Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions about self-disclosure-whether to reveal one's thoughts, feel ings, or past experiences to another person, or the level of intimacy of such disclosure-are part of the everyday life of most persons. The nature of the decisions that a person makes will have an impact on his or her life. They will determine the kinds of relationships the person has with others; how others perceive him or her; and the degree of self knowledge and awareness that the person possesses. The study of self-disclosure has interested specialists from many disciplines, including personality and social psychologists, clinical and counseling psychologists, and communications researchers. Our book brings together the work of experts from these various disciplines with the hope that knowledge about work being done on self-disclosure in related disciplines will be increased. A strong emphasis in each of the chapters is theory development and the integration of ideas about self-disclosure. The book's chapters explore three major areas, including the interrelationship of self-disclosure and personality as well as the role of self-disclosure in the development, maintenance, and deterioration of personal relationships, and the con tribution of self-disclosure to psychotherapy, marital therapy, and counseling.

Book Lonely Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Lonely Children and Adolescents written by Malka Margalit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From texting and social networking sites to after-school activities, young people have many opportunities to interact with one another, and yet loneliness and isolation trouble today’s youth in increasing numbers. Many children and teens report feeling lonely even in the midst of family and friends, and childhood loneliness is a prime risk factor for adult alienation. Lonely Children and Adolescents: Self-Perceptions, Social Exclusion, and Hope illuminates seldom-explored experiences of social isolation among young people as well as the frustrations of the parents and teachers who wish to help. This groundbreaking book conceptualizes loneliness not simply as the absence of social connections, but as a continuum of developmental experience, often growing out of the conflict between opposite needs: to be like one’s peers yet be one’s unique self. The author draws clear distinctions between loneliness and solitude and identifies genetic and environmental characteristics (i.e., social, psychological, familial, and educational) that can be reinforced to help children become more resilient and less isolated. In addition, therapeutic approaches are described that challenge loneliness by encouraging empowerment, resilience, and hope, from proven strategies to promising tech-based interventions. Highlights include: • Developmental perspectives on loneliness. • Schools and the role of teachers, from preschool to high school. • Peer relations (e.g., cliques, bullies, exclusion, and popularity). • Lonely children, lonely parents: models of coping. • Loneliness in the virtual world. • Prevention and intervention strategies at home, at school, in therapy. Asking its readers to rethink many of their assumptions about social competence and isolation, this volume is essential reading for researchers and professionals in clinical child, school, developmental, and educational psychology; allied education disciplines; social work; and social and personality psychology.

Book The Function of Self disclosure in Positive Mental Health and a Perceived Interpersonal Relationship

Download or read book The Function of Self disclosure in Positive Mental Health and a Perceived Interpersonal Relationship written by Susan Beth Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sidney Jourard has hypothesized that self-disclosure leads to positive mental health and that self-disclosure is also an index of the strength of a relationship between two people. Past research has not found a high correlation between self-disclosure and positive mental health, also recent research has not found a significant correlation between self-disclosure and the strength of a relationship between two best friends. The present study was designed to investigate the function of both positive mental health and strength of relationship between two best friends, in regard to self-disclosure. The results of the present study showed a significant effect of strength of relationship on self-disclosure. However, positive mental health did not significantly effect self-disclosure nor did an interaction of strength of the relationship and positive mental health effect self-disclosure. Future studies were advised to specify the type of self-disclosure being investigated.

Book excerpt: This impressive volume reintroduces the importance of -- and the contributions made by -- social psychology to school psychology. It provides an overview of the basic areas of social psychology (history, attitudes, attribution, attraction, and research methods) as well as the traditional school psychology functions (assessment, therapy, and consultation). To unite these two crucial areas, the editors and their contributors provide detailed discussions of specific educational and social issues such as substance abuse prevention and treatment, loneliness, cooperative versus competitive environments, and integration of handicapped and culturally different children. Based on classical, contemporary, and cutting-edge research and theory, this text should become an essential reference tool for all school psychologists.
