Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships existing among teacher quality characteristics and reading and math achievement on the Alabama Reading and Math Test in Title I schools in the Western and Midwestern regions of Alabama. The population identified was 57 schools in 13 school districts (seven feeder schools, five schools with sixth grade only, one school with fifth through sixth grades, and one school with fourth through sixth grades). The sample consisted of 29 schools and 9 school districts and a sample of 284 teachers. This study used descriptive statistics, bivariate (Spearman) correlation, and multiple regression to analyze data to answer three research questions addressing relationships among teachers' pedagogical knowledge, educational background, years of experience, grade level configuration (assignment) and professional development (independent variables), and reading/mathematics achievement (dependent variables) on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. A field test was conducted in a neighboring school district to assist the researcher in evaluating the participants' responses to survey questions, to determine whether the survey questions had the potential to produce the desired data, and to evaluate the wording of the questions on the survey. Particularly, this study verified that teachers' grade level configuration is significantly related to the students' math and reading achievement on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. In the same way, this study also confirmed that teachers' years as a full-time teacher is a significant predictor of student math achievement and teachers' years taught in the public school sector is a significant predictor or student reading achievement. Also, this study confirmed that teachers' professional development components such as Alabama Reading Initiative Training (ARI) is negatively significant to reading achievement on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. These findings were consistently constructed based on statistical analyses, which may have important and practical implications. In effect, such information may be useful for school administrators to continue to examine teacher quality characteristics to determine, which teacher quality characteristics influence student achievement. Furthermore, these findings may guide strategic decisions, mostly those referred to implement policies to improve teacher quality as well as other education policies to motivate high-quality teaching.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the teaching performance of 5th-grade teachers and student achievement growth in 5th-grade reading and mathematics. Using the classroom as the unit of analysis, the entire population of fifty-three 5th-grade teachers and their students were included. The students' class average achievement growth scores in reading and in mathematics were measured by standardized North Carolina End-Of-Grade Tests, and the student class average growth scores were determined by comparing the class mean of the students' scores in each teacher's 5th-grade class with the class mean of the same students' scores on the 4th-grade end-of-grade tests in reading and mathematics. The teachers' classroom performance was measured by the North Carolina Teacher Performance Appraisal Instrument (NCTPAI) rating scale. Ratings on the first five functions of the NCTPAI were included in the study. These items are (a) Management of Instructional Time, (b) Management of Student Behavior, (c) Instructional Presentation, (d) Instructional Monitoring, and (e) Instructional Feedback. For the teachers, data were also collected on type of license and years of teaching experience. The data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation, point biserial correlation, and regression. Stepwise selection results showed the best overall significant predictor of students' mathematics improvement to be Function 3: Instructional Presentation. This model accounted for 11% of the variance in students' improved class average achievement growth in mathematics. A four variable model showed a combination of Function 1: Management of Instructional Time, Function 2: Management of Student Behavior, Teachers' Years of Experience, and Teachers' Type of License to be the best overall predictor for improved students' class average achievement growth in reading. This model accounted for 23% of the variance in students' improved class average achievement in rea.

Book excerpt: Teachers are in a constant cycle of data collection to guide instruction and increase student achievement; however, students are not always involved in the data collection or discussion of their own learning data. The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between students’ tracking of their own learning data and their academic achievement in fifth-grade mathematics as measured by the aimswebPlus assessment. A convenience sample of 154 students from a middle school in a southern Tennessee school district participated in the study using archival data. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to test the null hypothesis to describe the strength and direction of the relationship between students’ tracking of their own learning data as measured by a researcher-created instrument and their academic achievement as measured by the aimswebPlus assessment. It was discovered that no significant relationship was found between students’ tracking of their own learning data and their academic achievement in fifth-grade mathematics. It was concluded that the relationship between students’ fidelity to data tracking and their overall academic achievement could possibly have been significant if the teachers and students received more training on how to track data and use the data tracker notebooks and if students not only tracked their learning data but set individual learning goals based on the data. Since clearer training and the use of student-focused goals was considered as the next step in the process of using student data to increase their academic achievement and allow students to be leaders in their own learning, it would be helpful to conduct a study that seeks to determine the types of student data tracking tools and processes that are most beneficial to increasing student achievement.

Using data from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted between 1995 and 2015, it investigates grade four and grade eight data to assess trends in key teacher characteristics (experience, education, preparedness, and professional development) and teacher behaviors (instructional time and instructional content), and how these relate to student outcomes. Taking advantage of national curriculum data collected by TIMSS to assess changes in curricular strategy across countries and how these may be related to changes in teacher and student factors, the study focuses on the distributional impact of curriculum and instruction on students, paying particular attention to overall inequalities and variations in socioeconomic status at the student and country level, and how such factors have altered over time. Multiple methods, including regression and fixed effects analyses, and structural equation modelling, establish the evolution of these associations over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing concerns over the achievement of U.S. students have led to proposals to reward good teachers and penalize (or fire) bad ones. The leading method for assessing teacher quality is "value added" modeling (VAM), which decomposes students' test scores into components attributed to student heterogeneity and to teacher quality. Implicit in the VAM approach are strong assumptions about the nature of the educational production function and the assignment of students to classrooms. In this paper, I develop falsification tests for three widely used VAM specifications, based on the idea that future teachers cannot influence students' past achievement. In data from North Carolina, each of the VAMs' exclusion restrictions are dramatically violated. In particular, these models indicate large "effects" of 5th grade teachers on 4th grade test score gains. I also find that conventional measures of individual teachers' value added fade out very quickly and are at best weakly related to long-run effects.
