Book The Relationship Between Leader Behavior Subordinate Satisfaction and Group Effectiveness at Three Levels Within the Company

Download or read book The Relationship Between Leader Behavior Subordinate Satisfaction and Group Effectiveness at Three Levels Within the Company written by B. S. Sterling and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between leader behavior, subordinate morale, and group performance was examined at three levels. Results showed that leaders at all three levels were perceived primarily in terms of task and interpersonal orientation. However, these two dimensions were highly related, probably in part due to response bias. Leaders' interpersonal orientation was more highly related to subordinates' satisfaction with the Army (and perhaps reenlistment intentions) than was leaders' task orientation at all three levels. Further, leaders' interpersonal orientation became more highly associated with subordinate morale (and perhaps performance) at higher levels within the company. These results were interpreted in terms of increasing leader influence at higher levels -- that is, because of leaders' increasing influence (power) at higher levels, a leaders' interpersonal orientation may have more impact on subordinates' outcomes, and hence on subordinates' morale and performance. Leaders' task orientation also seemed to become more highly associated with unit performance (as perceived by subordinates) at higher levels within the company. This finding was interpreted in terms of House's (1971) path goal model--that is, because of increasing job complexity and ambiguity at higher levels, a leader's task orientation may become more valuable in facilitating task performance at higher levels within the company. Originator-supplied keywords include: job satisfaction, unit effectiveness, and company-level leadership.

Book The Bass Handbook of Leadership

Download or read book The Bass Handbook of Leadership written by Bernard M. Bass and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 3273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thirty-three years and through three editions, Bass & Stogdill's Handbook of Leadership has been the indispensable bible for every serious student of leadership. Since the third edition came out in 1990, the field of leadership has expanded by an order of magnitude. This completely revised and updated fourth edition reflects the growth and changes in the study of leadership over the past seventeen years, with new chapters on transformational leadership, ethics, presidential leadership, and executive leadership. Throughout the Handbook, the contributions from cognitive social psychology and the social, political, communications, and administrative sciences have been expanded. As in the third edition, Bernard Bass begins with a consideration of the definitions and concepts used, and a brief review of some of the betterknown theories. Professor Bass then focuses on the personal traits, tendencies, attributes, and values of leaders and the knowledge, intellectual competence, and technical skills required for leadership. Next he looks at leaders' socioemotional talents and interpersonal competencies, and the differences in these characteristics in leaders who are imbued with ideologies, especially authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, and self-aggrandizement. A fuller examination of the values, needs, and satisfactions of leaders follows, and singled out for special attention are competitiveness and the preferences for taking risks. In his chapters on personal characteristics, Bass examines the esteem that others generally accord to leaders as a consequence of the leaders' personalities. The many theoretical and research developments about charisma over the past thirty years are crucial and are explored here in depth. Bass has continued to develop his theory of transformational leadership -- the paradigm of the last twenty years -- and he details how it makes possible the inclusion of a much wider range of phenomena than when theory and modeling are limited to reinforcement strategies. He also details the new incarnations of transformational leadership since the last edition. Bass has greatly expanded his consideration of women and racial minorities, both of whom are increasingly taking on leadership roles. A glossary is included to assist specialists in a particular academic discipline who may be unfamiliar with terms used in other fields. Business professors and students, executives in every industry, and politicians at all levels have relied for years on the time-honored guidance and insight afforded by the Handbook.

Book Fundamentals of Organizational Behavior

Download or read book Fundamentals of Organizational Behavior written by Andrew J. DuBrin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Organizational Behavior: An Applied Perspective, Second Edition examines the behavior of people in organizations. Topics covered range from political maneuvering in organizations (office politics) to the stresses facing people in managerial and professional positions. A conceptual framework for organizational behavior is presented, along with numerous case illustrations and examples from live organizational settings. This monograph consists of 14 chapters and opens with an introduction to organizational behavior and how it is influenced by principles of human behavior. The three main subareas or schools of management thought are discussed, together with the difference between knowledge work and non-knowledge work; how research and theory contribute to an understanding of organizational behavior; and the distinction between structure and process. The following chapters explore how the meaning of work relates to work motivation, as well as the link between work motivation and job performance; behavioral aspects of decision making; stresses in managerial and professional life; and political maneuvering in organizations. Small group behavior, leadership styles, and interpersonal communications are also considered, along with intergroup conflict and organizational effectiveness. This book will be of interest to students, managers, and staff specialists, as well as behavioral scientists and management theorists.

Book Leadership and Organizational Outcomes

Download or read book Leadership and Organizational Outcomes written by Engin Karadağ and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of leadership on organizational outcomes and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret leadership literature and suggest new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the editors compile various studies examining the relationship between the leadership and thirteen organizational outcomes separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.
