Book The Correlation Between Perceived Parenting Styles and Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

Download or read book The Correlation Between Perceived Parenting Styles and Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety written by Treasure Idamkue and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting style has long been associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety in adults. This has led researchers and clinicians to search for variables that: 1) mediate or moderate the relationship between parenting style and later symptoms of depression and anxiety and 2) can be used in clinical interventions. The current study investigated whether cognitive emotion regulation strategies and executive dysfunction can moderate the relationship between perceived parenting style and later symptoms of depression and anxiety. This study was conducted using a correlational design to test for moderation. There were 103 participants in this study and each participant completed questionnaires that inquired about their perception of their parents’ parenting style, their utilization of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, their levels of executive functioning, and their current symptoms of depression and anxiety. It was found that there is a relationship between perceived authoritative parenting and the executive function of motivation and adult ADHD. It was also discovered that perceived permissive parenting has an association with the cognitive emotion regulation strategies of refocus on planning and other-blame. Perceived authoritarian parenting has a negative association with refocus on planning. A significant correlation between executive dysfunction and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress was found. The results provide great insight into the negative effects of authoritarian parenting on adulthood executive functioning as well as insight into the relationship between executive dysfunction and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in college students.

Book Depression in Parents Parenting and Children

Download or read book Depression in Parents Parenting and Children written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book The Effect of Parenting Styles on Depression Among College Students

Download or read book The Effect of Parenting Styles on Depression Among College Students written by Manpreet Kaur and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, during the past few decades have found there to be an association between parenting styles and levels of depression in children, adolescents, and adults. In the current study, the effects of parenting styles on depression among college students was targeted. This current study predicted that: 1. Females will show greater levels of depression than males. 2. Asians will show increased levels of depression. 3. Participants with authoritarian parents will exhibit significantly higher levels of depression as compared to authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles. In addition to these, additional exploratory analyses were also conducted. Two hundred eighty-eight college undergraduates participated. There were two hundred thirty-one females and fifty-seven males. Participants retrospectively completed questionnaires about parental bonding in childhood and answered questions about current levels of depression and anxiety. There were no significant differences in level of depression reported by men versus women. Results showed Asians experience higher levels of depression than other ethnicities. However, there was no overall significant difference in young adults with authoritarian parents exhibiting higher levels of depression as compared to levels of depression in students who described their parents as having an authoritative, permissive or uninvolved parenting styles for father/male guardian.

Abstract: Adolescent Anxiety and Depression in Hong Kong 1 Abstract The present study examined the relationships between perceived parental style and symptoms of depression and anxiety among adolescents in Hong Kong, and tested whether these relations were mediated by cognitive style. It was hypothesized that negative cognitive style would mediate the relationship between perceived parental style with characteristics of low care and over control and depressive and anxiety symptoms among adolescents. Participants consisted of a community sample of 297 Chinese adolescents aged 12-16 years. They completed a set of self-report measures assessing their perception of parenting style, cognitions relating to depressive and anxious thoughts, and their current depressive and anxiety symptoms. Multiple regression analyses were performed, and the results provided support for the mediating effect of cognitive style on the relationship between perceived parental style and depressive and anxiety symptoms among adolescents in Hong Kong. Results also showed evidence of cognitive content-specificity that thoughts on personal failure were predictive for depressive symptoms and thoughts on social threat were predictive for anxiety symptoms in adolescents. Book The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles and College Sophomores Independence

Download or read book The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles and College Sophomores Independence written by Molly M. Depew and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the first to second year of college can be a challenging time for college students and one that calls for increased independence. Extensive research exists on Baumrind's four parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and negligent) but not in relation to independence in college. This study examined the relationship between perceived parenting styles and four factors of independence (social competence, autonomy, locus of control, and executive functioning) in a sample of college sophomores. Results showed no significant difference in independence scores among parenting style groups. Limitations of the findings may be related to reliability and/or validity of the study's measures, or use of only one construct of parenting styles. Additionally, the researcher posits that personality may play a larger role in student independence than initially hypothesized. Implications for future research are discussed.

Book Authoritative Parenting

Download or read book Authoritative Parenting written by Robert E. Larzelere and published by Amer Psychological Assn. This book was released on 2013 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist Diana Baumrind's revolutionary prototype of parenting, called authoritative parenting, combines the best of various parenting styles. In contrast to previously advocated styles involving high responsiveness and low demandingness (i.e., permissive parenting) or low responsiveness and high demandingness (i.e., authoritarian parenting), authoritative parenting involves high levels of both responsiveness and demandingness. The result is an appropriate mix of warm nurturance and firm discipline. Decades of research have supported the prototype, and we now know that authoritative parenting fosters high achievement, emotional adjustment, self-reliance, and social confidence in children and adolescents. In this book, leading scholars update our thinking about authoritative parenting and address three unresolved issues: mechanisms of the style's effectiveness, variations of effectiveness across cultures, and untangling how parents influence children from how children influence them. By integrating perspectives from developmental and clinical psychology, the book will inform prevention and intervention efforts to help parents maximise their children's potential.

Book Perceived Parenting Emotion Regulation and Adult Depression

Download or read book Perceived Parenting Emotion Regulation and Adult Depression written by Lauren van Huisstede and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies have established a link between parenting style (e.g. authoritarian, authoritative, permissive) and depression in children and adolescents. Parenting factors are also implicated in the development of emotion regulation. There is a gap in the literature, however, concerning perceptions of parenting in relation to adult depression. The current study examined the effect of parenting on reported adult depressive symptoms. Of interest was the role of emotion regulation strategies in this relationship. Participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk, and the sample consisted of 302 adults (125 males, 177 females) ranging in age from 18 to 65. Measures of how participants were parented by their mothers and fathers, emotion regulation strategies most frequently utilized, and current depressive symptoms were collected using an online survey. The emotion regulation strategy, positive reappraisal, was found to moderate the relation between maternal authoritative parenting and depression. Permissive parenting was also significantly predictive of depression, but catastrophizing fully mediated only the relation between maternal permissive parenting and depressive symptoms. Authoritarian parenting was unrelated to depression and emotion regulation in this study. The findings of this study indicate that the effects of how an individual was parented may persist into adulthood. Implications of these findings and future directions for further research are discussed.
