Nurse burnout is an alarming problem that greatly cripples the healthcare force by contributing to the nurse shortage, exhausting organizational resources, and ultimately resulting in less than optimum patient care. Additional research has shown that hardiness buffers the effects of stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of hardiness education on hardiness and burnout on registered nurses in an inpatient setting. A convenience sample (N=50) was recruited from a large metropolitan children's hospital in the South. A quasi-experimental pre-intervention/ post-intervention design was utilized. Participants were given pre-intervention instruments to measure burnout and hardiness: the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Personal Views Survey, an intervention of hardiness education, and post intervention Maslach Burnout Inventory and Personal Views Survey instruments. A paired t-test was used to analyze the differences in pre-intervention and post-intervention burnout and hardiness scores. According to the results of this study, as post-intervention hardiness levels increased, burnout levels decreased; thus supporting findings in literature that hardiness can mediate or buffer effects of stress and reduce burnout. Hardiness education in any healthcare setting could allow nurses to better adapt and handle the stresses and challenges of the healthcare arena. Incorporating hardiness principles into the organizational culture is a worthwhile endeavor for any healthcare facility.
