Book A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between at Risk Student Achievement and Per Student Expenditure in Technology Instructional Resources and Professional Development

Download or read book A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between at Risk Student Achievement and Per Student Expenditure in Technology Instructional Resources and Professional Development written by Leanne Dorhout and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between expenditure for technology, instructional resource, and professional development and positively impacts at risk student achievement. The problem addressed was: Over three years, do variations in expenditures for technology, instructional resources, and curriculum and professional development relate to educational achievement for at risk students? Previous studies in the area of at risk student achievement and the relationship of technology have produced mixed results. The four research questions asked if per student technology, instructional resources, and curriculum and staff development expenditures relate to English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies at risk student achievement as measured by state accountability test. The population studied was Texas public school districts with high schools serving grades 9–12 who had three years of at risk student data in the state's academic excellence indicator system (AEIS) reports for the 2007–2008, 2008–2009, and 2009–2010 school years. The units of analysis for the study were data aggregated at the district level. The percentage of at risk students passing the state-mandated standardized exit level, eleventh grade, tests for English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies served as dependent variables. Independent variables consisted of per student expenditures for technology, instructional resources including media services and curriculum and professional development. A hierarchal regression model tested the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variables, while controlling for the percentage of White Non-Hispanic students. Results showed that for each subject area and year of the study, the hierarchical regression model showed no relationship between per student expenditure and at risk student achievement on the state mandated eleventh grade test. This led to the conclusion that when the percent of White Non-Hispanic students is controlled, there is no relationship between at risk student achievement and per student expenditure in the area of technology access, implementation, and instructional integration.

Book Education Inputs in Uganda

Download or read book Education Inputs in Uganda written by Harriet Nannyonjo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based on a study prompted by the need for improved effectiveness in the use of education resources in Uganda. Uganda's problem with increasing resource constraints for education is common in many developing countries and the lessons learned in this study may be of broad interest. Currently, Uganda allocates over 31 percent of its discretionary recurrent expenditure to education and 67 percent of this is allocated to primary education. Given increasing pressures on the budgets, there is need to implement strategies focusing on those inputs most likely to improve student learning. A major impediment to rational decision making in this area is lack of knowledge about what interventions work best and under what circumstances. Without this knowledge, Government may continue spending scarce resources on inputs that may not directly contribute to student learning achievement.

Book excerpt: Which type of education should we pay for? How much education should we pay for? Can we buy knowledge about how to improve education? Uniquely presenting a general overview of economic principles applicable to all sectors of education, Paying for Education makes key economic ideas accessible to non-economists, whilst drawing on insights from other social science disciplines. It examines the implications of its analysis, especially for two important areas of policy – paying for teachers and paying for teaching in higher education – in order to highlight some underlying issues and consider alternative policy options, as well as reflect on possible futures. The chapters examine: The value of education for the individual The value of education for society Private and public demands for education Choosing a system to supply education The cost, efficiency and equity of providing education Analysing evidence and case studies on a global scale, Paying for Education is an essential read for academics, educational administrators, policy makers, leaders in educational organisations and all of those interested in the future of how we pay for education.

Book Second Rate Nation

Download or read book Second Rate Nation written by Sam D. Sieber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scathing indictment of America's failure to keep up with other advanced nations and to achieve its own most cherished goals. The chapters of the book focus on: the media, the economy and corporations, foreign assistance and military affairs, health and health care, education, crime and punishment, the environment, inequality, and more. This is the one book to read this year about current events and the United States' many recent failures, which have demoted them to the status of a second-rate nation. The book will be useful for policymakers, journalists, teachers, students, activists and public speakers, and anyone with an interest in the U.S. today. Drawing on copious international and domestic evidence, the author shows that America lags significantly behind other advanced countries in such domains as health care, education, crime, civil liberties, racial and ethnic equality, environmental protection, foreign relations, and key features of the economy, including persistent poverty. The gap extends even to some surprising areas: press freedom and democratic representation. Sieber examines the questions of how and why the peculiar gulf between America's extraordinary self-esteem and the true state of affairs has evolved. He is concerned with understanding how the nation's idealized self-image is sustained in spite of overwhelming evidence of impairment in almost every important domain. In an election year the book is a valuable resource for assessing the challenges the U.S. faces. Apart from the author's powerful thesis, the book is a rich compendium of up-to-date statistical data on a variety of issues, presented without either technical obfuscation or oversimplification. It should therefore be useful to policymakers, journalists, commentators, teachers, students, activists, public speakers, and anyone wishing to know more about the true state of affairs in the U.S. today.
