Book Individual Self Relational Self Collective Self

Download or read book Individual Self Relational Self Collective Self written by Constantine Sedikides and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume addresses key issues relating to the concept of self, an increasingly researched area of social psychology. The self-concept consists of three fundamental self-representations: the individual self, the relational self, and the collective self. That is, people seek to achieve self-definition and self-interpretation (i.e. identity) in three fundamental ways: in terms of their personal traits, in terms of dyadic relationships, and in terms of group membership. Contributions from leading international researchers examine the interrelations among three self-representations. A concluding commentary identifies running themes, synthesizes the extant literature, and points to future research directions.

Book excerpt: This welcome resource traces the evolution of self-concept clarity and brings together diverse strands of research on this important and still-developing construct. Locating self-concept clarity within current models of personality, identity, and the self, expert contributors define the construct and its critical roles in both individual and collective identity and functioning. The book examines commonly-used measures for assessing clarity, particularly in relation to the more widely understood concept of self-esteem, with recommendations for best practices in assessment. In addition, a wealth of current data highlights the links between self-concept clarity and major areas of mental wellness and dysfunction, from adaptation and leadership to body image issues and schizophrenia. Along the way, it outlines important future directions in research on self-concept clarity. Included in the coverage: Situating self-concept clarity in the landscape of personality. Development of self-concept clarity across the lifespan. Self-concept clarity and romantic relationships. Who am I and why does it matter? Linking personal identity and self-concept clarity. Consequences of self-concept clarity for well-being and motivation. Self-concept clarity and psychopathology. Self-Concept Clarity fills varied theoretical, empirical, and practical needs across mental health fields, and will enhance the work of academics, psychologists interested in the construct as an area of research, and clinicians working with clients struggling with developing and improving their self-concept clarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of the theoretical and empirical work on relationship-induced self-concept change that has occurred over the last 10-15 years. The chapters in this volume discuss the foundations of relationship self-change, how and when it occurs, how it influences relationship decisions and behavior, and how it informs and modifies subsequent knowledge structures, all examined over the course of the relationship cycle (i.e., initiation, maintenance, and dissolution). Additionally, this volume identifies novel applications and extensions of the relationship self-change literature, including applications to health and behavior, intergroup relations, and the workplace. Among the topics discussed: Self-disclosure in the acquaintance process Commitment readiness Bolstering attachment security through close relationships Self-concept clarity and self-change The role of social support in promoting self-development Relationship dissolution and self-concept change Intergroup and sociocultural factors of self-expansion Self-concept change at work Measurement of relationship-induced self-concept change Interpersonal Relationships and the Self-Concept serves both as a comprehensive overview of the existing empirical research as well as a roadmap for future research on self-change, including a discussion of emerging theoretical frameworks. It will interest researchers focusing on romantic relationships, self and identity, and the intersection of self and relationships, spanning the disciplines of psychology, sociology, communication, and family studies.

Download or read book The Self system written by Annerieke Oosterwegel and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a longitudinal study dealing with developmental changes within and between self-concepts and their relation to personal functioning. Within the psychological literature -- and the developmental literature in particular -- the interest in the ideas people hold about themselves and their relation with personal functioning is rapidly growing. This interest is reinforced by the emphasis on individuality in Western society. The self-system is now thought to consist of a collection of self-concepts in which a distinction is made between domain-specific self-concepts -- the real and ideal -- and context-related self-concepts -- the academic, the athletic and the social. It is also considered to be subjective rather than objective. This subjective self involves characteristics such as continuity and distinctiveness from others. These characteristics have been the primary focus of recent research. In existing literature on the development of the self-system, little is known about the structural characteristics -- that is, developmental changes in the interrelationships among domain-specific and context-related self-concepts, or between and within self-concepts. Similarly, little information is available about the relationships between individuals' real and ideal self concepts, their perceived concepts of others, and the actual ideas others have about the same individuals. This book integrates hitherto separate and different components or aspects of self-knowledge into one encompassing, multidimensional self-system.

Book Client centered and Experiential Psychotherapy in the Nineties

Download or read book Client centered and Experiential Psychotherapy in the Nineties written by Richard Balen and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This voluminous book of 47 chapters offers a good cross section of what is burgeoing in the field of client-centered and experiential psychotherapy on the threshold of the nineties. it does not represent a single vision but gives the floor to the various suborientations: classics Rogerians; client-centered therapists who favor some form of integration or even eclecticism; experiential psychotherapists for whom Gendlin's focusing approach is a precious way of working; client-centered therapists who look at the therapy process in terms of information-processing; existentially oriented therapists... Remarkable is that - for the first time in the history of client-centered/experiential psychotherapy - the European voice rings through forcefully: more than half of the contributions were written by authors from Western Europe.Several chapters contain reflections on the evolution--past, present, and future--of client-centered/experiential psychotherapy. The intensive research into the process, which had a central place in the initial phase of client-centered therapy, is given here ample attention, with several creative studies and proposals for renewal. In numerous contributions efforts are made to build and further develop a theroy of psychopathology, the client's process, the basic attitudes and task-oriented interventions of the therapist. The chapters dealing with clinical practice typically aim at the description of therapy with specific client populations and paricularly severely disturbed clients. And finally a few fields are introduced which are new or barely explored within the client-centered/experiential approach: working with dreams, health psychology, couple and family therapy.

Book Confronting Prejudice and Discrimination

Download or read book Confronting Prejudice and Discrimination written by Robyn K. Mallett and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting Prejudice and Discrimination: The Science of Changing Minds and Behaviors focuses on confrontation as a strategy for reducing bias and discrimination. The volume tackles questions that people face when they wish to confront bias: What factors influence people’s decisions to confront or ignore bias in its various forms? What are the motives and consequences of confrontation? How can confrontation be approached individually, through education and empowerment, and in specific contexts (e.g., health care) to yield favourable outcomes? These questions are paramount in contemporary society, where confrontation of bias is increasingly evident. Moreover, great strides in the scientific study of confrontation in the past 20 years has yielded valuable insights and answers. This volume is an essential resource for students and researchers with an interest in prejudice and prejudice reduction, and will also be valuable to non-academics who wish to stand up to bias through confrontation. Addresses factors that determine individuals’ decisions to confront stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination Analyzes how personal and collective motives shape responses in confrontation-relevant situations Examines the consequences of confrontation from the perspectives of targets, perpetrators and bystanders Provides a roadmap for how to prepare for and engage in successful confrontations at the individual level Covers confronting bias in various settings including in schools, health care, the workplace and on the internet Discusses confrontation in the context of racism, sexism, sexual harassment and other forms of bias, including intersectional forms of bias

Download or read book The Social Self written by David Bakhurst and published by SAGE Publications Limited. This book was released on 1995-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much discussion in recent years has centred on the status of the self, identity and subjectivity in the light of powerful arguments about the social origins of personhood. The Social Self presents many dimensions of the debate, spanning psychology, philosophy, politics and feminist theory, and provides a critical overview of the key themes involved. The internationally renowned contributors examine the senses in which we are `social selves' whose very identities are intimately bound up with the communities and cultures in which we live. Drawing on Wittgenstein, Marx, Foucault, Bakhtin, Gilligan and MacIntyre, among others, the chapters show the diversity of influences that have shaped this exciting and controversial

Book Determinants of Self concept Change in New Environments

Download or read book Determinants of Self concept Change in New Environments written by Jonathan Smith Gore and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-concept is a hierarchical, multi-faceted cognitive structure that is composed of four self-domains: individual, relational, group, and ecological. Four routes to self-concept change were proposed (individual, relationship, group, and ecological), and the influences of these routes on each of the four self-domains and psychological well-being were investigated. One hundred thirty-six undergraduates participated in this three-wave study (117 returned at Time 2 eight weeks after the first session, and 61 returned again at Time 3 during the first two months of the second semester). At Time 1, they generated an open-ended list of self-descriptors, and a questionnaire that consisted of pre-selected self-domain, expectations of change, attempts at change, and well-being measures. They then rated the amount of contact they had with seven people, seven groups, and their home environment. For the second and third sessions, participants received their original self-descriptors list, and were asked to cross-off any of the items on the list they believed were irrelevant in their current environment (maintenance failure), and to add any statements to the list that were new self-aspects (self-expansion). The remainder of the session proceeded in the same manner as at Time 1, except participants re-rated the frequency and quality of contact with the people from the relationships/groups lists from Time 1. Results using bivariate correlation, regression, and structural equation modeling analyses showed that the process through which most change occurs is through contact with new relationships (the relationship route), but the volitional attempts at change (the individual route) also predicted self-concept change. Contact with new social groups (the group route) was associated with higher levels of psychological well-being, and contact with the new environment as a whole (the ecological route) was associated with self-expansion. The findings also provided some evidence that individual differences in expectations moderated some of the effects of the routes on the self-domains. These results suggest that self-concept change during the transition to college can mostly be understood through the change in one's social environment. Implications for other relocation instances and psychotherapy are discussed.
