Book excerpt: This study investigated whether there were differences between gender, mathematics achievement, and student attitudes toward mathematics. This study also analyzed the relationships between achievement and attitude by gender. This study involved fifth grade students at a public school in North Dakota. Results showed no significant difference in gender in terms of achievement in mathematics but did show significant difference in one of three categories concerning the attitudes of the students toward mathematics. No relationship was demonstrated between achievement and attitude by gender. The author therefore concluded that mathematics achievement and attitude towards mathematics were not themselves dependent on gender.

In education, research suggests that student attitudes toward a subject lead to academic success (Royster, Harris, and Schoeps, 1999; Popham, 2005). Generally speaking, mathematics is a subject that is often disliked, motivating researchers to investigate how mathematics attitude affects mathematics learning. The topic for the study is "Sex difference in attitude towards the study of mathematics: A case study in some selected senior high schools in the cape coast metropolis." Reviewing the literature indicates that lot of work had been done in this area and in diverse ways. The target population for the study was all senior high schools form three students (SHS 3) in Ghana. However, within the limit of time and efficiency, the accessible population was made up of all SHS 3 students in the Cape Coast metropolis of Central Region. Under the categories of single sex female schools, single sex male schools and mixed sex schools, three schools were selected using the simple random sampling. For each school selected, the simple random sample was used to select 40 students. In all 120 students were selected for the study. Data for the study was collected by the use of a questionnaire. Several factors have influenced the undertaking of this project by the editors. First, an international volume focusing on gender and mathematics has not appeared since publication of papers emerging from the 1996 International Congress on Mathematical Education (Keitel, 1998). Surely it was time for an updated look at this critical area of mathematics education. Second, we have had lively discussion and working groups on gender issues at conferences of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education [PME] for the past four years, sessions at which stimulating and ground-breaking research has been discussed by participants from many different countries. Some publication seemed essential to share this new knowledge emerging from a wider variety of countries and from different cultural perspectives. Third, some western countries such as Australia and the USA have experienced in recent years a focus on the “boy problem,” with an underlying assumption that issues of females and mathematics have been solved and are no longer worthy of interest. Thus it seemed timely to look more closely at the issue of gender and mathematics internationally. When the idea for this volume first emerged, invitations were issued to those regularly attending the working and discussion groups at PME. Potential authors were charged to focus on gender issues in mathematics and were given wide scope to hone in on the issues that were central to their own research efforts, or were in receipt or in need of close attention in their own national or regional contexts.

Today there is enough empirical evidence showing the link between social origin and educational performance. The first chapter of this book shows how the social class, socio-economic status of family and parents' expectations about the academic development of their children influence in the educational performance. Chapter two focuses on the empirical literature regarding the relationship of the 65% instructional expenditure ratio, education production function, student achievement, and school district wealth. Chapter three dives into the aspects of executive functioning and its relation to academic achievement, as well as analyses the connection between the academic achievement and the perception the children have of their own executive functioning.
