Book The Relationship Between Eating Disorders and Ego Development

Download or read book The Relationship Between Eating Disorders and Ego Development written by Mary Denise Sparks and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of onset for eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia nervosa) among females is typically late adolescence. In the present study, it was hypothesized that the onset of eating disorders is related to the late-adolescent developmental task of identity development. Thirty-three late adolescent and young adult females who met DSM-III-R criteria for an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not otherwise specified) and 33 control females completed the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity status -- 2 (EOMEIS-2). Results of chi square analyses revealed no significant differences between eating disorder and control females with regard to status of identity development. However, when identity status subscale scores were treated as continuous variables, several significant between-group mean differences emerged. In line with expectations, eating disorder subjects scored higher on ideological diffusion and moratorium, and they scored lower on ideological achievement. Eating disorder subjects also scored higher on interpersonal diffusion and lower on interpersonal achievement. In addition, there were significant correlations between ideological diffusion and measures of depression and anxiety. Unexpectedly, there were also significant correlations between ideological moratorium and measures of depression, anxiety, social alienation, family discord, and borderline personality symptomatology. The possible implications of these results for understanding frequently occurring, co-morbid symptoms in eating disorder subjects are discussed.

Book Eating Disorder Symptomatology in Pre adolescent Girls

Download or read book Eating Disorder Symptomatology in Pre adolescent Girls written by Dayton Richards Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder are defined by an enduring pattern of eating-related behavior that results in impairments in physical and psychosocial wellbeing. Research is finally expanding to examine the prevalence, risk, development and course of these diagnoses in minority populations. Trauma has repeatedly been linked to the presence of eating disorder diagnoses (Goldfarb, 1987; Rorty & Yager, 1996). However, there is a paucity of research linking early childhood maltreatment to eating disorder pathology. The purpose of this dissertation was to 1) examine the relationship between childhood maltreatment and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors among a high-risk sample of pre-adolescent girls; and 2) examine the impact of several hypothesized mediators including borderline personality features, anxiety, and depression on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. The sample included N=73 pre-adolescent females (ages 9-13) recruited from a high-risk community. Structural equation modeling was used to examine comprehensive theoretically and empirically driven models. Results support the mediating role of borderline personality features as well as trait-level anxiety in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. Childhood maltreatment was associated with higher levels of borderline personality features and trait-level anxiety. These features were in turn associated with higher levels of eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. Implications regarding diagnosis, treatment and intervention are discussed."--Page v.

Book Exploring the Relationship Between Ego Development and Mental Health

Download or read book Exploring the Relationship Between Ego Development and Mental Health written by Heather R. Bonnett and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between ego identity in adults (ego development), symptoms of psychological distress, and self-esteem. Ego identity was operationalized using Loevinger's (1976) stage theory of ego development, further modified by Cook-Greuter (1994; 2010). The test used to measure ego development was the Sentence Completion Test Integral (SCTi). Symptoms of mental disorders or psychological distress were measured using Derogatis' (1994) Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90-Revised). Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES). It has been thought there would be noticeable differences in the relationship between ego development and the types of psychological symptoms or between ego development and self-esteem but no studies have been done to explore this (Cook-Greuter, personal communication, 2016). In summary, my hypotheses were that graduate students would have later ego development than the norms for the general population, that participants at conventional stages of ego development would report different psychological symptoms than participants at later stages of ego development, that participants in this sample who score at post-conventional levels of ego development would report more depression while those at conventional levels of ego development would endorse more anxiety, and that participants at post-conventional stage of ego development would report higher self-esteem than those at conventional levels of ego development. In this study, ego development functioned as a non-metric (ordinal) variable studied in comparison to two ratio variables (psychological symptoms endorsed and self-esteem). The SCTi tests were scored by professional raters certified by Cook-Greuter and Associates. The SCL-90-R and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were scored by the researcher and the dissertation director. Analysis of variance of all study variables was run by ego development level. Also, a process called data imputation was conducted to see if the trend-level results of the analysis would have been stronger with a larger sample. Though it was not one of my hypotheses, subjects at so-called 0́−transitional0́+ ego stages reported a broader array of psychological symptoms than subjects at so-called "stable" stages of ego development.
