Book The Relationship Between Broad and Narrow Personality Traits and Change of Academic Major

Download or read book The Relationship Between Broad and Narrow Personality Traits and Change of Academic Major written by Nancy A. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and academic major change in two samples of college undergraduates. Utilizing a field study design, a total number of 859 undergraduates completed an online inventory that included the "Big Five" and other -related, narrow personality traits, as well as academic major change and various demographic variables. A number of expected and unexpected findings emerged. As hypothesized, the traits of Sense of Identity and Extraversion were significantly and negatively related to decisions to change major, but only for certain grade levels. Contrary to expectations, Career Decidedness and Optimism were significantly and positively related to academic major change across groups, regardless of class ranking. When parsing the data by college year, additional and significant relationships appeared. Extraversion and Sense of Identity were positively related to academic major change among freshmen, sophomores and seniors, which was a significant and unexpected finding. Conscientiousness, and Emotional Stability were unrelated to academic major change overall, but were significantly and positively related to students changing major at least one time. Among non-directional hypotheses, Work Drive was negatively associated with academic major change across all groups, as well as among juniors and sophomores. Openness was both positively (sophomores) and negatively (juniors) related to major change. A final analysis that looked at students who changed majors two or more times, both Self-directed Learning and Work Drive significantly and positively correlated with the dependent variable. Both Career Decidedness and Optimism increased the odds of being a major changer in a logistic regression analysis of a residence hall sample. Implications for career planning and advising are discussed, along with future research recommendations.

Book The Malleability of Intellectual Styles

Download or read book The Malleability of Intellectual Styles written by Li-fang Zhang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectual styles are individuals' preferred ways of using the abilities that they possess. The extent to which one can change his or her intellectual style is a question of interest to both researchers and the general public. This book presents the first comprehensive and systematic review of existing research on the malleability of intellectual styles. By critically analyzing research findings derived from both cross-sectional and longitudinal investigations performed over the past seven decades, Li-fang Zhang demonstrates that intellectual styles can be modified through both socialization and purposeful training. Professor Zhang elucidates the heuristic value of these findings for the development of adaptive intellectual styles in both academic and non-academic settings. She proposes further avenues of research that might advance scholarly understanding of the nature of and the potential for modifying intellectual styles.

Book Personality Major Choice Undergraduate Retention

Download or read book Personality Major Choice Undergraduate Retention written by Allison Centofanti and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holland (1959) developed scales to measure vocational paths based on students' personality traits. The current study looks further into how the big five personality traits (Koseoglu, 2016) impact vocational choices based on Hollands' vocational scale (RIASEC). Intention to persist based on academic satisfaction and fit were also variables analyzed throughout this study. A survey was used to collect data on personality types among various majors at a single urban research institution in Northeast Ohio. The survey also included environmental fit measures regarding students' academic satisfaction and fit, and whether this predicted intention to persist. Results showed that some personality types were correlated with specific vocational interests. If a personality type was positively correlated with a vocational choice, it could be more likely a student would choose majors within that vocational path. If a personality type was negatively correlated with a vocational choice, that student may not be as likely to choose a major within that vocational path. It was also found that students were more likely to persist within their major if they felt satisfied both academically and environmentally within their major.

Book The Effects of Educational Backgrounds on Relationship Between Personality and Knowledge Retention of First Courses

Download or read book The Effects of Educational Backgrounds on Relationship Between Personality and Knowledge Retention of First Courses written by Takeshi Nishii and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between student personality based on the Five Factors model, the extent to which they retained learning outcomes of a first course in accounting after completing the course, and their educational backgrounds (major at university, graduates of commercial high schools, and attendance to private preparatory schools for qualification examinations concerning accounting and bookkeeping). Data were collected from 121 students at two universities. The results found no significant direct relationships between the five personality traits and the extent to which learning outcomes were retained (i.e., academic performance). In addition, the effect of combined traits on performance was limited. However, some traits significantly influenced performance depending on educational background. This study contributes to knowledge on the complex relationship between academic performance, personality, and educational background. This study also contributes methodologically to prior literature by measuring personality and academic performance using new measures.

Book A Longitudinal Analysis Using Auxiliary Information to Model Retention in Undergraduate Students

Download or read book A Longitudinal Analysis Using Auxiliary Information to Model Retention in Undergraduate Students written by LaKendra Miranda Peoples-McAfee and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attrition is an issue for colleges and universities, and attempts to retain students are becoming more and more difficult. This study focuses on predicting student attrition of first time incoming (FTIC) students over a long time period. The population of this study consists of all FTIC students from Fall 2001. The students were followed 3.5 academic years to observe whether they experienced attrition. Exploratory data analysis was conducted to examine existing independent variables and some variables that were created to determine their contribution to the model. A discrete time hazard method was used to measure the timing of event occurrence. Cumulative GPA after one semester, number of major changes, major type, and minority status were selected to be included the model. Cross-validation was performed on Fall 2002 FTIC students to assess model fit. Overall, the model did a great job of predicting attrition of students over the long term.
