Some schools have begun implementing strategies to address the gender specific problem of relational aggression among females. Set Up, a Kansas City, Missouri organization, provides this service to area schools and this research assesses some of the information gleaned from its curriculum. Utilizing the Attitudes toward Women Scale for Adolescents (Galambos, Petersen, Richards, & Gitelson, 1985), the current research explores the issues related to gender role expectations and the dynamics of relational aggression among females, including physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual aggression. Additionally, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1985) was used to identify relationships between female bullying and self-esteem. T-tests and bivariate analyses were conducted in order to gauge these relationships.

Book excerpt: This study reviewed the pertinent literature on relational aggression among adolescent girls as well as one its strong correlation with social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to also examine the various forms and characteristics of relational aggression such as indirect and social aggression that many researchers frequently use interchangeably. The research conducted on relational aggression is relatively new, though it has revealed evidence that suggests it is highly prevalent in adolescent girls. Social exclusion was found by research to be one of the main characteristics of relational aggression because a large fear of many girls is to be excluded and feel lonely. This study also looked at the affects of the aggressor and victim of relational aggression. The research has demonstrated evidence that there can be serious social-psychological adjustment issues, depression, severe loneliness, and low self-esteem that affect both the victim and the aggressor. The detrimental effect relational aggression has on girls only strengthens reasons why this behavior should be researched more in depth including effective prevention and intervention strategies.

Specifically of interest was how gender composition of aggressor-victim dyads may relate differently to depression and self-esteem reported by victims. This study was conducted using a survey with 35 freshman at a Northern California high school. Results support the linkage between victimization and depression for all groups where self-esteem was associated with only same-gender aggressor-victim dyads. Genders differences were found in the ratings of harmfulness of relational aggression tactics. Limitations and future implications are discussed.

This study examined the relationships among intrinsic and extrinsic protective factors such as high self-esteem, high self-efficacy, mattering to others, positive sense of identity, and healthy peer relationships in female adolescents. Additionally, the current study assessed the impact of a positive youth development intervention designed for this particular population. The potential sample consisted of adolescent girls who were students at an alternative high school in the Southwestern region of the United States. Of the 25 girls at the school, 12 participated in the study and completed pre-test instruments measuring self-esteem, self-efficacy, mattering to friends and parents, identity distress, and relational aggression. The instruments were administered before and after a positive youth development intervention of which 10 of the 12 participants attended.

Book excerpt: By its very nature, relational aggression is about relationships. Human relationships are incredibly complex and multifaceted and are influenced not only by the individuals involved in the relationship but also the context and culture in which these relationships exist. The purpose of this study was to create a group that could help adolescent girls to identify and to challenge gender-role stereotypes, and maximize the potential for individual socialization. The Go Grrrls Program was implemented to help the girls learn skills they could utilize to change the way they interact with the world. A pre and posttest questionnaire was given to a sample of six ninth grade girls at a Western New York High School. The sample included six females who were selected at random. Each student completed thirteen sessions of group counseling. Results for each student are reported. The study demonstrated that the girls had a 1.1 percent change in the category of self-efficacy and a 5.2 percent increase in the category of self-esteem. Limitations of the study are discussed. Implications for counselors are presented.
