Book G Is for Growing

Download or read book G Is for Growing written by Shalom M. Fisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume--a collection and synthesis of key research studies since the program's inception over three decades ago--serves as a marker of the significant role that Sesame Street plays in the education and socialization of young children. Editors Shalom M. Fisch and Rosemarie T. Truglio have included contributions from both academics and researchers directly associated with Sesame Street, creating a resource that describes the processes by which educational content and research are integrated into production, reviews major studies on the impact of Sesame Street on children, and examines the extension of Sesame Street into other cultures and media. In the course of this discussion, the volume also explores broader topics, including methodological issues in conducting media-based research with young children, the longitudinal impact of preschoolers' viewing of educational versus non-educational television, and crosscultural differences in the treatment of educational content. As the first substantive book on Sesame Street research in more than two decades, "G" is for Growing provides insight into the research process that has informed the development of the program and offers valuable guidelines for the integration of research into future educational endeavors. Intended for readers in media studies, children and the media, developmental studies, and education, this work is an exceptional chronicle of the growth and processes behind what is arguably the most influential program in children's educational television.

Book An Examination of Children s Television Viewing and Children s Perception of Their Academics

Download or read book An Examination of Children s Television Viewing and Children s Perception of Their Academics written by Dollie Amanda Lynette Davis and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between television viewing and perception of academic achievement for children. The hypothesis that guided this study was that there would be a significant relationship between children's amount of television viewing and the perception of their academic achievement. Forty participants from after-school programs in Southwest Missouri completed this study. The participants ranged from grades fourth through twelve. The researcher-constructed survey was given out at after-school programs for the participants to complete. The questions included both structured (e.g. sex, grade level, when watching television how do you feel); and unstructured items (e.g. what is your favorite show on television, when you have free time what is your favorite thing to do). Descriptive analysis of the data is reported in addition to chi square analysis that examined the relationship of television viewing and perception of academic achievement. The relationship was not found to be significant at a p = 0.05 level. Recommendations for future research include: allowing the participants to write in the amount of television hours viewed, adding a qualitative research component, using agencies and organizations that have differing hours of operation, allowing parents and children to complete surveys, and use an academic tool in the study (i.e. grade card, GPA).

Book Television Use in Early Childhood and Academic Achievement in Eighth Grade Examining the Moderating Effects of Parental Involvement and Program Content

Download or read book Television Use in Early Childhood and Academic Achievement in Eighth Grade Examining the Moderating Effects of Parental Involvement and Program Content written by Melissa N. Richards and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationship between child-directed television program viewing at a young age and academic achievement later in life as well the moderating role that parents may play in this relationship. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K) was used to gather information about the amount and types of television children watched the year before kindergarten and in first grade, how involved parents were in their child's school and home life, as well as children's subsequent academic achievement in eighth grade. Analyses revealed that children who watched child-directed programming during early childhood did not have higher academic achievement during eighth grade. Results also indicated that parents moderated the relationship between television viewing habits and later academic achievement. Children who watched more television and had more involved parents had higher eighth grade academic achievement than children who watched less television and/or had less involved parents.

Book Advertising and the World Wide Web

Download or read book Advertising and the World Wide Web written by David W. Schumann and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters provide a wide-ranging view of issues addressing how advertisers can proceed on the Internet and World Wide Web. An initial chapter traces the development of Web advertising from its very beginnings as it was represented and discussed in the pages of Advertising Age. Although there is a noticeable trend to define Web advertising by comparing it to traditional media, it is clear that Web advertising just won't fit the old mold. Keith Reinhard of DDB Needham actually articulates this linkage between the old and new in his invited chapter. What the reader will encounter in Advertising and the World Wide Web is a solid conception of how Web advertising is different from anything that has come before. There are numerous discussions on consumer and advertiser interactivity, the role of Web advertising within larger campaigns, audience segmentation, and alternative Web-based promotion formats. The five sections cover definition and theory, structure, specific applications, legal issues, and the voice of the practitioner. Although there remain a few nay-sayers concerning the future of Web advertising, the reader will be able to see just how incredibly high-impact this new medium has become and the vast potential that it holds for future promotional endeavors.

Download or read book Television and Reading written by Susan B. Neuman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on communications, psychological, and educational studies, this paper examines television's influence on reading performance and school achievement. The first section of the paper reviews and synthesizes major studies dealing with the introduction of television in a community and with correlations between television use and school achievement, pointing out that many of the studies have flawed methodologies and weak links between theory and methodology. The second section of the paper synthesizes the results of eight statewide reading assessments and a secondary analysis of the 1984 National Assessment of Educational Progress using hypotheses based on four theories of displacement (the idea that watching television replaces other activities in children's lives). It concludes that television viewing is associated with a different set of needs and gratifications than reading. The report includes extensive tables of data and eight pages of references. (FL)
