Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysias preferential policies have reduced the educational attainment gap between ethnic groups. However, we know less about their effects on ethnic differences in academic achievement. With this point in mind, the overall goal of this study is to examine inter-ethnic differences in mathematics and science achievement based on the cohort of eighth grade (Form 2) Malaysian students who participated in the Third International Mathematics and Sciences Study Repeat Project (TIMMS-R). It sought to determine the extent to which theoretical propositions of the structural and cultural perspectives developed to explain achievement differences in the United States are applicable in Malaysia. Malaysia is an interesting setting for the purpose of the present study for three reasons. First, the interethnic differences in educational outcomes were historically linked to occupational structure and class-and ethnicity-based residential segregation during the Brisish colonial rule. Second, Malaysia is one of the few countries (i.e. Fiji, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Uganda, India, and New Zealand) that have strong public policies to rectify the historical ethnic inequalities in access to education. However, the difference between Malaysia and these countries seems to be in the relative status of the formerly disadvantaged ethnic group in question. Finally, as a new member of the New Industrialized Countries (NICs), Malaysia is in the process of making the transition from an agricultural economy to an indutrialized nation. As such, the importance of mathematics and science education increases along with socioeconomic and technological advance and the discrepancies in mathematics and science achievement can have important implications on socioeconomic disparity among ethnic groups. The primary contribution of this dissertation is that it holistically examines how individual, family and school characteristics affect mathematics and science achievement of the eighth graders in Malaysia. Book Family Process Factors Self regulated Learning and English Academic Achievement in Selected Malaysian Secondary Schools

Download or read book Family Process Factors Self regulated Learning and English Academic Achievement in Selected Malaysian Secondary Schools written by Hadj Mahammed Bakir and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays students need to be self-regulated learners because of the complex nature of learning in the 21st classroom. However, neither students nor teachers can promote academic performance alone. Families, also, need to contribute in teaching and learning by providing positive family process factors (FPF). This study aims at examining the relationship between three main factors; Family Process Factors (FPF), Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), and English language achievement in three selected Malaysian secondary schools from the district of Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. The study sample includes 202 students who have been purposefully selected to respond to two surveys: Family Process Factors Questionnaire and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, as well as report their recent marks in English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. The path analysis technique, using AMOS data-fitting program and Sobel test of mediation, supported the hypothesized model by showing statistically significant path coefficients and fit indices. Primarily, it was found that FPF positively influences SRL. Secondly, SRL positively affects Achievement and, finally, SRL plays the role of mediator between FPF and Achievement. Thus, further interest in fostering SRL strategies among secondary school students should be paid by Malaysian parents in particular and educationists in general.

Download or read book Improving Medical Education written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-07-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughly half of all deaths in the United States are linked to behavioral and social factors. The leading causes of preventable death and disease in the United States are smoking, sedentary lifestyle, along with poor dietary habits, and alcohol consumption. To make measurable improvements in the health of Americans, physicians must be equipped with the knowledge and skills from the behavioral and social sciences needed to recognize, understand, and effectively respond to patients as individuals, not just to their symptoms. What are medical schools teaching students about the behavioral and social sciences? In the report, the committee concluded that there is inadequate information available to sufficiently describe behavioral and social science curriculum content, teaching techniques, and assessment methodologies in U.S. medical schools and recommends development of a new national behavioral and social science database. The committee also recommended that the National Board of Medical Examiners ensure that the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination adequately cover the behavioral and social science subject matter recommended in this report.
