Book The Relationship Between Swelling and Irradiation Creep in 20 Cold Worked 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book The Relationship Between Swelling and Irradiation Creep in 20 Cold Worked 316 Stainless Steel written by MB. Toloczko and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between swelling and irradiation creep was investigated using eight sets of pressurized tubes, representing two heats of 20% cold-worked 316 stainless steel irradiated at either 550°C, 575°C, 600°C, and 670°C in the FFTF-MOTA to doses of 79-84 dpa. After reaching these exposures, the tubes were clearly being affected by the "creep cessation" phenomenon. Many of the tubes had already reached the previously observed maximum strain rate of 0.33%/dpa characteristic of creep cessation. Fortuitous failure of fourteen tubes allowed the separation of creep and swelling strains in the creep cessation regime, showing that the maximum strain rate limitation was reached long before the maximum swelling rate of 1%/dpa was reached. Thus, the creep contribution was declining as the swelling rate increased throughout the irradiation.

Book Relationship Between Swelling and Irradiation Creep in Cold worked PCA Stainless Steel Irradiated to approximately 178 Dpa at approximately 400 degrees C

Download or read book Relationship Between Swelling and Irradiation Creep in Cold worked PCA Stainless Steel Irradiated to approximately 178 Dpa at approximately 400 degrees C written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighth and final irradiation segment for pressurized tubes constructed from the fusion Prime Candidate Alloy (PCA) has been completed in FFTF. At 178 dpa and [approximately]400[degrees]C, the irradiation creep of 20% cold-worked PCA has become dominated by the [open-quotes]creep disappearance[close-quotes] phenomenon. The total diametral deformation rate has reached the limiting value of 0.33%/dpa at the three highest stress levels employed in this test. The stress-enhancement of swelling tends to camouflage the onset of creep disappearance, however, requiring the use of several non-traditional techniques to extract the creep coefficients. No failures occurred in these tubes, even though the swelling ranged from [approximately]20 to [approximately]40%.

Book Irradiation Creep and Swelling of AISI 316 to Exposures of 130 Dpa at 385 to 400 C

Download or read book Irradiation Creep and Swelling of AISI 316 to Exposures of 130 Dpa at 385 to 400 C written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creep and swelling of AISI 316 stainless steel have been studied at 385 to 400°C in EBR-II to doses of 130 dpa. Most creep capsules were operated at constant stress and temperature but mid-life changes in these variable were also made. This paper concentrates on the behavior of the 20% cold-worked condition but five other conditions were also studied. Swelling at less than or equal to00°C was found to lose the sensitivity to stress exhibited at higher temperatures while the creep rate was found to retain linear dependencies on both stress and swelling rate. The creep coefficients extracted at 400°C agree with those found in other experiments conducted at higher temperatures. In the temperature range of less than or equal to400°C, swelling is in the recombination-dominated regime and the swelling rate falls strongly away from the approx. 1%/dpa rate observed at higher temperatures. These lower rates of creep and swelling, coupled with the attainment of high damage levels without failure, encourage the use of AISI 316 in the construction of water-cooled fusion first walls operating at temperatures below 400°C. 23 refs., 8 figs.

Book Post Irradiation Creep Properties of Cold Worked 316 Stainless Steel As Measured with Small Creep Specimens

Download or read book Post Irradiation Creep Properties of Cold Worked 316 Stainless Steel As Measured with Small Creep Specimens written by M. Snykers and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small specimens (4 mm gage length, 1.3 mm diameter) of AISI 20% coldworked (CW) 316 stainless steel have been irradiated at 700°C up to 2 x 1022 n/cm2. Ageing at 650°C as well as irradiation caused a reduction in creep life and an increase in minimum creep rate as compared with as-received specimens. An investigation of a possible size effect indicated no difference between creep results obtained on these small specimens and on larger ones.

Book Irradiation Creep in Bending of Cold Worked AISI 316 Stainless Steel at Low Neutron Fluence

Download or read book Irradiation Creep in Bending of Cold Worked AISI 316 Stainless Steel at Low Neutron Fluence written by WK. Appleby and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results from the first and second interim examinations of a test to measure irradiation creep in bending of 20 percent cold-worked AISI 316 stainless steel are presented. These low-fluence results indicate that irradiation creep in bending exhibits a larger primary creep component of the total strain as compared with creep in biaxial pressurized tubes of the same heat of material, but the secondary creep rates in the two cases appear to be similar. The data also indicate that the bending strains have a linear fluence and stress dependency, and strains measured on beams fabricated parallel to and transverse to the direction of cold work are similar, indicating that material texture anisotropy does not effect irradiation creep in bending. Higher-fluence data are needed to compare precisely irradiation creep in the bending and biaxial stress states so that the applicability can be ascertained for design correlations based on pressurized tube data to predict in-reactor bending deformations of liquid-metal fast-breeder reactor (LMFBR) core components.

Book Determination of Creep Compliance and Creep swelling Coupling Coefficients for Neutron irradiated Titanium modified Stainless Steel at 00 C

Download or read book Determination of Creep Compliance and Creep swelling Coupling Coefficients for Neutron irradiated Titanium modified Stainless Steel at 00 C written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation creep data from FFTF-MOTA at ∼400°C were analyzed for nine 20% cold-worked titanium-modified type 316 stainless steels, each of which exhibits a different duration for the transient regime of swelling. One of these steels was the fusion prime candidate alloy designated PCA. The others were various developmental breeder reactor heats. The analysis was based on the assumption that the B0 + DS creep model applies to these steels at this temperature. This assumption was found to be valid. A creep-swelling coupling coefficient of D ≈ 0.6 × 10−2 MPa−1 was found for all steels that had developed a significant level of swelling. This result is in excellent agreement with the results of earlier studies conducted in EBR-II using annealed AISI 304L and also 10% and 20% cold-worked AISI 316 stainless steels. There appears to be some enhancement of swelling by stress, contradicting an important assumption in the analysis and leading to an apparent but misleading nonlinearity of creep with respect to stress.

Book Understanding and Mitigating Ageing in Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Understanding and Mitigating Ageing in Nuclear Power Plants written by Philip G Tipping and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant life management (PLiM) is a methodology focussed on the safety-first management of nuclear power plants over their entire lifetime. It incorporates and builds upon the usual periodic safety reviews and licence renewals as part of an overall framework designed to assist plant operators and regulators in assessing the operating conditions of a nuclear power plant, and establishing the technical and economic requirements for safe, long-term operation. Understanding and mitigating ageing in nuclear power plants critically reviews the fundamental ageing-degradation mechanisms of materials used in nuclear power plant structures, systems and components (SSC), along with their relevant analysis and mitigation paths, as well as reactor-type specific PLiM practices. Obsolescence and other less obvious ageing-related aspects in nuclear power plant operation are also examined in depth. Part one introduces the reader to the role of nuclear power in the global energy mix, and the importance and relevance of plant life management for the safety regulation and economics of nuclear power plants. Key ageing degradation mechanisms and their effects in nuclear power plant systems, structures and components are reviewed in part two, along with routes taken to characterise and analyse the ageing of materials and to mitigate or eliminate ageing degradation effects. Part three reviews analysis, monitoring and modelling techniques applicable to the study of nuclear power plant materials, as well as the application of advanced systems, structures and components in nuclear power plants. Finally, Part IV reviews the particular ageing degradation issues, plant designs, and application of plant life management (PLiM) practices in a range of commercial nuclear reactor types. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Understanding and mitigating ageing in nuclear power plants is a standard reference for all nuclear plant designers, operators, and nuclear safety and materials professionals and researchers. Introduces the reader to the role of nuclear power in the global energy mix Reviews the fundamental ageing-degradation mechanisms of materials used in nuclear power plant structures, systems and components (SSC) Examines topics including elimination of ageing effects, plant design, and the application of plant life management (PLiM) practices in a range of commercial nuclear reactor types
