Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopter parents—the kind that continue to hover even in college—are one of the most ridiculed figures of twenty-first-century parenting, criticized for creating entitled young adults who boomerang back home. But do involved parents really damage their children and burden universities? In this book, sociologist Laura T. Hamilton illuminates the lives of young women and their families to ask just what role parents play during the crucial college years. Hamilton vividly captures the parenting approaches of mothers and fathers from all walks of life—from a CFO for a Fortune 500 company to a waitress at a roadside diner. As she shows, parents are guided by different visions of the ideal college experience, built around classed notions of women’s work/family plans and the ideal age to “grow up.” Some are intensively involved and hold adulthood at bay to cultivate specific traits: professional helicopters, for instance, help develop the skills and credentials that will advance their daughters’ careers, while pink helicopters emphasize appearance, charm, and social ties in the hopes that women will secure a wealthy mate. In sharp contrast, bystander parents—whose influence is often limited by economic concerns—are relegated to the sidelines of their daughter’s lives. Finally, paramedic parents—who can come from a wide range of class backgrounds—sit in the middle, intervening in emergencies but otherwise valuing self-sufficiency above all. Analyzing the effects of each of these approaches with clarity and depth, Hamilton ultimately argues that successfully navigating many colleges and universities without involved parents is nearly impossible, and that schools themselves are increasingly dependent on active parents for a wide array of tasks, with intended and unintended consequences. Altogether, Parenting to a Degree offers an incisive look into the new—and sometimes problematic—relationship between students, parents, and universities.

Book Parenting Effects on Self Efficacy and Self Esteem in Late Adolescence and How Those Factors Impact Adjustment to College

Download or read book Parenting Effects on Self Efficacy and Self Esteem in Late Adolescence and How Those Factors Impact Adjustment to College written by Gregory J. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately three months before starting college, 203 high school seniors completed a questionnaire consisting of the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) assessing their parents' parenting styles. The PAQ yielded scores on three parenting styles originally proposed by Baumrind (1971): authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Two weeks after starting college the students completed a questionnaire consisting of the Dundee Relocation Inventory assessing degree of homesickness and the Tests of Reactions and Adaptations to College assessing adjustment to college. Authoritarian parents had students with lower self-esteem and self-efficacy, while authoritative parents had students with higher self-esteem and self-efficacy. There was no relationship between permissiveness in parents and the students' levels of self-esteem or self-efficacy. Students higher in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced less homesickness and showed better emotional and behavioral adjustment to college. Conversely, students lower in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced more homesickness and had a more difficult adjustment to college. (Contains 6 figures.).

Book Relationship of Parent Academic Socialization to Academic Success Among First Generation College Students

Download or read book Relationship of Parent Academic Socialization to Academic Success Among First Generation College Students written by Aubrey L. Pellicano and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that First Generation College Students (FGCS) have lower rates of college degree attainment than their continuing generation peers. Many of these students face challenges navigating social, academic, financial, and administrative domains when working toward a post-secondary degree. Academic self-efficacy (ASE) is an important predictor of academic success in college. Research suggests that parents can influence ASE through parent academic socialization (PAS), which includes academic expectations set by the parents (PAE), parent academic advice (PAA), and parental attitudes about education (PEA). The current study sought to examine the influence of PAS on ASE in FGCS and its subsequent effect on academic success. Responses were collected from over 250 FGCS at two universities in California using an online survey. It was hypothesized that PAS would predict GPA and that ASE would mediate this relationship. The mediation analyses were not significant. However, PAE as well as ASE did significantly predict GPA. PAA and PEA predicted ASE, which is promising for improving academic outcomes among FGCS. Future studies in this area could benefit from using a longitudinal research design and the literature as a whole could benefit from using more common methods of measurement across studies. Future research in this area has the potential to expand understanding of how parent factors may impact college student success and to inform parent-based interventions for supporting academic achievement.

Book The Relationship Between Parenting Styles Learning Autonomy and Scholastic Achievement in Undergraduate College Students

Download or read book The Relationship Between Parenting Styles Learning Autonomy and Scholastic Achievement in Undergraduate College Students written by Meghan L. Starr and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child's academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student's learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants' parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students' own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study; however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

Book Investigating Parenting Style and College Student Grit at a Private Mid sized New England University

Download or read book Investigating Parenting Style and College Student Grit at a Private Mid sized New England University written by Kelly M. Dunn and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has experienced an increase in parent engagement in the lives of college students (Arnett, 2014). Recognizing the presence of families, researchers have investigated the relationship between parenting style and college success variables such as academic performance (Miller & Speirs Neumeister, 2017), wellness (Coccia & Darling, 2017), and transition (Love & Thomas, 2014). In recent literature, studies have focused on grit and its relation to college success (Bowman et al., 2015; Duckworth et al., 2007); yet, research on the relationship between parenting style and grit is lacking. This quantitative correlational study investigated the relationship between college student self-report of grit (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009) and parenting style (Baumrind, 1971b). The study was guided by the following research questions: 1. Is there a relationship between parenting style and college student grit? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style explain the variance in grit? 2. Is there a relationship among parenting style, college student grit, and demographics? To what extent and in what manner does parenting style and demographics explain the variance in grit? Data were collected from undergraduate students (N = 974) through a questionnaire. The results revealed authoritative parenting was positively correlated (single r = .206, p = .003, ES = small/med; parent 1 r = .220, p
