This book was released on 1973 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the Human Development Program (HDP) and reading achievement and between HDP and the self-concept of selected fourth grade students attending a public school. A further purpose was to investigate the relationship between fourth grade students' measured feelings of responsibility for the consequences of their academic behaviors (internality) and reading achievement and between internality and self-concept. The subjects were randomly placed into treatment and control groups on the basis of the students' feelings of internality and the students' sex. The 3Z treatment subjects were exposed to 19 twenty-five minute sessions of HDP activities within a ten week period. The 32 control subjects received no attention other than the pre- and post-testing that all subjects received. Reading achievement was measured with the Informal Reading Inventory (IRI). Self-concept was measured with the Self-Concept and Motivation Inventory (SCAMIN) and internality was measured with the Intellectual-Academic Responsibility Questionnaire (IAR). Hypotheses one and two studied the relationship between the control and experimental groups' mean gain scores on reading achievement and on self-concept. Hypotheses three and four studied the relationship between scores of internality of the experimental group subjects and mean gain scores on reading achievement and on self-concept. Hypotheses one and two were analyzed with a two-way analysis of covariance using the pre-test as the covariate. One factor was the treatment; the other factor was the IAR quartile. Hypotheses three and four were analyzed with an unpaired t test on the gain in pre- to post-test scores, adjusted for pretest scores. Significance was tested at the . 05 level of confidence. The results yielded a significant relationship at the .05 level on hypothesis one. Hypothesis one was rejected and it was concluded that the participation of the experimental subjects in the Human Development Program was associated with reading achievement, No significant difference was discovered for hypotheses two, three or four.

Book excerpt: Education reform continues at a rapid pace in American schools, yet many minority students continue to struggle with reading achievement. This quantitative study examines the relationship between self-efficacy and fourth grade reading achievement. The theoretical framework for this study uses Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and Jerome Bruner's Constructivist Theory. This research study asked three questions. First, what is the relationship between self-efficacy and student reading achievement? Second, is there a significant relationship between self-concept and socioeconomic status on student reading achievement? Third, is there a significant relationship between self-efficacy on student achievement for any of the independent variables of gender, race/ethnicity, and/or socioeconomic status? The study collected data from the 2013 NAEP fourth grade reading assessment, which used data from 189,400 public schools and derived from a sample group of 196,000 fourth-grade students. The researcher employed a Plausible Value Regression to test hypotheses. Findings indicate a significant relationship between self-efficacy and reading achievement for fourth-grade minority students. Self-concept, socioeconomic status, gender, and race/ethnicity are variables associated with this finding. Based on the present study results, it is recommended that educators develop a cadre of best practices to address minority students' self-efficacy considering the evidence for the impact of student socioeconomic status. This study contributes to social change by providing educators with an understanding of the concept of self-efficacy and its correlation to academic achievement in reading, especially among minority students who are faced with a multitude of challenges in society today.

Using case studies, the book describes how the 5-step approach assists in creating detailed profiles of students’ strengths and weaknesses in spoken and written language skills that can be used to guide targeted intervention This book offers valuable insights for educators, speech pathologists, researchers, and pre-service teacher education students interested in the teaching of reading

Download or read book The Relation of Elementary Students Academic Self concept of Reading to Grade Level Achievement and Teacher Perceptions written by Jessica M. Diehl and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present study examined the relationships among grade level, students' reading achievement, teacher perceptions of student ability, and students' reading self-concept beliefs. Spearman correlations and independent samples t-tests were used to determine the relationships, if any, among these variables. Results revealed significant relationships between student and teacher perceptions of reading ability and students' actual reading achievement. A significant difference was also found between first and fifth grade students with respect to reading competency beliefs. Implications of the findings are discussed."--Abstract.
