Book excerpt: This case study examined the relationship between elementary (K-6) teachers, who were highly evaluated by their administrators, and their perceived emotional intelligence. Ten teachers employed by a northeastern school district were randomly chosen from 20 teachers who were selected by their respective three principals for this study. The teachers completed an initital survey, the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory, and interview questions. In addition, the teachers and their respective principals each chose and ranked the five most important emotional intelligence components they believed were necessary in an elementary teacher. The results indicated the (star) teachers believed the 15 emotional quotient qualities were necessary for a teacher to possess. The total emotional quotient score of the group of teachers was significantly better than average, indicating enhanced skills and well developed emotional capacity. Self-Actualization and Happiness were the two highest group scores. The principals chose most emotional quotient qualities from the IntERpersonal components (Social Responsibility, Empathy, and IntERpersonal Relationships). All principals chose Social Responsibility and Stress Tolerance as one of the five qualities they valued in a teacher. Happiness was chosen by all teachers and not by any principal. The inventory's results, the feedback/interview, and the principals' lists as well as the teachers' lists of most valued emotional intelligence components provided a framework of insights into the distinguishing components of emotional intelligence that contribute to the success of the professional teacher.

After completing my bachelors degree; I worked for six years as a secondary school principal in Nigeria before I received the call to come over to Europe for the continuation of my ministerial experience and learning. In all these years, both from studies and in practical experience, I have realized that education is meant to enhance the lives of people and improve them. In the course of researching for my Masters degree, I became aware of the concept of emotional intelligence. I saw in it an apt and timely addendum to the entire course of research and to educational research in particular. The fact is that human life, its reality and goals is the very context inside which learning should be done and for which learning is done. This is what makes education have meaning and determines its usefulness, and it is only in this context that we can say that education prepares one for life and its challenges. Directly or indirectly, emotional intelligence makes a contribution to preparation for living in the modern world. Educational enterprise is not exclusive to the activities that take place within the four walls of a formal classroom. I accept the educational learning theory which says that learning is everywhere for a conscious mind, though it always needs to be tuned and guided. In fact there are a huge number of para-teachers, such as parents, coaches, mentors, pastors, inspirers, trainers and leaders, who do not know the extent to which their day-to-day teachings and drilling of others affect the psychology of society at large. This is because the teaching, mentoring and coaching of such para-teachers influences the emotional intelligence of their followers and learners, most often in a positive way. Emotional intelligence was a ground-breaking theory developed by Daniel Goleman, not only on to teach how best to teach and inspire, but also to make an important link between the learning achievement of the classroom and success in real life situations. This is called knowledge transfer in education.

Book excerpt: Emotional intelligence is a comparatively new psychological concept that, in recent years, has been investigated in the field of education. While there is an abundance of research indicating that increased student emotional intelligence is positively correlated with various student outcomes, very few studies have investigated the relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and student outcomes. Given that students in urban communities often face numerous challenges that work to hinder their academic achievement, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and the academic progress of urban, elementary school students, as well as to investigate if parent income level and student grade level moderated that relationship. In an urban, public school district in Massachusetts, 16 teachers completed the Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test and student academic progress scores were calculated for 336 included students utilizing oral reading fluency percentile scores on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBLES) assessment. Findings indicate that although there was a weak, yet positive correlation between teacher EI and student academic progress, the relationship was not statistically significant. It was also found that parent income level did not moderate the relationship between teacher EI and student academic progress. However, student grade level was found to significantly moderate the relationship between teacher EI and student academic progress, with the direction of the relationship going from positive to negative as grade level increased.

Book excerpt: Classroom climate has an impact on students, and the teacher is the biggest contributing factor in how that climate is created. Teachers are expected to design a classroom climate that is positive and conducive to learning, fostered through meaningful interactions between and among the teacher and students. While positive classroom climate is essential for students, it is complex and difficult to achieve because of a multitude of variables that can go unseen. This research examined the relationship between classroom climate and emotional intelligence of 11 fourth-grade teachers in Garden School District. The mixed methods study includes quantitative data from both the district-wide school climate survey and the teacher emotional intelligence inventory. Additionally, interviews with both the teachers and the principals served to contextualize those findings. The findings of this study demonstrate that there is a relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and classroom climate in the subject classrooms. The competencies found in Goleman's Theory of Emotional Intelligence are strongly woven into the classroom climate. Based on the data collected, recommendations are made for the district to continue its work on improving classroom climate by promoting emotional intelligence understanding and development for teachers and students which includes providing opportunities for students to have voice and choice in their learning.
