Book The Runmakers

Download or read book The Runmakers written by Frederick E. Taylor and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics are the lifeblood of baseball. Managers pore over batting averages to determine game day lineups and batting orders; high number of runs batted in and low earned run averages receive praise from the press, higher salaries from the front office, and love from fans; and the fate of fantasy baseball players rises and falls with each statistical change. The prominence of the RC/27 and other more complex, formula-driven stats has made numbers even more important to understanding and appreciating the game. For all these baseball buffs and more, Frederick E. Taylor provides a new measure of hitting prowess that just might be a game changer. Taylor's potential runs per game (PRG) measure accounts for batters getting on base, advancing runners, and driving in runs, and it separates leadoff and second batters from those in the middle of the order. Taylor introduces the measure, explains how it works, and applies it to players past and present. He breaks the history of major league baseball into eight eras based on differences in runs scored per game. He systematically—player-by-player and position-by-position—compares the results of the PRG measure to those drawn from other statistics, such as on-base percentage and slugging average. Taylor shows that PRG is more accurate and that career clutch hitting is a myth. Sabermetricians, baseball fans of all stripes, and anyone who earns a living from the sport will find a wealth of information and a whole new set of stats to obsess over in The Runmakers. Measuring baseball will never be the same.

Book College Baseball Recruitment

Download or read book College Baseball Recruitment written by Jacob Koch and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College Baseball Recruitment: Beating the Odds is a guide to getting noticed by college coaches, earning your way on to a college baseball team, and succeeding at that college level. The author's first hand experience climbing the high school and college ranks is shown in this passionate, coarse, and straight forward account of how to get into college baseball. Any parent or player who has ever dreamed of playing baseball after high school and has no idea where to start in the process of recruitment should consider reading this manual. Told from the perspective of the athlete it is the first book of its kind to show the struggle of the athlete from the athlete's eyes. Other books written by scouts and coaches show the recruitment process from their angle often giving the reader minimal insight, but this book tells the story from all angles; the eyes of the player, the eyes of the coach, and the eyes of the scout.

The second edition of Teaching Statistics follows the same structure as the first edition, where the case studies and exercises have been replaced by modern players and teams, and the new types of baseball data from the PitchFX system and fangraphs.com are incorporated into the text.

Book Relationship of First Pitch Strikes to on Base Average in Baseball

Download or read book Relationship of First Pitch Strikes to on Base Average in Baseball written by Hal Thomas De Berry and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a relationship between first pitch strikes and on base average in community college baseball. The study sought to collect data under game conditions in order to determine if a pitcher gained any appreciable advantage over a hitter by throwing the first pitch in the count for a strike. Data was gathered through the experimental method of applied research. Eighteen Community Colleges of Spokane pitchers, and fifty-five pitchers playing for teams that opposed Community Colleges of Spokane, ranging in age from 18-22 years old were monitored. Each time during the 1989-90 seasons (84 games) a Spokane pitcher faced a hitter during a scheduled game, the first pitch was recorded, as was the result of the batter's appearance. For the opposing teams, data was collected in the same manner over the 1990 season (41 games). Data were compiled and tabulated in an effort to calculate on base averages after the first pitch was thrown to a hitter. Additionally, statistical analyses were performed for first pitch batting averages, first pitch bases on balls and percentage of strikes thrown on the first pitch. Comparisons were made between Spokane and its opponents, and the data were combined and analyzed together, using correlational and descriptive statistical techniques"--Document.

Book In Pursuit of the College Baseball Scholarship

Download or read book In Pursuit of the College Baseball Scholarship written by Sean L. Collins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Casey loves baseball. Even before the child was born, his father knew that the kid was going to be a baseball player and prepared a nursery theme of baby blue walls with baseball angels in the form of porcelain dolls, framed pictures, and the new Big Head poster of Cal Ripken Jr.; his Dad's favorite Major League player on the wall. Two years later, Casey loves baseball and everyone realizes it. He knows exactly what to do with that little plastic bat and ball his father so anxiously waited to get for him. Every night, when Casey's father comes home from work, it's "Game Time!" They play ball in the living room, watch their favorite big league team on the big screen with surround sound for a better "learning experience," with a side order of Baseball Tonight on ESPN. Finally, the two finish the night talking about baseball and dad hopefully believing that his little Casey will dream of making the big play or hitting the big home run; Casey at the plate...right? Parents, do you know what to do next? In Pursuit of the College Baseball Scholarship is a book of wisdom and insight on how to pursue a college baseball scholarship from the perspective of a coach who has been there and done it well.

Book Kinematic Differences Between Baseball Batting Training Conditions in Collegiate Players Using Statistical Parametric Mapping

Download or read book Kinematic Differences Between Baseball Batting Training Conditions in Collegiate Players Using Statistical Parametric Mapping written by Devin Jeffrey Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitting a baseball is a complicated task that is trained and studied under simplified conditions due to the practical limitations of using live pitchers. For this reason, current literature is lacking in studies that provide an interpretation of results under a game-like context, and hitters continue to train under non-ideal situations. Statistical techniques and non-standardized measurements have further limited their interpretability. These limitations are addressed by examining selected kinematics during the swing from four common training methods using Statistical Parametric Mapping. Players hit off a tee, a batting practice pitcher, a robotic pitching machine, and a live pitcher. The robotic pitching machine was made as life-like as possible to simulate a live pitcher. Kinematics of the lead and rear elbow and knee joints, pelvis, trunk, and bat were measured during the swing, and a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA test using Statistical Parametric Mapping was performed for each normalized kinematic signal. Most differences occurred between hitting off a tee and a live pitcher. Few differences were seen between hitting off the tee and robotic pitching machine, and the batting practice pitcher and robotic pitching machine. Surprisingly, many differences were observed between the robotic pitching machine and the live pitcher. These results suggest that no two training methods are equivalent for all hitters, as different results in at least a few kinematic variables will be observed. Additionally, hitters' behavior while hitting off the robotic pitching machine was not the same as a live pitcher, indicating that the robotic pitching machine is not an analogous training method to a live pitcher. For the most important outcome, bat velocity, hitters produced similar results during the three pitched ball conditions, which was slower than hitting off a tee. Researchers, hitters, trainers, and coaches should be aware of the condition that the data was collected under so that it can be properly interpreted and disseminated. Additionally, hitting off a live pitcher still appears to be the only way to achieve similar behavior from hitters. Finally, Statistical Parametric Mapping is a promising tool, but it also has limitations.

Book A Comparison of Batting Averages of Major League Baseball Players Among Three Combination Pitch Counts

Download or read book A Comparison of Batting Averages of Major League Baseball Players Among Three Combination Pitch Counts written by Lun-Hsu Ching and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The study was designed to determine differences in the batting averages of Major League Baseball (MLB) players among behind counts (0-1, 0-2, and 1-2), ahead counts (1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 2-1, 3-1, and 3-2), and even counts (0-0, 1-1, and2-2) in the 2004 MLB regular season. The data were collected from the official web site of the MLB 2004 regular season. A data-recording sheet was used to collect the game data and 60 games were recorded for the data analyses. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed to determine if differences in batting average existed among behind counts, ahead counts, and even counts. Significant (p .05) mean differences in batting averages were found among behind, ahead, and even counts. The Tukey HSD post hoc test was used to further examine the differences in batting averages among behind, ahead, and even counts. No significant (p .05) differences in mean batting average were found when comparing ahead counts and even counts. Differences in mean batting averages of behind counts and ahead counts, and behind counts and even counts were significant (p
