Book A Comparative Analysis Of The Physical Characteristics Between Starting And Back Up Baseball Players At The NCAA Division III Level And A Grant For Evaluating The Differences In Physcial Characteristics Of Players At The NCAA Division I III Level And Their Impact On Performance

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis Of The Physical Characteristics Between Starting And Back Up Baseball Players At The NCAA Division III Level And A Grant For Evaluating The Differences In Physcial Characteristics Of Players At The NCAA Division I III Level And Their Impact On Performance written by Jacob Beiting and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to investigate whether age, anthropometric characteristics, and athleticism of NCAA D3 collegiate baseball players were related to their playing status (starter versus backup). In the two weeks prior to the start of their championship season, 144 participants from three universities in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States completed an assessment protocol consisting of standing and seated height, wingspan, weight, body composition, grip strength, countermovement vertical jumps on force plates, and 20yd sprints. Upon conclusion of their season, their year end statistics were evaluated to determine whether they met the criteria as a starter or a backup. Independent samples t-tests were then performed to determine if statistically significant differences in performance were observed on the assessment protocols by starters and backups. Overall, starters were significantly older than backups, and performed significantly better on all of the metrics related to performance on countermovement vertical jump. When investigating playing status by position (pitcher or hitter) different relationships existed. Starting pitchers were significantly older and produced significantly higher peak concentric power than their backups. Starting hitters were also significantly older than their backups, in addition to being better than the backups on assessments of grip strength, and several metrics derived from the countermovement jumps (flight time to contraction time ratio, relative peak concentric power, and jump height).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Keep your eye on the ball!" may be good advice--but it is impossible to do. The batter can track the ball until it is about five feet in front of the plate, but then he falls behind because the ball is moving too fast. In Keep Your Eye on the Ball, Robert G. Watts and A. Terry Bahill--engineers by vocation, baseball fans by avocation--have devised a series of experiments that put some of baseball's most cherished myths to the test. By applying physics, psychology, physiology, and other scientific principles to baseball, the authors have resolved, once and for all, some of the controversial issues that have intrigued fans for decades, including: * Do curveballs really curve? Do fastballs rise? * How do knuckleballs and spitballs work? * What exactly happens when the ball hits the bat? * Does corking the bat really help a hitter? * Are aluminum bats more dangerous than wooden bats? * Can certain physiological factors help predict success for a hitter? * Why are more home runs being hit than ever before? * Are today's players better than yesterday's? Completely revised and updated to include recent statistics, new research, and additional historical commentary, Keep Your Eye on the Ball is a highly informative and entertaining guide to the science of baseball that all fans of the game--regardless of scientific background--will enjoy.

Book Characteristics of Adolescent Baseball Pitchers and Their Relationship to Throwing Velocity

Download or read book Characteristics of Adolescent Baseball Pitchers and Their Relationship to Throwing Velocity written by Robert A. Schulte and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throwing is a complex biomechanical feat that requires a balance between mobility and stability of the human kinetic chain. Shoulder muscle weakness and adaptive tissue changes have been proposed as a possible risk for developing injury. Objective quantification of anthropometric characteristics has been identified in a population of professional baseball pitchers, but there is a paucity in the literature regarding the adolescent pitcher. The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of healthy adolescent pitchers and determine the relationships between shoulder passive range of motion, eccentric strength, field-testing performance and other anthropometric data to pitching velocity. Thirty-seven healthy Babe Ruth baseball players age 14-15 were tested bilaterally for selected anthropometric and field testing measurements to determine if the throwing side differed in strength, range of motion, and various performance measures from the nonthrowing side. Passive internal and external range of motion was bilaterally measured at 90° of abduction. Muscle strength of the supraspinatus, handgrip, and internal and external glenohumeral rotators were measured with a hand-held dynamometer. Field-testing consisted of the following tests: sit-ups, medicine ball throw, standing long jump, and Davies Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test. Correlational statistics were used to determine if any of these characteristics were significant predictors for pitch velocity in adolescent pitchers. No significant strength difference existed between extremities in external rotator, internal rotator, or supraspinatus strength. However, a significant difference of handgrip strength existed in the pitching arm as compared to the nonpitching arm. When compared to the nonpitching arm, the bilateral glenohumeral passive range of motion tests demonstrated greater passive external rotation in 90° of abduction in the pitching arm of adolescent players. Results demonstrated significantly greater distance by the nonpitching side during the single-leg hop test. Furthermore, this study identified external rotation strength and the single-leg hop test (stride leg) distance as two significant predictors for pitch velocity in adolescent pitchers. The strength, range of motion, and performance characteristics identified in this study can assist the practitioner in evaluating and treating adolescent athletes who use overhead throwing motions.

Book Effects of Various Anthropometric Measurements on Fastball Velocity in Professional Relief Pitchers

Download or read book Effects of Various Anthropometric Measurements on Fastball Velocity in Professional Relief Pitchers written by Cory N. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research study was conducted to compare the height and weights of Major League Baseball (MLB) relief pitchers to their average fastball velocity during the 2007 season. The purpose was to find what correlations may exist between each independent variableand the dependent variable. In essence, how well does height and weight predict average fastball velocity? The participants included qualifying MLB relief pitchers that finished in the top seventy-five of average fastball velocity. Data was collected from Baseball Info Solutions regarding height, weight, and fastball velocity and placed into IBM's SPSS statistical analysis software. The statistical technique used to analyze the data was multiple regression with a set wise progression. The overall model displayed no significant correlation (r value; 0.131, p value; .535) and also showed that the independent variables accounted for only 1.7% of the dependent variable's value (R2 = .017). The mean average fastball velocity was 93.256 mph while average heights and weights of the players were, 189.68cm, and 97.35kg, respectively. Results showed that there was no significant correlation between fastball velocity and weight (r value;0.132) or height (r value; 0.380). While there were no significant correlations found in the general anthropometric measurements used there may be other predictors present that can better account for average fastball velocity. Future research is needed to find these predictors and what affect they have on the ability to throw with a high velocity."--Abstract.

Book The Sports Gene

Download or read book The Sports Gene written by David Epstein and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller – with a new afterword about early specialization in youth sports – from the author of Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. The debate is as old as physical competition. Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success and the so-called 10,000-hour rule, David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving it. Through on-the-ground reporting from below the equator and above the Arctic Circle, revealing conversations with leading scientists and Olympic champions, and interviews with athletes who have rare genetic mutations or physical traits, Epstein forces us to rethink the very nature of athleticism.
