Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book Alcohol and the Chosen Few

Download or read book Alcohol and the Chosen Few written by James C. Arnold and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1998-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is an interpretive case study that examines alcohol use by a specific subculture of undergraduates, a college fraternity. Based on nearly three years of investigation using interviews, observation, and document analysis, this study takes a detailed look at the organization's indoctrination process and the ways that their practices are explained by its most astute observers, specifically high-status insiders. Various elements of the author's biography are integrated into the text and used to enhance understanding of the phenomenon under investigation. The multiple purposes of this research were to offer a thick description of college student drinking practices, to describe and understand the organization's socialization processes, and, ultimately, to present an analysis of the group using contemporary organizational theory. This work focused on the way that a social fraternity communicates to its newest members the ways of the world with respect to alcohol consumption and its concomitant attitudes, beliefs and behaviors-and what this means in terms of the way the organization functions. A theoretical model of organizations as addictive systems is refined in this study and used as a basis for understanding the organizational dynamics. Implications of this study for institutional and extra-institutional agents who must work with college fraternities are also discussed.

Book Don t Blame it on the Alcohol

Download or read book Don t Blame it on the Alcohol written by Elizabeth B. Atwood and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Binge drinking is a serious problem on college campuses, which is defined as five drinks on one occasion for men and four drinks on one occasion for women. The focus of this study is on student involvement on campus and how it affects binge drinking. The analysis examines predictors of college binge drinking through a social learning theoretical framework with the intention that the findings can be used to help colleges and universities prevent this dangerous drinking behavior. A logistic analysis of the predictors selected from the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (2001) supports the promotion of campus activities and involvement in student organizations as preventative measures for binge drinking, as well as identifies several student populations at high risk for binge drinking. The findings of this study increases understanding of college binge drinking, has implications for possible intervention programs for campuses and future research, and supports Akers's social learning theory for understanding deviant behavior.

  • Author : George W. Dowdall

Download or read book College Drinking written by George W. Dowdall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking is recognized as one of the most important problems confronting students on campus today, with major impacts on health and safety. This book answers crucial questions about why students drink, examines its complex links to campus crime and sexual assault, and offers new insights on how to address the issue. It differs from other studies of college drinking by dispelling the myth that the problem is universal. Dowdall’s research reveals that the incidence of alcohol abuse varies enormously between colleges, and in doing so identifies interventions and policies that have been effective, and those that have failed. His study is also unique in looking “upstream” at the broader cultural, organizational and social forces that shape this behavior, where most studies focus only on “downstream” behaviors, well after students have selected their college and have started drinking. Students and parents can take action to lower the risk of binge drinking by following the book’s recommendations, and consulting the data it provides about alcohol violations and crime at thousands of colleges. For administrators and student affairs personnel, it both defines and illuminates the issue, and outlines effective interventions.

Book The Relationship Between Student Engagement and Heavy Episodic Drinking

Download or read book The Relationship Between Student Engagement and Heavy Episodic Drinking written by Delynne Wilcox and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College student alcohol use is a significant public health issue facing institutions of higher education. Over the past three decades, significant progress has been made in the areas of research and the identification of recommended best practices to reduce heavy episodic drinking. Yet, students engaged in the prevention of heavy episodic drinking remains largely untapped. This study explored the relationship between student engagement and heavy episodic drinking and its negative consequences. Student engagement, for the purposes of this study, is defined as participation in educational experiences designed to promote cognitive gain and personal development. Findings indicate that student engagement had the opposite effect of what was hoped and signify that student engagement may actually increase heavy episodic drinking and its negative consequences.

Book The Power of Philosophy Policies Programs Practices and Participation

Download or read book The Power of Philosophy Policies Programs Practices and Participation written by William Russell Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between alcohol-related institutional congruence and college students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol was examined. Alcohol-related institutional congruence is defined as the co-congruence among the philosophy, policies, programs, and practices related to alcohol and among administrators, faculty, and students in their understanding and application of the philosophy, policies, programs, and practices related to alcohol. The relationship between student participation in alcohol-related policy and program development and students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol was also examined. Conducted using qualitative research methods, this instrumental case study was designed to provide a better understanding of the research focus (alcohol-related institutional congruence) with the actual case (the research site) serving as a backdrop. The research site was a large, state-assisted Midwestern Doctoral/Research University - Extensive institution. Personal interviews with administrators, faculty, and students (33 participants) provided the primary data for this study; document analysis provided secondary data. The results indicted that alcohol-related institutional congruence has a positive effect on students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol. Specifically, a clear, congruent philosophy on alcohol positively affects students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol; an unclear, incongruent philosophy negatively affects students. Thus, the philosophy on alcohol is a powerful factor in focusing students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol. The results also indicated that student participation in alcohol-related policy and program development has a positive effect on students' attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol. Based on results, eight conclusions were developed to enhance alcohol-related institutional congruence: 1) develop an official written philosophy on alcohol; 2) reduce the number of, if not eliminate, exceptions to the university alcohol policy; 3) toughen enforcement of the university and residence life alcohol policies; 4) centralize and integrate alcohol education and abuse prevention iniatives; 5) establish greater communication and collaboration among university officials, city leaders, and local bar owners; 6) increase the level of student involvement in alcohol-related policy and program development and the extent of student participation in alcohol education and abuse prevention iniatives; 7) increase the level of institutional priority give to the university alcohol committee; and 8) eliminate the campus social normative marketing campaign or similar iniatives.

Book The Effect of College Student Spirituality on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behaviors

Download or read book The Effect of College Student Spirituality on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behaviors written by Kristen S. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College-aged individuals have a significant impact on national health. People in this age group have the highest rates of engagement in many risky health behaviors, such as binge drinking, substance use, and engaging in unprotected sexual activity. The American College Health Association (ACHA) has been actively involved in the study of college health behavior and the initiation of information and services to college health care providers for the past decade. However, little research has been done in this area on sub-populations of the overall college population. This study aims to assess the sub-population of students who attend a faith-based institution. This population is of particular interest due to the significant impact that, both internal and external, religiosity/spirituality have on health behaviors. Data were requested from institutions that have utilized the National College Health Assessment (NCHA-II) and also have identified themselves as Protestant or Other Christian. The data was aggregated and randomly sampled for comparison to a random matched sample from the national reference group. Comparative analyses found significant group differences in the levels of engagement in alcohol use, binge drinking, and number of sexual partners.
