects. There was a moderate correlation between athletic directors' leadership styles and their job satisfaction; however, the directionality of the relationships of the variables in the leadership set with satisfaction was unexpected: (a) the relationship between transformational leadership and job satisfaction was found to be negative, and (b) the relationship between passive/avoidant leadership and job satisfaction was positive.

Book Transformational Leadership Behaviors in Christian School Athletic Administrators and Its Correlation with Coach Efficacy

Download or read book Transformational Leadership Behaviors in Christian School Athletic Administrators and Its Correlation with Coach Efficacy written by Christopher David Hobbs and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athletic administrators in a Christian school setting have an unusual amount of influence over large portions of the student body via their influence on coaches. This study investigated the possibility of a correlative relationship between how varsity team head coaches perceive the degree of transformational leadership behaviors of their athletic administrators and their own coaching efficacy. Transformational leadership behaviors could be the most relevant leadership style for modern society while the benefits of coaching efficacy range from an increase in job satisfaction to an increase in student-athlete satisfaction with the athletic experience. A correlation between athletic administrator leadership and the efficacy of their coaches could provide significant insight into ensuring that the student-athlete experience is positive. Utilizing the Global Transformational Leadership scale and the Coaching Efficacy Scale II – High School Teams, 171 varsity head coaches of team sports were surveyed regarding the perceptions of the athletic administrators they work for in Christian high schools. Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation was used to correlate the single scale scores of the Global Transformational Leadership scale and the Total Coaching Efficacy Scores of the Coaching Efficacy Scale II – High School Teams. A moderately positive statistically significant relationship was found between the varsity head coaches’ perception of their athletic administrator’s transformational leadership behaviors and their own coaching efficacy. These findings have implications for how athletic administrators lead their coaches, and what behaviors school leaders should encourage in their athletic administrators.
