Book The Relationship Between Mobility and Concentration for the Canadian Manufacturing Sector

Download or read book The Relationship Between Mobility and Concentration for the Canadian Manufacturing Sector written by Statistics Canada. Analytical Studies Branch and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the picture of the competitive process given by measures of market structure in contrast to measures of intra-industry mobility is investigated herein using principal component and canonical correlation analysis. The main dimension of concentration is related closely to the intensity of entry and exit. The other dimensions of concentration capture the importance of a secondary group of firms and are related to different aspects of intra-industry mobility such as continuing firm turnover. Using regression analysis, the paper finds that entry and exit is a significant determinant of concentration even after scale effects are considered.

Book Restructuring in the Canadian Manufacturing Sector from 1970 to 1990

Download or read book Restructuring in the Canadian Manufacturing Sector from 1970 to 1990 written by John Russel Baldwin and published by Analytical Studies Branch, Statistics Canada. This book was released on 1995 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the dynamics of job reallocation in the manufacturing sector of Canada. It does so by examining the pattern and magnitude of job gain, job loss, and total job turnover due to growth and decline of some firms, and entry and exit of other firms. It also investigates how the effect of cyclical as opposed to structural influences on job turnover have changed over time. Finally, the paper investigates whether the pattern and magnitude of job turnover differ across industries and across regions, and whether the differences are either caused by differences in cyclical sensitivity of job creation and job destruction or in the extent to which restructuring is taking place.

Book The Dynamics of Industrial Competition

Download or read book The Dynamics of Industrial Competition written by John R. Baldwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-13 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamics of Industrial Competition describes the internal dynamics of industries using new and unique longitudinal data that make it possible to track firms over time. It provides a comprehensive picture of a number of aspects of firm turnover in North America that arise from the competitive process - the entry and the exit of firms, the growth and the decline of incumbent firms, and the merger process. Instantaneous and cumulative measures of market dynamics are provided. Since the forces contributing to competition are varied and industries are affected by heterogeneous forces, different aspects of firm turnover are considered in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the competitive process. Entry is divided into that portion coming from the creation of new plants and that portion arising from the acquisition of existing firms. Differences are drawn between the effects of related and unrelated acquisitions and between the effects of take-overs made by domestic and foreign firms. Differences between large- and small-firm activity are also investigated. The effects of turnover on productivity, efficiency, wage rates, and profitability are extensively model led. Using various measures of firm turnover to proxy the amount of competition, the study examines and contextualizes the relationship between industry performance and the intensity of the competitive process.

Book What is Happening to Weekly Hours Worked in Canada

Download or read book What is Happening to Weekly Hours Worked in Canada written by René Morissette and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines whether the dispersion of (or inequality in) weekly hours worked has increased in Canada during the 1980s. Using data from the Labour Force Survey, this paper documents the magnitude and timing of the changes in dispersion of weekly hours which took place between September 1976 and September 1993. The paper considers inequality in weekly hours across individuals, by gender, and in the main job. It then documents in greater detail the decline of the relative importance of the standard workweek, disaggregating the data by age, educational level, gender, industry, and occupation. It also presents potential explanations for the growing dispersion of weekly hours.

Book Why Has Inequality in Weekly Earnings Increased in Canada

Download or read book Why Has Inequality in Weekly Earnings Increased in Canada written by René Morissette and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality in weekly earnings increased in Canada in the 1980s, in conjunction with a drop in real hourly wages of young workers, a fall in the percentage of employees working 35-40 hours per week in their main job, a rise in the fraction of employees working 50 hours per week or more, and a growing tendency for highly paid workers to work long workweeks. The paper examines the role of weekly hours of work and the correlation between hourly wage rates and weekly hours in explaining the rise of inequality in weekly earnings in Canada over the last decade. It also documents changes in the distribution of hourly wages, the growth in the dispersion of weekly hours of work, and the increase in the correlation between hourly wages and weekly hours. The paper concludes with a review of the possible factors behind the rise in weekly earnings inequality in Canada.

Book Alternative Measures of the Average Duration of Unemployment

Download or read book Alternative Measures of the Average Duration of Unemployment written by Miles Corak and published by Analytical Studies Branch, Statistics Canada. This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the robustness of a measure of the average complete duration of unemployment in Canada to a host of assumptions used in its derivation. In contrast to the average incomplete duration of unemployment, which is a lagging cyclical indicator, this statistic is a coincident indicator of the business cycle. The impact of using a steady state as opposed to a non steady state assumption, as well as the impact of various corrections for response bias are explored. It is concluded that a non steady state estimator would be a valuable compliment to the statistics on unemployment duration that are currently released by many statistical agencies, and particularly Statistics Canada.
