Book Relationship Between Ethnic Identity and Self esteem in Second generation Asian Indians

Download or read book Relationship Between Ethnic Identity and Self esteem in Second generation Asian Indians written by Prathima Setty and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even with the significant diversity between groups identified as Asian American, literature continues to place these numerous populations into one group. Combining such diverse groups into one category hides large differences and tends to defeat the purpose of much of the research (Durvasula & Mylvaganam, 1994). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between ethnic identity, acculturation, and self-esteem in second-generation Asian Indian adults based on the assertion that ethnic identity is crucial to self-esteem and psychological functioning of ethnic group members (Phinney, 1990). Using the Suinn-Lew Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (Suinn, Rikard-Figueroa, Lew, & Vigil, 1987), the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), correlational analyses were conducted. The results of this study indicate no significant relationship between the participants' ethnic identity and self esteem, ethnic identity and age, or self esteem and age. The data showed that the majority of participants endorsed an integrated level of acculturation. The results provide a preliminary understanding of the way in which this population views and processes its ability to develop a bicultural way of living in the United States.

Book Counseling Asian Indian Immigrant Families

Download or read book Counseling Asian Indian Immigrant Families written by Varughese Jacob and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insight into the unique challenges facing Indian and South Asian immigrants in the West—particularly in the United States. It explores the “baggage” they carry; their expectations versus the realities of negotiating a new cultural, social, religious, and economic milieu; nostalgia and idealization of the past; and the hybridity of existence. Within this context, the author discusses factors which often contribute to intergenerational family conflict among this population. Jacob asserts that this conflict is largely a product of differences in cultural values and identity, acculturation stress, and the experience of marginality. After analyzing and interpreting empirical data collected from two hundred families, he proposes the “Praxis-Reflection-Action” (PRA) Model: a five-stage therapeutic model and the first pastoral psychotherapeutic model developed for the Asian Indians living in the West.

Book Ethnic Identity and Self esteem in Native Adolescents

Download or read book Ethnic Identity and Self esteem in Native Adolescents written by Andrew Peter Gotowiec and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study's purpose was to examine connections between ethnic identity and self-esteem in Native adolescents. A three-factor model of ethnic identity included (a) Native identification, a subjective sense of commitment to Native culture, (b) Anglo, identification, an analogous sense of belonging to the dominant culture, and (c) group-esteem, evaluative appraisals of one's heritage ethnic group. Self-esteem was operationalized with measures of global self-esteem, academic self-concept, and social self-concept. Participants were 164 Native and 150 Anglo grades 10 and 11 students attending a high school in the US Southwest. Confirmatory Factor Analyses and mixed ANOVAs assessed the cross-cultural applicability of study measures. Hierarchical regression was used to evaluate four specific hypotheses. Overall, Native youth had lower self-esteem than Anglo adolescents, but the difference depended on the facet of self-esteem. It was largest for academic self-concept. For global self-esteem the difference was close to statistical significance. No difference was apparent for social self-concept. Hypothesis 1, that Native youths' level of Native identification would be positively associated with self-esteem was not supported. The second hypothesis, that Native youths' level of Anglo identification would be positively associated with their self-esteem, was supported by positive associations between Anglo, identification and both academic and social self-concept. A third hypothesis that predicted a positive association between Native adolescents' group-esteem and self-esteem was supported by positive associations between group-esteem and each measure of self-esteem. The fourth hypothesis implied that association between group-esteem and self-esteem would grow stronger as Native identification increased, but results revealed that as Native identification increased, the association between group-esteem and self-esteem became weaker. The results are discussed considering three theoretical frameworks that inspired the hypotheses (i.e., identity theory; symbolic interactionism; and, a Jamesian account of self-esteem). None of the frameworks accounted for the overall pattern of associations between the three-factors of the model and self-esteem. An alternative interpretation is presented, emphasizing the importance of minority group status as an influence on Native young peoples' self-esteem. The limitations of the study are explored, along with their implications for future theorizing and research in this area. Implications for prevention programs aimed at Native youth are discussed.

Book Ethnic Identity Acculturation Attitudes and Self esteem in Rural High School Students

Download or read book Ethnic Identity Acculturation Attitudes and Self esteem in Rural High School Students written by Concetta M. Posella and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current study used questionnaires in order to survey a sample of rural high school students regarding their self-esteem, attitudes toward acculturation, and their sense of ethnic identity. Students' ratings of self-esteem were not related to their sense of ethnic or racial identity nor their generational status, or how far removed they are from their cultural background. However, when acculturation attitudes were examined, the results were somewhat unexpected. The students who endorsed integration, or the idea that immigrants should both maintain their cultural traditions and try to adapt to their new culture, reported higher levels of self-esteem and identified themselves as completely American. The current findings were discussed in comparison to the results of previous studies conducted in inner-city communities such as New York City. Also discussed were the implications the current study has for educating and counseling adolescents in an increasingly diverse American school system."--Abstract.

Book Ethnic Minority Identity

Download or read book Ethnic Minority Identity written by Nimmi Hutnik and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is racial integration a realistic goal? What reasonable expectations should the larger society have of ethnic minority groups? What hopes can ethnic minority groups nurture in their relations with society at large? In addressing these compelling and important social questions, Hutnik examines key psychological and sociological theoretical perspectives of ethnic minority identity and reviews the empirical work done on ethnicity. In addition to this extensive and critical appraisal of the research, the author considers what constitutes an ethnic group and investigates the sociology of ethnicity from assimilationism to cultural pluralism. In conclusion, she examines the implications of these findings in relation to the integration of ethnic minority groups in Britain. Social psychologists and social scientists working in the field of ethnic group relations will find this a valuable source book.

Book Correlates of Ethnic Identity Family Support and Academic Self Concept in Adolescents

Download or read book Correlates of Ethnic Identity Family Support and Academic Self Concept in Adolescents written by Don Wittrock and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the relationships between ethnic identity, family support, and academic self-concept of adolescents in museum youth programs in the Midwest (N = 88). Three hypotheses were tested and all were supported. There is a correlation between family support and the commitment and exploration of an ethnic identity, commitment to an ethnic identity was associated with a higher academic self-concept, and there is a negative relationship between academic self-concept and self reported grade point average. When the family relationship was studied further, the correlation remained when maternal support was isolated with ethnic identity. A discussion of these findings is presented including limitations and implications for additional research and programming are addressed.
