Book The Dynamics of Relational Aggression Among Adolescent Females

Download or read book The Dynamics of Relational Aggression Among Adolescent Females written by Kimberly Raye Kras and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of bullying among adolescents has raised concerns for teachers, administrators as well as the public. Some schools have begun implementing strategies to address the gender specific problem of relational aggression among females. Set Up, a Kansas City, Missouri organization, provides this service to area schools and this research assesses some of the information gleaned from its curriculum. Utilizing the Attitudes toward Women Scale for Adolescents (Galambos, Petersen, Richards, & Gitelson, 1985), the current research explores the issues related to gender role expectations and the dynamics of relational aggression among females, including physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual aggression. Additionally, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1985) was used to identify relationships between female bullying and self-esteem. T-tests and bivariate analyses were conducted in order to gauge these relationships.

Book No More Mean Girls

Download or read book No More Mean Girls written by Katie Hurley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Queen Bees and Wannabes for the elementary and middle school set, child and adolescent psychotherapist Katie Hurley shows parents of young girls how to nip mean girl behavior in the bud. Once upon a time, mean girls primarily existed in high school, while elementary school-aged girls spent hours at play and enjoyed friendships without much drama. But in this fast-paced world in which young girls are exposed to negative behaviors on TV and social media from the moment they enter school, they are also becoming caught up in social hierarchies much earlier. No More Mean Girls is a guide for parents to help their young daughters navigate tricky territories such as friendship building, creating an authentic self, standing up for themselves and others, and expressing themselves in a healthy way. The need to be liked by others certainly isn't new, but this generation of girls is growing up in an age when the "like" button shows the world just how well-liked they are. When girls acknowledge that they possess positive traits that make them interesting, strong, and likeable, however, the focus shifts and their self-confidence soars; "likes" lose their importance. This book offers actionable steps to help parents empower young girls to be kind, confident leaders who work together and build each other up.

Book The Development of Relational Aggression

Download or read book The Development of Relational Aggression written by Sarah M. Coyne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research over the last few decades has revealed that individuals use a variety of mechanisms to hurt one another, many of which are not physical in nature. In this volume, editors Sarah M. Coyne and Jamie M. Ostrov turn their focus on relational aggression, behavior that is intended to cause harm to another individual's relationships or social standing in the group (e.g., gossiping, social exclusion, and spreading malicious rumors). Unlike physical aggression, the scars of relational aggression are more difficult to detect. However, victims (and their aggressors) may experience strong and long-lasting consequences, including reduced self-esteem, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and more. Over the past 25 years, there has been a growing body of literature on relational aggression and other non-physical forms of aggression that have focused predominantly on gender differences, development, and risk and protective factors. In this volume, the focus turns to the development of relational aggression during childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Here, Coyne, Ostrov, and their contributing authors examine a number of risk factors and socializing agents or models (e.g., parenting, peers, media, the classroom) that lead to the development of relational aggression over time. An understanding of how these behaviors develop will inform readers of important intervention strategies to curb the use of relational aggression in schools, peer groups, and in family relationships. The Development of Relational Aggression provides scholars, researchers, practitioners, students, and parents with an extensive resource that will help move the field forward in our understanding of the development of relational aggression for the future.

Book The Psychological Impact of Relational Aggression on Adolescent Females

Download or read book The Psychological Impact of Relational Aggression on Adolescent Females written by Marcy M. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational aggressive behaviors are the strategies used to socially sabotage relationships, social status and self- esteem of others. This type of bullying is on the rise. In the past, this type of aggressive behavior was widely associated with physical aggression. Now that more females are engaging in bullying, relational aggression is the preferred form of bullying for many adolescent girls. Spreading gossip, starting rumors, and excluding peers is an effective way to damage and manipulate others while remaining behind the scenes. Victims of this type of bullying may have long-term ramifications which could also lead to psychological damage. In addition to emotional distress, many girls experience physical symptoms including headaches, stomach issues, fatigue and sadness. The patterns of relational aggression found in cyber relationships are in the form of intimidation, harassment, and threats. These are commonly occurring online and through cell phone texting. School counselors, parents, and teachers need to know the kinds of behavior girls are using to be covertly aggressive toward others.

Book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents written by Mitchell J. Prinstein and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists, educators, and parents of teens have long recognized the potency of peer influences on children and youth, but until recently, questions of how and why adolescents emulate their peers were largely overlooked. This book presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the processes by which peers shape each other's attitudes and behavior, and explores implications for intervention and prevention. Leading authorities share compelling findings on such topics as how drug use, risky sexual behavior, and other deviant behaviors "catch on" among certain peer groups or cliques; the social, cognitive, developmental, and contextual factors that strengthen or weaken the power of peer influence; and the nature of positive peer influences and how to support them.

Book A Review of Literature on Relational Aggression and Social Exclusion in Adolescent Girls

Download or read book A Review of Literature on Relational Aggression and Social Exclusion in Adolescent Girls written by Kaisa L. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviewed the pertinent literature on relational aggression among adolescent girls as well as one its strong correlation with social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to also examine the various forms and characteristics of relational aggression such as indirect and social aggression that many researchers frequently use interchangeably. The research conducted on relational aggression is relatively new, though it has revealed evidence that suggests it is highly prevalent in adolescent girls. Social exclusion was found by research to be one of the main characteristics of relational aggression because a large fear of many girls is to be excluded and feel lonely. This study also looked at the affects of the aggressor and victim of relational aggression. The research has demonstrated evidence that there can be serious social-psychological adjustment issues, depression, severe loneliness, and low self-esteem that affect both the victim and the aggressor. The detrimental effect relational aggression has on girls only strengthens reasons why this behavior should be researched more in depth including effective prevention and intervention strategies.

Book Cross gender Relational Aggression in Adolescence

Download or read book Cross gender Relational Aggression in Adolescence written by Christopher Robert Skrabec and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of this study were to examine cross-gender relational aggression during adolescence and how it may be related to depression and self-esteem. Specifically of interest was how gender composition of aggressor-victim dyads may relate differently to depression and self-esteem reported by victims. This study was conducted using a survey with 35 freshman at a Northern California high school. Results support the linkage between victimization and depression for all groups where self-esteem was associated with only same-gender aggressor-victim dyads. Genders differences were found in the ratings of harmfulness of relational aggression tactics. Limitations and future implications are discussed.

Book At risk Adolescent Girls

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a tumultuous time, and for those with risk factors, it can be even more difficult. This study examined the relationships among intrinsic and extrinsic protective factors such as high self-esteem, high self-efficacy, mattering to others, positive sense of identity, and healthy peer relationships in female adolescents. Additionally, the current study assessed the impact of a positive youth development intervention designed for this particular population. The potential sample consisted of adolescent girls who were students at an alternative high school in the Southwestern region of the United States. Of the 25 girls at the school, 12 participated in the study and completed pre-test instruments measuring self-esteem, self-efficacy, mattering to friends and parents, identity distress, and relational aggression. The instruments were administered before and after a positive youth development intervention of which 10 of the 12 participants attended.

Book The Hidden Side of Bullying

Download or read book The Hidden Side of Bullying written by Anna Martinez Capolino and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By its very nature, relational aggression is about relationships. Human relationships are incredibly complex and multifaceted and are influenced not only by the individuals involved in the relationship but also the context and culture in which these relationships exist. The purpose of this study was to create a group that could help adolescent girls to identify and to challenge gender-role stereotypes, and maximize the potential for individual socialization. The Go Grrrls Program was implemented to help the girls learn skills they could utilize to change the way they interact with the world. A pre and posttest questionnaire was given to a sample of six ninth grade girls at a Western New York High School. The sample included six females who were selected at random. Each student completed thirteen sessions of group counseling. Results for each student are reported. The study demonstrated that the girls had a 1.1 percent change in the category of self-efficacy and a 5.2 percent increase in the category of self-esteem. Limitations of the study are discussed. Implications for counselors are presented.

Book The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication

Download or read book The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication written by Brian H. Spitzberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication examines the multifunctional ways in which seemingly productive communication can be destructive—and vice versa—and explores the many ways in which dysfunctional interpersonal communication operates across a variety of personal relationship contexts. This second edition of Brian Spitzberg and William Cupach’s classic volume presents new chapters and topics, along with updates of several chapters in the earlier edition, all in the context of surveying the scholarly landscape for new and important avenues of investigation. Offering much new content, this volume features internationally renowned scholars addressing such compelling topics as uncertainty and secrecy in relationships; the role of negotiating self in cyberspace; criticism and complaints; teasing and bullying; infidelity and relational transgressions; revenge; and adolescent physical aggression toward parents. The chapters are organized thematically and offer a range of perspectives from both junior scholars and seasoned academics. By posing questions at the micro and macro levels, The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication draws closer to a perspective in which the darker sides and brighter sides of human experience are better integrated in theory and research. Appropriate for scholars, practitioners, and students in communication, social psychology, sociology, counseling, conflict, personal relationships, and related areas, this book is also useful as a text in graduate courses on interpersonal communication, ethics, and other special topics.
