Book Thomas Hardy and the Survivals of Time

Download or read book Thomas Hardy and the Survivals of Time written by Andrew Radford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic exploration of Thomas Hardy's imaginative assimilation of particular Victorian sciences, this study draws on and swells the widening current of scholarly attention now being paid to the cultural meanings compacted and released by the nascent 'sciences of man' in the nineteenth century. Andrew Radford here situates Hardy's fiction and poetry in a context of the new sciences of humankind that evolved during the Victorian age to accommodate an immense range of literal and figurative 'excavations' then taking place. Combining literary close readings with broad historical analyses, he explores Hardy's artistic response to geological, archaeological and anthropological findings. In particular, he analyzes Hardy's lifelong fascination with the doctrine of 'survivals,' a term coined by E.B. Tylor in Primitive Culture (1871) to denote customs, beliefs and practices persisting in isolation from their original cultural context. Radford reveals how Hardy's subtle reworking of Tylor's doctrine offers a valuable insight into the inter-penetration of science and literature during this period. An important aspect of Radford's research focuses on lesser known periodical literature that grew out of a British amateur antiquarian tradition of the nineteenth century. His readings of Hardy's literary notebooks disclose the degree to which Hardy's own considerable scientific knowledge was shaped by the middlebrow periodical press. Thus Thomas Hardy and the Survivals of Time raises questions not only about the reception of scientific ideas but also the creation of nonspecialist forms of scientific discourse. This book represents a genuinely new perspective for Hardy studies.

Book Breeches and Metaphysics

Download or read book Breeches and Metaphysics written by S. S. Prawer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study traces the successive stages of Thackeray's contact with the German world and analyses the discourse he developed as a result. The author is concerned with the fiction and criticism of Thackeray's :Paris Sketch Book"" and the impressions related by the cockney traveller in ""Irish Sketch Book"" and ""Notes of a Journey from Cornhill to Grand Cairo"". Thackeray's own pictorial illustrations of his writings and those by Cruikshank, Doyle and Walker, which he supervised and supplemented, are recognized as an integral part of his German discourse. The study is a chronological one, setting Thackeray's construction of ""German"" and ""the Germans"" against the background of his own development and of the social, industrial, cultural and political history of Britain and its continental neighbours."

Book Editing Nineteenth Century Fiction

Download or read book Editing Nineteenth Century Fiction written by Jane Millgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this collection of papers, first presented at the thirteenth annual Conference on Editorial Problems in 1977, focuses on the editing of nineteenth-century fiction. Four of the papers are devoted to single authors – Dickens, Thackeray, Hardy and Zola – while the fifth takes its principle examples from Hawthorne, Twain and Crane. Looking at a range of works from English, American and French literature, this volume demonstrates the number of different attitudes that exist towards the editorial process as well as the different ambitions for the texts that scholars seek to produce. This book will be of interest to those studying and editing nineteenth-century literature.

Book Serials to Graphic Novels

Download or read book Serials to Graphic Novels written by Catherine J. Golden and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian illustrated book came into being, flourished, and evolved during the long nineteenth century. While existing scholarship on Victorian illustrators largely centers on the realist artists of the "Sixties," this volume examines the entire lifetime of the Victorian illustrated book. Catherine Golden offers a new framework for viewing the arc of this vibrant genre, arguing that it arose from and continually built on the creative vision of the caricature-style illustrators of the 1830s. She surveys the fluidity of illustration styles across serial installments, British and American periodicals, adult and children’s literature, and--more recently--graphic novels. Serials to Graphic Novels examines widely recognized illustrated texts, such as The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Rabbit, and Trilby. Golden explores factors that contributed to the early popularity of the illustrated book—the growth of commodity culture, a rise in literacy, new printing technologies—and that ultimately created a mass market for illustrated fiction. Golden identifies present-day visual adaptations of the works of Austen, Dickens, and Trollope as well as original Neo-Victorian graphic novels like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Victorian-themed novels like Batman: Noël as the heirs to the Victorian illustrated book. With these adaptations and additions, the Victorian canon has been refashioned and repurposed visually for new generations of readers.

Book Dickens Adapted

Download or read book Dickens Adapted written by John Glavin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their first appearance in print, Dickens's fictions immediately migrated into other media, and particularly, in his own time, to the stage. Since then Dickens has continuously, apparently inexhaustibly, functioned as the wellspring for a robust mini-industry, sourcing plays, films, television specials and series, operas, new novels and even miniature and model villages. If in his lifetime he was justly called 'The Inimitable', since his death he has become just the reverse: the Infinitely Imitable. The essays in this volume, all appearing within the past twenty years, cover the full spectrum of genres. Their major shared claim to attention is their break from earlier mimetic criteria - does the film follow the novel? - to take the new works seriously within their own generic and historical contexts. Collectively, they reveal an entirely 'other' Dickensian oeuvre, which ironically has perhaps made Dickens better known to an audience of non-readers than to those who know the books themselves.

This is not less true of the index which is both exhaustive and systematic, and which makes the book easy and pleasant to use. This is not a volume that will gather dust on library shelves."English Studies
