Book The relationship of job characteristics and professional commitment among public health nurses

Download or read book The relationship of job characteristics and professional commitment among public health nurses written by Emily Jane C. Filler and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of work have a profound influence on job-related outcomes including professional commitment. Accordingly, commitment to the profession can be seen as a stabilizing force that maintains behavioral direction. The objective of the paper was to determine the relationship between public health nurses' perception of their job characteristics: skill variety, feedback, task significance autonomy and task identity and professional commitment: affective, normative, continuance commitment. Using a predictive, correlational, non-experimental, quantitative research design, two major questions were answered: What is the level of job characteristics and professional commitment as perceived by the respondents? What is the relationship of job characteristics and professional commitment among public health nurses? The total enumeration of public health nurses (N=95) in one of the provinces in Southern Tagalog were the respondents, however, only 88 participants completed the questionnaire, yielding a 92.6% response rate. Respondent's Data Sheet, Professional Commitment Scale and Job Design Survey that were validated by experts and pilot tested for reliability (a=0.7803 for job design survey and a=0.8273 for professional commitment scale) were utilized for data collection. Following approval of the UST Graduate School Ethics Review Committee, informed consent was given to the respondents prior to participation in the study. Descriptive statistics such as means, standard deviation, frequency and percentage were applied. In order to determine relationships among variables, simple linear regression was used. Results demonstrated a high degree of job characteristics of public health nurses except for the moderate result on task identity. Likewise, professional commitment of public health nurses was high, the continuance dimension of professional commitment was moderate. Findings also showed that job characteristics: skill variety, task significance, autonomy, feedback from the job and feedback from agents had significant relationship with overall professional commitment (p=0.007, p=0.001, p=0.000, p=0.002, p=.018, respectively). Results also revealed that dimensions of job characteristics are important factors that are related to nurses' commitment to their profession. Results of the study could be used to foster improvement in public health nurses' commitment by refining their job characteristics.
