Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between personal characteristics of public school principals and school leadership autonomy. Additionally, it sought to determine if there was a relationship between school locale of public school principals and school leadership autonomy. Gender, race, age, salary, educational attainment, and school locale served as control variables. This study utilized the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) 1993--1994 data to examine the relationship between school leadership autonomy and personal characteristics of public school principals in the United States. The study sample consisted of 9,098 public school principals; 72 percent male and 28 percent female. Cross-tabulation, chi square, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey Honestly Significance Difference Test were used to examine the relationship between the key study variables. Findings from this study indicated that there is a relationship between personal characteristics of principals and school leadership autonomy. In addition, there is also a relationship between school locale and school leadership autonomy. Female principals reported a greater degree of school leadership autonomy than their male counterparts. Principals who are Asian and Pacific Islanders reported a greater degree of school leadership autonomy than whites, blacks, and American Indians or Alaska Natives, respectively. Principals in the age range of 30 to 39 reported a greater degree of school leadership autonomy than principals 40 and above and under 30 years old, respectively. Principals in the salary range of {dollar}49,000 and above reported a greater degree of school leadership autonomy than those in salary ranges of {dollar}32,000 to {dollar}48,000. A master's degree is significantly associated with school leadership autonomy. A bachelor's degree is not significantly associated with school leadership autonomy. Principals located at schools in the urban fringe of large/mid size cities reported a greater degree of school leadership autonomy than in other locales. Results of this study have implications for educational administrators, policy makers, and other leaders interested in the recruitment, retention, and professional development of public school principals. -- Abstract.

The rhetoric of standards and vouchers has occupied center stage, polarizing public opinion and affording little room for reflection on the intangible conditions that make for good schools. Trust in Schools engages this debate with a compelling examination of the importance of social relationships in the successful implementation of school reform. Over the course of three years, Bryk and Schneider, together with a diverse team of other researchers and school practitioners, studied reform in twelve Chicago elementary schools. Each school was undergoing extensive reorganization in response to the Chicago School Reform Act of 1988, which called for greater involvement of parents and local community leaders in their neighborhood schools. Drawing on years longitudinal survey and achievement data, as well as in-depth interviews with principals, teachers, parents, and local community leaders, the authors develop a thorough account of how effective social relationships—which they term relational trust—can serve as a prime resource for school improvement. Using case studies of the network of relationships that make up the school community, Bryk and Schneider examine how the myriad social exchanges that make up daily life in a school community generate, or fail to generate, a successful educational environment. The personal dynamics among teachers, students, and their parents, for example, influence whether students regularly attend school and sustain their efforts in the difficult task of learning. In schools characterized by high relational trust, educators were more likely to experiment with new practices and work together with parents to advance improvements. As a result, these schools were also more likely to demonstrate marked gains in student learning. In contrast, schools with weak trust relations saw virtually no improvement in their reading or mathematics scores. Trust in Schools demonstrates convincingly that the quality of social relationships operating in and around schools is central to their functioning, and strongly predicts positive student outcomes. This book offer insights into how trust can be built and sustained in school communities, and identifies some features of public school systems that can impede such development. Bryk and Schneider show how a broad base of trust across a school community can provide a critical resource as education professional and parents embark on major school reforms. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of principal leadership characteristics and behaviors on teacher's perceptions of self and collective efficacy at three career stages. Forty-six teachers from six school buildings within a single southeastern Pennsylvania school district participated in the study. Multiple data collection instruments were utilized to provide qualitative data on teacher perceptions of personal and collective efficacy relative to their perceptions of their principal's leadership and their career stage. The researcher found that schools in which teachers had positive perceptions of their principal also exhibited stronger collective efficacy perceptions. The research also revealed that teachers' personal efficacy perceptions were sometimes situational and impacted directly through feedback from their principals and indirectly through their principals' leadership behaviors.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the high school principals’ use of power and teacher’s self-perception of professionalism. Seven bases of power were explored during this study: (a) reward power, (b) coercive power, (c) legitimate power, (d) referent power, (e) expert power, (f) information power, and (g) connection power. Four dimensions of professionalism were identified as subscales and were: (a) personal characteristics, (b) commitment to change and continuous improvement, (c) subject and pedagogical knowledge, and (d) activities beyond the classroom. The quantitative study combined two data collection tools, the Power Perception Profile – Perception of Other and the Teacher Professionalism Inventory-Self, to provide opportunity for teachers to describe their current perceptions of their principals’ use of power and their self-perception of professionalism. While no relationships were identified as being statistically significant, findings did suggest that teachers’ self-perception of professionalism was both directly and inversely related to the principals’ use of power. Principals who understand how their use of power grows or hinders their teacher’s sense of professionalism equips them with the necessary tools to foster professional development that is both positive and beneficial to the teachers.

Given the problems of inadequate quality in most secondary schools due to poor infrastructure and insufficient and poorly equipped teachers, the need for addressing the professional education of secondary teachers acquires great importance. The education of teachers should be such that teachers should set an example and provide for their pupils the ideal of the citizens who is conformist, conservative and cautions. As for their moral character, righteousness, wisdom, honesty are among the adjectives which might be ascribed to them. Teachers should assist the students in their physical, intellectual, religious, social, emotional, spiritual development in the well balanced and harmonious manner and imbue them with human values, which is why teacher education today is an integral part of any educational system. In this study, personality traits of teachers will be analyzed in conjunction with their teaching effectiveness, in order to reach a better understanding of what makes a good teacher, and how to educate him to satisfy the rising demand of the Indian society.
